Ray reacted to Beef Wellington in HMS Jason by Beef Wellington - Caldercraft - 1:64 - Artois-class frigate modified from HMS Diana 1794
Second Planking phase 1:
Finished building up the stern post area with limewood strip to approximately where it needs to be. Once I'm confident that the stern area will work, on will go the lower counter which will allow me to put the wales on. I'm hoping to complete the wales first and then use this dictate the flow of the visible planking rather than install over the second planking.
The sternpost was marked off as best estimate of the end state thickness and used to guide planking. I'm trying for a smooth run on the limewood, but then will be building up the second planking in 0.5mm increments to then sand this back as appropriate.
I'm using PVA glue for the second planking, its slower but I just don't like using CA glue. There are also a couple of areas where the first planking is perilously thin so any additional strength will likely be beneficial. Not going to invest any more time than necessity requires here - all of this will be covered by copper plates.
Limewood glued on but not sanded back. This was a little demoralizing as essentially a lot of this was replacing a lot of the material removed from the keel former for the rabbet and bearding. For anyone taking a similar approach keep this in mind right at the beginning of the build.
Limewood sanded to shape and second planking going on...
Additional 0.5mm thick strips added where needed for thickness...
Pre-finished 'step' look that will eventually be sanded smooth as required before the sternpost itself is shaped.

Thanks Timmo and the likes.
Referring to previous message here's some pics related to my lifeboat dilemma.
Last two pics show the second lifeboat (24 ft.) I intend to start with a strip made of card/paper following the suitable curve and shape. The aim is to copy - paste the same strip in several sheets of styrene with a 0.25 mm thickness.

Hi Jason nice rework one thing not mentioned so far is the rudder thickness will increase when the copper tiles are added as possibility the dimensions in the book would be with the copper plates on.

Moving on to adding some spirketting. I just love the look of the NMM Minerva model, something that is increasingly influencing where I think I want to go with this model. One of the features is the contrasting red spirketting against yellow quickwork which I'm looking to replicate here.
The primary challenge is that the all the gunport sills should be exactly the same height from the deck - although most are very close, there is a variance of no more than 0.5mm across the range, its enough to present some problems as the contrasting colours emphasize errors. 'Top and butt' Planks were mass produced slightly larger than needed by gluing a number of planks together and sanding to shape and then separating with IPA. These were then individually tweeked to ensure the top of the top plank meets the lower sill and the sweep ports.
Although sadly not much of this will be seen, its a good opportunity to build some confidence and safely practice a skill while still making progress. Lots of touchup still needed.

Thanks for the comments guysMort
I hope one of these photos show the stem planking you would like to see.
The inner wall of the gun deck has now been fitted, I painted the first three planks just to help keep a nice line to where it joins the waterway, later I will sand down and repaint the whole inner wall.
I have also started to dry fit the top ply deck this needed some of the slots adjusting and at the moment it is just clamped and taped down, as the next job is to fit the transom parts and I think having the deck in place will help to align the parts. You can also now see how little of the gun deck can actually been seen.

I have started the second side of the gun deck planking and have now laid the waterway and the top & butt planks, bit of a job to concentrate due to the pain relief so I only did a small bit at a time, I have also cut sanded blackened the edges of quite a few lengths of 3mm planking.

HMS DIANA 1794 By Ray– A 38 Gun Heavy Frigate (Caldercraft)
I intend to depict her as built in 1794 with open rails on the quarter deck and replace the quarter deck carronades with 9 pounders, I also intend to plank the decks as in Anatomy of the ship “The Frigate Diana” by David White so will replace the supplied wood with Maple.
I have had the kit for several months, but only had a quick look inside the box to see if all seemed present and correct, I did not want to start thinking about her too much until Pegasus was completed. Now Pegasus has been completed I delved into the box in earnest, and it is quite a large and heavy one, all the contents seem to be good quality although I would have preferred walnut dowel to the Birch wood dowel supplied this just does not look as good stained as the walnut does varnished, so I will replace any dowel that is not to be painted with walnut.
The one thing I would like to replace are the copper tiles, I think they are nowhere as good as the Amati ones, to me the ones supplied are to bright, and the rivet detail is in comparison, nowhere near as good but at a cost of around £100 this may not be possible.
I have been in for a bit of stick from family members, as my first wife’s name was, you have guessed It, Diana, so I will have to get used to “ off to your room with Diana again” and “we never thought you and Diana would spend so much time together” a cross I will have to bear.

The Display Stand
Before building the Pinnace I decided to build the display stand, I very much liked the one Mobbsie built for his Aggy so I take no credit for the ideas or the design, so its my version of Mobbsies stand.

Running rigging
Part 1
The last job before the running rigging was to add the shroud cleats.
The yards, I added the two main yards first and then the cross-jack, I first made and fixed the Truss Pendants to the yards,I then fixed the yard to the mast held in by the pin, then tied the jeers, then after making sure the yard was horizontal and square cynoed the yard into the mast, and after giving it time to set,set up the blocks and tackle to complete the rigging of the Truss Pendants and the the main slings.

The 32ft Pinnace
I built the Pinnace in the same way as the other boats, but did the decking differently, and a bit of white lining on the paint job, on the sides, to make the boat a bit more like the Captains boat,, I have really enjoyed building these boats, so much so that during my next project I am going to build some more at a larger scale, they will also be painted as they were in service, as this added to the boats protection on long voyages and will also be carval built as supplied to ships in service not in the channel.
