I'm Just online this morning and admire your progress - wonderful!

 

I have still a question regarding my own upcoming deck construction. What do you think, can I close the deck joints waterproof (paper method) by using enough glue (tidebond III) and subsequent oiling? I also provided a false deck (thickness 1mm), and surely I will make some tests, but maybe you're already experiences or tips about this topic ...

I would false deck before glued planks protected with epoxy resin.

I think it is excellent glue that you intend to use (tidebond III)

You can also protect the epoxy finishing layer deck but will look glossy

This is the best protection, but I think that the protection of matte varnish or oil also helped.

 

Here is an example of what it looks like epoxy to plank.

 See the detail where the epoxy resin was used, see the difference in color.

Thank you very much for all these valuable tips!

 

I'm already thinking about laminate the hull on the inside with epoxy resin and glass fibre - just to be sure, that I have a seald layer. On the outside, I already started to fill the small joints with waterproofed 2K-wooden-spatula - then a build up in acrylic- or 2K-color. Regarding the deck, I surely will follow your council with the false deck. For the finish, i'm not sure at this moment how will behave the paper in the caulking joint under influence of water - I will try it with oil, etc by trial - I can tell you later more ...

Hi Mike

 

..perhaps it is better epoxy & rowing placed on the outside of the hull.

So I protect Pen Duick with epoxy, sprayed the 2k car putty (??) and painted also paint for cars

 

 

 

It is described at the beginning of this log

 

The paper should not be a problem, the problem is wood (planks) if twisted due to moisture, it happened to me on one project.

Thank you for the reminder with the photo gallery. I've studied one more time exactly the beginning of your log - I come to the conclusion that I'll rethink everything again - construction process, build up of the layer, appearance aimed at, etc. - in a way all depends on together - but no hurry, I'm still hard at planking ...

...  and thank you for the praise, visit my log and interest.

My model is not designed for use in water, there will be a static model.
The hull is made of maple. I know from experience that it is possible to shoot and open cracks (sometimes). On the hull of Pen Duick not visible any compounds
which is why I put rowing and epoxy. So I got very smooth and perfect hull, as is the actual ship.

I don’t know that I can add anything to all of those congratulations but I agree with all of them, just following the photos is inspirational and learning from your process is rewarding.

I have long wanted to build a larger radio controlled sailing version of Pen Duick ,my all time favourite classic yacht, having been inspired by some UTube videos and realise that I would have to redraw to a larger scale any drawings, however I am having difficulty in obtaining any drawings to start with. would you tell me where you got your drawings from? I am happy to pay for them.

Congratulations again for producing a beautiful model of a beautiful Yacht.
