I think the Syren may be a little too small for the space SWMBO has in mind.  I fear the same may be true of Snake and Cruiser.

However, I am currently assembling some photos for a line-up!

Based purely on size, I'm wondering about Bounty, Vanguard, Constitution, or Confederacy?

I know size isn't everything, but try telling my wife that!

I have the Caldercraft Bounty 'on the shelf'. It will be my next build. I am currently working on the Caldercraft 'Supply'. The second planking walnut planks on this kit were poor quality but the rest of the kit was quite Ok. I have looked through my Caldercraft Bounty Kit and the timber in it is much better than that supplied with 'Supply' - maybe because it was quite a lot more $$$$. It comes standard with copper plates and the plans seem quite good. So as Geoff says, take a look!

I've used these very successfully for rigging ... especially for threading dead-eye pairs.

I would also say stick with known sources. I used to deal with a company that makes specialized pumps and they had to deal with counterfeit / copy stuff and what I learned from them and from other sources (I know some folks from China)   there are a lot of places where you tell them what you want and they will make it.   and it will often be hard to tell from the real thing in some cases and be horribly bad in other cases.
there are plenty of folks there looking to "make a buck" as the saying goes.

I have never come across  any of the companies you mention, for what its worth I would say stick to well known manufacturers that you can trust.  All the best, Geoff

Well.. that's about normal.  I've found it takes some sometimes careful re-wording of the search to find what we need in this hobby.

I have seen it used on say a fore & aft mizzen sail where a running rigging line, or downhaul crosses the sail diagonally & as Dave rightly says it prevents the rigging chafing against the sail. Not sure where the origin of the word "Baggywrinkles" comes from other than I like the sound of it!

I have heard of Tobacco Pipe cleaners being used to simulate Baggywrinkles by wrapping  them around the Stays,Shrouds etc where required.

I’m happy to see the topic discussed since one seldom sees baggywrinkle, or any chafe gear of any kind, depicted on a model. Probably this is due to its not being shown on rigging plans.
I have used brown paper glued over bits of line on the model to simulate leather chafe gear but the only baggywrinkle I put on any of my models was on ship in a bottle models of schooners. As a joke I made the baggyrinkle on THOSE models out of a tiny slice of  rope yarn. Thus it was made out of real baggywrinkle.
I hate to be the guy that suggests a technique I have not actually ever tried or seen done, but here goes: On a large scale model one could almost make real baggywrinkle? One could shave off 1/32” rope fibers from the yarn of a tight laid natural fiber line, and drag a thread dipped in glue through the pile of fibers. When dry the thread could be spiraled around a quarter lift or wherever.

Good idea.   Yes, I've been saving those corks for a long time myself.
I always thought I'd like to have enough to build a boat.  I think I can build about a 23 footer at this point.

    Greetings All,

If you wrap sandpaper around a wine bottle cork, it makes a good sander for tight areas typically found at the junction between the keel and garboard strake and at the point where the plank ends tie into the stern post. The new synthetic corks should last longer than real cork. I'm not worried though - if I stopped drinking today I would still have a lifetime supply,

Thanks for all your input on the HMS surprise kit. I'm glad I asked. I will never deal with disreputable companies' that pirate. I feel like a knuckle head for not knowing about these practices. Thanks for the warning and I've noted the list of companies to look out for. Glad I trusted my instincts.

That's a pirated kit by one of the ZHL companies and fronted by a Russian for sales.   See here:  http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/181-banned-kit-manufacturers-on-msw/

If you look carefully at the kit pictures, the wood is burned by the laser cutting.  They claim "Amati" kits but Amati doesn't package their kits in Chinese.

If you buy it, you won't be allowed to do a build log as per the above link, MSW does not support piracy.

Before you go ahead and get that ship model, you might want to read this pinned post http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/181-banned-kit-manufacturers-on-msw/
Also, I'd be very wary of buying Chinese kits in general.
