thanks nigel and a good point, i have plenty of motors its just the main bit to hold the drill, unless i can find some parts laying around from rc cars and helicopters probably easier to just buy one.

Thanks Tony i've had a look already but i'd love to just be able to make my own otherwise i'd probably get one if i cant make me own, but im not the best at electronics though i do enjoy it.

I've seen a few of these from a russian model forum and they look quite useful for drilling smaller holes efficiently, sure you could probably use a router but they're a bit big when using 0.5 drills, does anyone have any information on them or how to make one? (images can be found on google 'Diy motor drill' theres a few images to give you an idea of what im talking about https://www.google.co.uk/search?safe=off&q=diy%20motor%20drill&psj=1&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.50165853,d.d2k,pv.xjs.s.en_US.seW1cfrvSKg.O&biw=1152&bih=628&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=wBH9UYTENK7J0AWU7oHYAQ) (from jack aubreys gallery, hope he doesn't mind)

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
