  1. So I thought it would be cool to fully rig the cannons right?so as you can see FAIL. Maybe a single block with the line tied off at the bulkhead? I would appreciate any ideas
  2. looks like im stopping by the hardware store tonight. love your idea
  3. Love your log and I hope I can duplicate some of your efforts. I have a question; after going through your log you mention several things you would have done differently. It seems I have many issues with my bulkheads width and with them lining up flush with the keel. They line up nicely with the refrence line and cooincidently with the rabbit (all but two line up with the rabbit). I'm hoping that you can give me a little direction and learn from your experences. would you A: lower the bulkheads to line up with the keel, or B: leave the bulkhead lined up with the refrence line and shim where needed?
  4. I thought about re-doing the birds nest but the time to do that would slow me down and I am alredy chipping away at my rattlesnake. THeir are so many san fran builders out there I am supprised that someone has not made a praticum. The model could be great with some bashing. I see great ideas from each person, and if these could be compiled, the model that would come out of it woulb be great. Also I sugest getting different rigging line, or treating the line supplied with the kit. The black line I used on the front of the ship is line I bought from nature coast. I used leather dye on it and it removed all of the fuzzies and does not bleed with glue.
  5. It's a toung oil finish with a lacquer already in it. I love the look of figured wood so if at all possible i choose a wood that contrasts rather than staining. Thank you for the compliments I really question my scratch building but I can't stand the metal supplied in this kit. I think the scale is all out of whack. I'm trying to use methods or rigging to apply to my next build (ms rattlesnake) so the rigging on the cannons will reflect the ms instructions which are not period for this ship. Wish I had found this site before I begin the model. Was not until I started planking the hull with that mahogany that I sought help and by that time I had already laied my deck. Wish I would have put in tree nails and caulking.
  6. So the past week or so I installed the bowsprit and the shrouds (think that's what they are called). For the shrouds I simply wrapped the wire around the dead eye and applied some super glue. Seems strong. Onto rigging my cannons.
  7. Get a planking iron, they are worth every penny. I tried my wife's curling iron and the clothes iron and finally after burning myself a ton I found this at a model train store. It has an adjustable temp on it and because of the flat head it really made forming on the hull easy
  8. When I planked my hull the tough curves were made easier by only doing the bullheaded at a time. Later in the build I would use planks that were full length. In hindsight I wish I would have kept the shorter plank patten going it looks allot better with the contrasting colors on the hull
  9. Love the look of your cherry hull, used a little figured cherry on some assorted parts and love the look, ales me wish I could re-do my hull in it. Great job
  10. Just took at look at your log and I am having All the same issues. I completed my rabbit and am dry fitting the bulkheads. So the reference line matches up we'll........ But the bulk heads at the deck don't line up flsh with the top of the keel. Judging by your build you sanded the bulkhead slots so they would Line up with the keel? Kinda hard to tell, did u keep that lined up? Love your build log will defiantly mark it and follow your build oh yea broke my first bulkhead today "G" basswood is soo soft. I can see many oh sh$&@t moments to come so far bulkhead b is the only one the line up all around. C through G are all about 1/16 or so high. The bottom of the bulkhead lines up beautifully with the rabbit. If I lower the bulkheads to flush with the keel I will also throw off the lines and top of the side rails, and sure the list goes on. Shim the keel seems like easiest soulution, easy probably mean a huge mess later on. Any ideas hit me with em
  11. There is a culture taht goes with hockey that unless you are part of it you dont get it. Most people on the outside only see the fighting or the confusing rules, but there is so much more to it than that. Good luck to your penguins this year if crosby can keep healthy maybe youll have a shot
  12. although I am having a good time building ships, I could not live without playing hockey. You still play?
  13. Started attaching my deadeyes. Now I am questioning my method. How much strain will be placed on these when I attached the rat lines to the masts.
  14. Started looking and comparing my keel against the plans and low and behold the keel appear I be 1/8" shorter than the plans. So do I sweat this ? Either way I line it up it appears that each half is shorter than the given plans. So I am hoping that this is a planned mistake by ms. Anyone else see this on theirs?
  15. Thanks for the input I'll take my time and get that rabbit right. Basswood Is super soft and bland, has anyone used a different wood for the deck. I have swiss pear and want to do the deck in this but it's 1/32 thick (laminate). So would you put down the bass wood then the pear? Would this cause a thickness issue in the deck ? the pear is too thin on its own and would probably end up dipping between bulkheads
  16. So far have put together the keel, stem, and stern post. Working on the rabbit to get it to the 1/16 depth. Is it better to short rather than too deep? It would seem that you could sand down the planks if the rabbit was not deep enough, but too deep you would have a dip in the plank?
  17. So this will be my 3rd build and my first model shipways kit. Up front I am impressed with the supplied kit. After inventory the any issue was some broken or bent cannons. I have read extensively about model shipways customer service so we will see how that works out. Oh yea and just to let everyone know up front I am an absolute F.U.N.G. So most of the proper terms for the parts of the ship are beyond me, but I am learning. Makes me wish I had payed a little more attention about navel history during boot camp. So here we go !
  18. Hugh...... Haven't figured out which way is up apparently. So here is where I am at currently. any and all feedback is welcome and any experiences that I have had, I am more than happy to share. This is my second kit, and I have two more kits waiting to go :ms rattlesnake and ms constitution (actually started my rattlesnake and will start that post tonight). So back to my San Fran. I am currently rigging my cannon and will start the shrouds? I think that's what they are called. So any advice or possible stumbling blocks u see coming my way let me know. Also many thanks to all those other San Fran builders on the original site I would not have gotten this far without them.
  19. have come a long way since these pictures, I think this was just prior to christmas. Will take some current pic's tonight without the coffee
  20. Have been lurking watching others build their san frans and thought I'd throw my hat into the ring. Im right at The rigging stage and though it would be smart to get help. plus I'm starting the MS rattlesnake and know thats going to be interesting . Doing this from my phone will upload pics from there hopefully
