America³ (USA-23) by pete48 - Scale 3/16" = 1' - International America's Cup Class racing yacht

Recommended Posts

This Morning , It was decided that I would shelf my next build ( too many complications) Kate ( my Wife )said it would be a good Idea to put it down for a while. ( She is always right in these matters ) Anyway I was looking at IACC plans , And found that A3 has an intresting hull shape . So I decided to build Her in the same manner as the other 2 Cup Boats ( Australia II & Stras & Stripes )  a Hull only build , in the same scale . I was fortunate enough ( Living in Southern California ) to go to the Races , and see the boat's wich replaced the 12 meter Yacht's. It was a Facinating America's Cup , with the New Zealand Bowsprit scandal , Paul Cayard becomming a Italian Citizen ( He was the tactician for Tom Blackaller for the 87' cup ) Any way here is where I am at with the Build ,The Hull Planking will be done today . It look's Like the Pete48 Syndicate will be building 4 Boats for this Campaign . Here are the results

Hi Pete. Looks great and you're a smart man for listening to your wife. Otherwise you'll be in real strife! I hope the problems you're having with Stars and Stripes are easily solvable.

Out of interest...Can I ask- is it easy to get the plans for these Americas Cup boats?

All the best

You can have your own mini-World Cup after you get them all built.

Thank you Dave, I will be doing 3 at this scale and another at a larger scale that will be R.C.  Here is a hint

Thanks Omega, There is no problem with Stars & Stripes, It was a larger boat that I had been researching for the past 3 months . I had the drawings for Stars & Stripes and Australia II for about 15 years . its easy to get drawings off the net , However if you want accurate numbers/ Drawings  you will have to talk to the design firm that drew the boat

LOL. It's getting hard to keep up. Looks like I had better buy another deck chair s I can sit down and watch another build.

Cheers

Geoff

Thanks Geoff , These 3/16" Cup Boats are pretty small , Without a Mast and rigging  they build pretty quik .This one is almost 14 " in length

Today , I was able to get alot of work in on A3 . I planked the boat and started Fairing the Hull , The Transom ( or lack of a transom ) was the tricky part . Other than that smooth as silk , I am looking at a simple keel design wich should be fairly straight forward, and a final fairing  . Here are the results

Wow, Pete can't keep up with your growing fleet! :P Kidding aside, she has really nice lines and looks like she's going together very smoothly--as always, very nice work! From the the sounds of Kate's advise, I'm guessing she enjoys your builds and sailing as much as you?

Cheers,

Jay

It was a busy day for America3 , I started by cutting down all the frames that would be in the Cockpit area , I then cut out and installed the Cockpit Floor, I then installed the Cockpit side walls , I also added the Deck piece at the front of the Cockpit. I started to get the sanding done to get her ready for Epoxy , in the same manner that I did Stars & Stripes. . She has that IACC Look  with the open Transom. Here are the results

Thank you Michael, Actually this one is the longest at 13 1/2 " while Australia II is just over 12 "  it's interesting how the designers pushed the envelope to get the Maximum boat with the rules Formula

Thank you David B. , She's gong together pretty quik and is catching Stars & Stripes

Thank you Jay, The tricky part was removing the last frame and the Keel section aft of where the Cockpit floor runs into the transom. West System Epoxy is amazing stuff, and for Boat Building I would not use anything else . I talked about it on the Stars & Stripes log posting # 47 I will be happy to explain or show the process

Hi Omega , I use Basswood , However in my research on RC boats ( IACC Class ) they use plywood for the frames and Balsa for the planking with epoxy and cloth over the hull. I will probably use Basswood for the frames and a balsa core with epoxy and cloth for the Hull . The BMW ORACLE Boat will be about 36 " in length , not quite the full length of the IACC 120 Class rules ( they are 1200 mm or 47 1/4 " in length ) 36" is the largest RC Sailboat in my area (at the local RC Sailing spot ) and if I show up with the full size IACC 120 no one will want to Sail against me , and what fun is that

Best Regards,

Pete

OK, Here we go with the first stage , The wetting out , to Start , The G-flex  mixture is a 1 to 1 ratio meanig that the same amount of resin to hardner. next is to mix it thoroughly ,( I make small batches ) it should look like Honey.( at this stage once it is mixed you will have 45 minutes to use it ) ( pot life )  I use a disposable sponge brush for the aplication, it works better than a regular brush ( for models ) I start by dabbing it on  ( you dont want to get it on too thick ) once covered I smooth it out so that it even over the entire hull, in this case ( America3 ) the inside of the Transom as well. ( as it is part of the Hull ) in 3 hours it will be cured enough for the second stage . Here are the results from stage one

Thank you David B.

Thank you Dr. Per , for adding  the link, I forgot about that

Here is Stage 2 , The nice thing about the West System Epoxy is the mixing cups and mixing sticks can be reused, as the epoxy does not stick to them. the mixing of epoxy is the same as stage 1( 1 part resin to 1 part hardner), however after you get it mixed to look like honey, Add the 406 silica and mix ( you can make it as thick or as thin as you need )and the pot life is still 45 minutes.  For this aplication , I don't need it very thick ( a little bit thinner than Peanut butter ) and using the mixing stick ( it's shaped like a small putty knife ) I applied it over the entire hull ( mainly to fill in between the planks ) I got  Kate ( my wife ) to take the photo's , In conclusion it is very easy to use, and here are the results
