The tuning unit that atatches to the RF cabling needed a mesh cage.

I managed this by stretching an old pair of my wifes (Kirsty) tights over a plastic lid, then spraying with primer.

And yes, I did ask first lol.

Once dried, they held their shape until I glued them around the unit and then trimmed off the excess.

I knew tights were good for something other than just holding legs in.

I made up the deck and pennant masks yesterday, but overall I'm not happy with the paint job.

The primer isn't very good and it's turned out patchy.

I'm going to sand it off and start again. I may use a darker primer.

I was doing a spot of research on another one of my dad's ships, HMS Cook which I remember him telling me ran aground and her captain court martialed. Look what I found.

First disaster of the build. The plywood deck disintegrated after I re painted this morning. It became very brittle and de-laminated. It's now in the bin and 2mm styrene has taken over.

Hi Bob. I've used my Ecraft die cutter for the masks. It's a brilliant tool. I used it to cut the octagon shapes for the bridge and the gun director platform too, directly onto the styrene. It's taken me a while to get to grips with the software ( which is a bit rubbish ). I have now however found a program called Inkscape. I'm now learning how to use this instead. It's a lot more comprehensive.

I'm using it more and more for complicated shapes as I get used to it. Cost me a bit over £100 second hand. It cuts wood, vinyl, plastic, cloth, card etc up to around 1mm thickness.

I'm even considering designing a build with it from scratch it's that good!

This excellent bit of film shows just how manoeuvrable the leanders where. Watch till the end to see just how good the RN seamanship really is.

Something resembling what our American members would call a PIT manoeuvre lol.

My dad took part in these 'war' manoeuvres in about 1974 on board the Arethusa.

Hello

This build is looking awesome so far! I am new to working with ships in this scale so your build is an inspiration and very informative. I have the same fibre glass hull and was wondering how to attach the deck? Does it just lay on top and the edges sanded to shape and what preparation did you do to the top edges of the hull in relation to allow the deck to lay flat. My hull is really uneven and I am not sure how far to sand down, or a safe way of getting the sides to match? Can you or anyone offer advice? Thank you in advance, this is my first attempt and I am building static. HMS Hermione is my subject.

Hi Gareth.

I've constructed a ladder inside the top of the hull. This will let me fix the deck flat and I was toying with the idea of using a router to trim the edges using a moulding bit to get the rounded edges.

I'll have to experiment on the styrene first to make sure it doesn't just melt it.

Gary.

More details going on. Sighting platforms, bridge wing nav light chambers.

A bit of filling here and there on some marks I noticed.

The rear mast is too high also. I'll have to cut it down by around 10mm and re do the top.

The anchor ports on the hull will be next up.

Hi all. Just checking in as I haven't been on here for a while. The project is on hold as I've been mega busy setting up my new business.

I will resume the build very shortly.

Cheers

Hello all and hope everyone had a good Xmas.

I finally had some time back on the build and managed to push it along.

Got some fine detail work done, and corrected some errors since finally getting my hands on the original shipwrights drawings from the maritime museum.

The deck is now in place and I'm filling and sanding it all into shape over the next couple of days.

Hopefully I'll get some paint on it before I return to work on Monday.

A bit more progress today.

I fitted the superstructure with some powerful magnets to hold it to the deck.

Anchor ports cut and filled.

Main gun attached using a dowel so I can turn it and remove it.

Lots of sanding/filling etc to go yet.

Hi Lizzy Borden

I must confess that I have been a bit naughty...as a Roman Catholic, my confession to the Holy Father is that I am guilty of admiring your work from afar,. I have visited often, been amazed, but just never added any comments or afforded you due recognition of your skills and talent. For this, I am very sorry. So, please forgive my indiscretions!

Without a doubt, reading the latest updates to your build log is a task that I eagerly await and enjoy. I really love the sharpness of the detail that you're applying to your Arethusa and the fact that she has such a strong family connection to your Father. I'm sure he would be very proud.

Please keep up the fabulous work!

I eagerly await your next update.

Cheers

Patrick

Thank you Patrick. I'm trying my best and I appreciate the comments.

Hi Bob. I got the wasp printed at Shapeways.com

They already had it on file in 1/96th and 1/72nd.

I've been hunting for one for ages and they basically saved my bacon. Cost was around €40 but well worth it.
