This morning I awoke and started wet sanding Keel # 3, in that process, I dropped the boat and broke off the bow of the cutwater, I decided to just round it off .once I fixed it so that it would look halfway decent, I spayed 2 coats of gloss white.  next I will wet sand again and sprat 2 more coats. ( I wanted to capture the tumblehome and the transom in 2 of the photos )Here are the results

Thank you Russ and Michael, on Keel # 3, I spent alot of time fairing the hull to obtain the tumblehome, wich gave me this transom shape. I am pleased with the way this boat is turning out.  I would like to end up with a high gloss finish that gives it a fiberglass look. ( I should get that look after 2 more coats )

Today I finally got the final coats of paint on Keel # 3 for a total of 9 including 2 coats of primer, I got that fiberglass gloss that I was hoping for,  I then shaped the rudder and sprayed 2 coats of primer. I then turned my attention to Keel # 4  I first installed the winow glass . ( I use the plastic from X-Acto blade refill packages ) I then made the cabin top, the hatch rails ( I found a unique knot in the wood that I used for the inside face of the inside hatch rail ) and installed them I then took some Birch ply for the cabin face then installed some Mahogany for the drop board rails . Here are the results

Hi David, For Keel # 4 I have not decided yet, on Keel # 3 the Cabin / Cockpit Coamings are made from a Birch plywood and I am going to use a Cherry Stain for the brightwork then a varnish , And I am going to use a sand color for the deck, I may make the fish well deck and cockpit floor a teak deck by using strips of Birch with Black paint as Caulking.

Pete

If my memory serves me this craft was painted the way the fisherman wanted it to identify it. There was no standard shade.

They are looking great. I like how the stern meets the deck on the left hand boat. That is very classy looking. Beautiful work.

Today I decided to work on the Cockpit Floor for Keel # 4 , I first laid out the Cockpit Floor so that the Bildge could be accessed, Then figured out where the Bench would go . I then cut out strips of 1/64" Birch ply and roughed in the Pieces. Then fine tuned them Painted the edges Black ( I got a little sloppy ) and glued it up . This is the First one I have done like this . I will do the same for the Fish well Deck . I did start to cut out the bench sides and proped them up for the Photo. Here are the results

On Keel # 4 Today, I started by shaping the Mast and fitting it. I decided to add a square piece of Birch Ply as a Mast step. I then stained the Birch on the Cockpit face , Cabin entry and the companion way rails a Cherry . On the Cockpit floor I made a new Hatch cover ( I didnt like the first one ) Laid out the Deck for the cut outs ( I will do the Fish well deck the same as the Cockpit floor ) Then Painted the Cabin top a gloss white. I thought today would be a good day to work on Keel # 4 , I started by refitting the Centerboard.  Then I cut out the Bowsprit Blank, marked it now its ready for shaping. I then made the inside drop board rails , and installed them. I then cut out the seat, wich I made out of 2 pieces so that the seat fits under the Deck. Next I ripped down more of the 1/32" birch ply for the decking . I then laid it out the seats in the same fashion as the cockpit floor and fish well deck. I then installed the seats and added a pre bent pre stained strip cut it to fit aft of the seat and match the cockpit coaming . Here are the results

It is coming along well. Details are important on a large scale model of a small boat. Yours are looking good.

One question. Are you doing the planking details on the seats off the model and then installing the seats as completed units? I ask because the caulking details are bold. If they are good for you, then no problem. If scale is an issue there, you might want to see if you can tone them down. It is your choice though.

Russ

Posted

Thank you Russ, The seats were made off the model then installed .This is the first model that I have tried this on,so scale was not that important ( it just had to look good ) I made the caulking a bit dramatic to see how it would look overall. Its all a just learning process ,and Its alot of fun.

Pete
