Some how my railings matched, I just sanded the bowling pin thingies to match height/angle of the adjoining rails. Hope this helps. Cherry is much prettier so your bash would be an improvement. Watch out for those other kits once the get your attention it's really hard to go back. Once I started with my snake it took me three weeks to even look at my San Fran. P.S. Crosby is lookin good, the rest of the team needs to stop watching him play, and chip in.

So starting the marathon that is rigging. Crows nests glued in place using expoxy. All of the upper parts of the masts are shapped but wont be glued in place until the lower rigging is fitted and served. i hope this approach is right. Started with the ratlines? Also drilled holes in the crows nests to hopefully make the upper ratlines easier to manage (I hope). Masts won't be glued in place until I have the mainstays served and in place and any other rigging that can be done. Also need to try one of the many jigs that have been posted to attach the deadeyes. So far rigging is proving to be an art all it's own.

Robbin, once dry the dye does not bleed, BUT I would not apply it to rigging already on your model. It would bleed onto the wood. Maybe some other opportunity you could try it, works great. I wish I could find some brown or grey.

Kiwi black shoe dye works great and it takes out all of the fuzziness, no bleeding when glued

I picked up a tip on the old MSW that you use watered down 50/50 Elmer's glue and completely coat the grating. I used a stupid amount on mine and when they dried you can't see any trace if the glue. I didn't have any problems cutting mine with a sharp blade. I think the glue helps reinforce the wood?

So all guns finally installed. Don't know why but the was mentally challenging. I can only imagin how long it would take to do the guns on a 1st rate ship. So I have some finishing touches to do on the deck furniture and life boat. I have all my masts shaped and its onto pure rigging, that is if the rattlesnake doesn't distract me again.

Great review! I wish more kits were reviewed for a newb like me. When I look for a kit a huge factor is the accuracy. I almost got this kit but opted for the MS constitution

On the old site a log had pointed out some pins in the midship rail that are not clearly pointed out in the instructions. Take a super close look at the rigging plans and you'll see what I mean. Good luck on not messing with the Syren.

I am not too thrilled with my AL kit. I have since bought two kits by modelshipways (rattlesnake&constitution). The scale and detail in these kits make the San Fran kit look ridiculas. Although I'm not supper disappointed in the Fran, I don't see myself buying another forgen kit unless its British made. Maybe post what you have with your San Fran I and get some help from the Comunity and buy a different kit and start fresh with your new found experience and friends here at MSW.

The ebony is great, I would say its a must have for any future builders. Just got to convince AL to put cherry and ebony into their kits. I hard a hard time pulling the trigger on the gun ports myself. I installed all of my strakes prior to the ports. I think I measured twenty times said a prair and then went for it.

So a quick update have been working on the knight and timber heads. I took another page out of Jpetts books and roided them out a little. I have spent many hours thinking these and came to the conclusion that they should flow into the rabbit and be able to be faired. They are currently lightly fair and once the lines of the upper hull are a little more defined I will finish the job. Have also worked a little on the transom windows. I used a piece of plastic baseball card protector as the window. Tested it with CA and the glue soaked into the wood with no frosting or trace the I used glue. I was expecting some fallout from using CA ? Don't know what kind of plastic it is but it cuts well and is stiff enough to be sanded on edge if need be. I did paint part of the transom with some ocher to give me an idea about the final product. I want to ad trim around the windows and the name plate but I am concerned that this detail could or would be easily damaged. Any feedback ?
