Have started the gunport linings, this will be slow.  Fine tuning the ports so they align appropriately is the order of the day.  The technique I'm using is to first install the lower cills, and to ensure that the cills are horizontal athwart-ship am using a strip of wood to ensure it sits flat on both sides.  Lots of double checking to ensure that position is correct.  Once lower cill is fixed, the upper is glued using an appropriately sized spacer to keep upper and lower cills parallel.  Side linings added last.

And finally, happy Spring everyone!  I keep mentioning waiting for warmer weather to get some good sanding done on the hull.....well, this is the scene this morning, looks like I'm still waiting....

Another Diana problem sorted I was lucky as I mentioned, in my log,  that I saw the problem as well, and as in my log remarked the port positions before I cut them and hope they are in about the right place, you have described problem and the solution better than I did, as in the end I went slightly towards what looks right. Just wait until you get to the rigging plans !!! I am spending a lot of time looking at Pegasus and the Pegasus rigging plans.

Thanks for the many likes and positive comments, the photos are getting harder now the rigging is taking place, taking photos of the rigging is more problematical, close-ups are ok but when showing a rigging run, it is hard to get all the run in, and in the longer shots the runs are hard to see, and not just looking like mass of ropes, but as the photos seem popular I will try to keep them coming.
    Part 3
Lastly the topgallant yards have been fitted to the mast in the same way as the topsail yards. The Parallels definitely go on better when tacked to the mast.

I have finished the first of the poop railings. It proved quite time-consuming and again, a rather fiddly job.  I had been putting it off as making a mess of it would have been very obvious and spoiled the whole model. It looks as if it will come out acceptably - I am now waiting for the PVA glue I have used on the top of the railing to properly set.

I decided to do all of it in stages.  First, the rear support was glued (parts 116 and 201 (see above)) as an anchor and a guide for the rest of the supports. Then support 115 and 110 were added. Care was need to make sure the supports were vertical - hence the piece of balsa supporting the railing.  PVA glue was used as small adjustments need to be made.  Once these were accurately glued, the remaining supports to the right of part 115 were then glued using Gel CA. Incidentally, when viewed from the side, the supports may appear to be 'wonky' . In fact this is exactly how they look in the plans.  They provide three gun ports for the carronades.

Once I got to this stage I had a minor disaster.  I dropped the remaining supports (127 - 130), so that when I retrieved them, I couldn't easily tell which was which. It took an hour or so and the use of a slightly expanded vocabulary to sort it out.  For the next railing I will be more careful in labeling them. I used the bulldog clips to hold the supports so that I could paint their edges easily - note the numbering, something I didn't do the first time.

Finally, here are all the supports in place. Make sure to check the heights of the supports as small adjusts may be needed.

The top railing being glued.  The clips are very useful, though I am a bit worried they may mark the railing. I should have put a strip of thin balsa on top of the rail to act as a cushion. Next time...

The topsail yards were next to be added to the masts these are connected to the mast with the Parral, I assembled them adding the ribs and trucks until the Paarral went around the mast ,I remember they were a real pain to fit and rig on Pegasus when I left them lose on the strings so this time I added a spot of glue at each end, I then tac glued them to the mast, after trying a fair few times to rig the without doing this, then with them held in place like this, the yard was glue in place, setting it horizontal to the yard below and checking it was also square viewed from above. The Parral`s rigging was then fixed around the yard. The tyes and halliard rigging was added with the trucks tied to the after most topsail mast standing back stay.
The first photo shows why I have not yet added the gaffs and will leave off for as long as possible, limited room.

Firstly I still have a long way to go most likely many weeks or months on the rigging which will include all the rope coils, which took a time to do on Pegasus, there are also the ships boats to build, which I may build and use as a break from the rigging at some point.
Secondly my next build will be something completely different,it will be a WW2 Hunt Class Destroyer a Deans Marine kit built as a static model. My reason for building the Destroyer are two fold one she was the favourite ship my father served on, he served on her a the time of the D Day landings at Omaha Beach, she was one of the destroyers that closed the beach to 800 yards to silence the shore guns that were decimating the US troops landing that day. Secondly it will be nice to build something different.

