SawdustDave got a reaction from Erebus and Terror in Young America 1853 by EdT - FINISHED - extreme clipper
This is the build I come to for re-newed inspiration! If modeling is an art (I consider it a very high form of art), then you, sir Ed, are a true master. I'm thinking Rembrandt here.

Well, it is for a good cause so the time away is well spent... besides, gives me a slight chance to catch up on mine - make up for my lost time being sick!!

SawdustDave reacted to Remcohe in HMS Kingfisher 1770 by Remcohe - 1/48 - English 14-Gun Sloop - POF
Thanks Joe, Vivian & Mark. Indeed I used the knurling attachment from Shereline, it gives a good grip and a adds a nice touch.
Port side treenailed
And draught marks added, they won't be painted red as they should as this might be to distracting. They are just 3 mm, 1/8" high

Good to see you back in action. As for little shop mates....mine is confined to a cage. Cockatiel's love to chew on wood and I am convinced one could slowly completely dismantle an entire model.

Looks like my progress on the Mayflower is going to suffer for a while as I am having to focus every moment in the shop on the development of instruction sheets for the Life Boats For Warriors kit.
How much fun is one old man entitled to have?

This build remains at the top of my list of the finest, most comprehensive models I have ever had the pleasure of watching come together. You are a very special artist sir. Thank you again for this amazing log.
PS: Anyone who has not visited your Vic log is really missing something very special.

SawdustDave got a reaction from JesseLee in Scottish Maid by JesseLee - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - 1:50
Most of us have been there and done that JesseLee. The good thing is the fact that no man has ever actually " had a cow". That really would be quite painful indeed.
Looks like a great recovery....solid fix. Now you've got a neat story to tell.

Poker night last night.... managed to hang in to the 9:00 chip count. Means I made the pot cut (always good).
Sixth year of this weekly group of ten very skilled liars.... no knives or guns allowed.

Several milestones in every build are worthy of small celebrations. The final hull plank is one of those "Miller Time" moments.

The mast dowels are oak, and the caps and rails are maple....everything else (cleats, planks, and crosstrees) are bamboo. The mast coats are white vinyl painted black.

Yes Keith, it's the same stuff I'm using on the rigging.
Folding corners can make things too thick from too many layers overlapping each other. I had to figure out by trial & error how to cut out small areas of cloth that were underneath another fold & would never be seen anyway so that when folded up the corner wouldn't be too thick with too many layers of cloth. Its kind of like a folding jig saw puzzle.

I have been using a product named Fray Check. Found it in the sewing section at Walmart. I have used it on rigging anywhere I've served, seized or tied a knot. With the sail cloth it works just like its name. The edges of the material frays very bad. Trying to sew close to an edge like that wont work well, it frays too much & pulls through. I wet the edges with the Fray Check. When it dries it is transparent. The treated area is slightly stiff but still flexible & you can cut a good edge & when folded under is strong enough to hold stitching.

I didn't like the metal jaws supplied with the kit so like a lot of other parts I cast them aside & make them a little better. I glued several thin pieces of wood together to the right thickness. Shaped them up & glued & pined them on the Foremast Gaff, Main mast Gaff & Boom. Added some paint & added the blocks.
I will start the standing rigging soon. Sails have to be made soon too. This will most likely be slow, my illness is making everything more difficult for me & things are taking longer than they were.

SawdustDave reacted to SkerryAmp in Mayflower by SkerryAmp - Model Shipways - 5/32" = 1'
Thanks Russ, that was a little trickier than I thought - still need to find a nice easy way to taper masts and what not - did the drill method but still a little on the iffy side.
Thanks Popeye, After having time to look at it the finish has tapered down a little bit so doesn't look so bad now. First couple of days it was a big glossy ship, looked like somebody super turtle waxed it! Luckily it did even out and settle down so I feel much better!
Good point. I really should do something about the clutter shots - the admiral actually has a photo box she used for her jewelry and stuff when she sold things on Etsy, maybe I will try that out =)