    Running rigging
    Part 1
The last job before the running rigging was to add the shroud cleats.
The yards, I added the two main yards  first and then the cross-jack, I first made and fixed the Truss Pendants to the yards,I then fixed the yard to the mast held in by the pin, then tied the jeers, then after making sure the yard was horizontal and square cynoed the yard into the mast, and after giving it time to set,set up the blocks and tackle to complete the rigging of the Truss Pendants and the the main slings.

The rest of the yards and the sprit-sail yard have now been made up and rigged, they were a bit of a doddle after the lower ones, I have also made the two gaffs but I will leave them off for as long as possible to allow turning her  from side to side to gain access, when adding the yards and rigging,as she is getting longer. Again the yards are only in the pin holes.

The ports should all be the same width and height, Jason.   The planking is cut back from the port slightly to allow for the lip.   The upper and lower edge of the ports generally follow the gundeck sheer while the sides are vertical (perpendicular) to the keel.

Do you have a copy of the AOTS Diana?   Excellent resource for this class of frigates.

Cheers Guys for the comments and likes, its nice to share a journey with friends.

Sjors/Mobbsie - its not an exact replica of me, I had to scale down the pecs to fit

Well, a major milestone arrived slowly. Finally the first planking is complete.  This time the bow presented me a few problems to solve, all self inflicted because I've deviated from the kit.  Because I had decided to customize the bow so I could fit the bowsprit through rather than sitting in a notch on the stem, it essentially took away any anchor points for the fo'c'sle bulwark.  The solution I used was to shape some balsa blocks to the appropriate shape and temporarily mount on top of the bow filler blocks, this allowed the planks to be given the appropriate curvature (after soaking) and then securely glued edge on the plank above and below (Hoepfully this will also provide some protection during upcoming phases).  To ensure that the top of the bulwark has the right shape for the plansheer, I needed to shape the uppermost strips lower edge to key onto the plank below.  Because this strip would be the most susceptible to damage, I used one pre-shaped strip curved completely around the bow.  The bow on this ship looks deceptively simple but has some tricky curves, but even in this rough state the lines seem to be showing through very pleasingly.  Note that the two shaper blocks are very slightly different height which gives the illusion that the top strip is not level, but it is....I must have checked it a million times.

A scaled copy from the AOTS Diana book to get the correct shape of the bow and many diagrams cross referenced

Finally a technique I found very helpful, but unfortunately not until I was nearly done.  To keep planks edge on during planking I built these little 'U' shaped pegs out of some extra lime strip (the length of the slot is slightly deeper than the width of a strip) which can be used in many places to help keep strips edge on in some the tricky curving areas at the bow.  The uppermost strip is only approximately shaped at this point, I want to wait until the deck is on the determine final dimensions.  In the waist, I once again deviated from the instructions and carried the planking 2mm above the top of the  bulkheads rather than stopping at the top as indicated in the instructions to allow for the thickness of the 1mm false deck and 1mm deck planking.  Any excess should be easy to remove if necessary.

There are times I amaze myself, if you look at this photo of one of the vents, and the fact that both parts are made of brass
and given the choice of joining them by either

    a - tape
    b - glue
    c - solder

I managed in an addled state to pick b, yes b. Not only that I have stuck with choice b for an inconceivable length of time.

Finally in the words of a famous man " I had a dream" that it would be great if you could join two bits of metal together using another type of metal that would melt at a low temperature. I decide to call this metal solder......wait a minute that's been around for ages. So can anyone please explain to me why the xxx I picked glue!!!

    Hi Ray,

I'm new to MSW and this build log.

I just finished taking a couple hours reviewing your log.  What an incredible two year journey you've been on constructing the Diana....really an outstanding build to be sure.

I can't thank you enough for taking the time to document at such a great level of detail....with both your informative narratives and simply top notch photography to go along with it
