That's looking really really good with the decals on.  I agree with Rob - glad the white was opaque enough to not have issues with the red bleeding through.  Good to know the Wingnut decals hold up well in that regard.

That's going to be quite the eye-catching model in your display case!

Overall, this was a very nice kit to build.  It's a good introduction to ship-in-a-bottle modeling.  I'm not sure if I will do any others in the future, but if I did, I think I would go fully scratch.  The photo etch pieces on this model were great, but you bend them a few too many times and you are in trouble.  If I had to do it over, I would also have filed more of the bottom off so that the ship would have appeared to be sitting lower in the sea.  Filing off the keel was very helpful in this regard, but I think the model could have been improved if I filed another 2mm or so off the bottom.

Hmm, I do have a nice bottle of tequila that might be fun to add a model to...or at least drink while I'm thinking about it...

There are lots of different colors of maple, including figured maple like curly maple.  If you look at my Pegasus log you can see the maple I used for the deck.  If you look at my Badger build, I believe the deck wood that came with the Caldercraft kit was tanganyika.  The maple was a lot lighter than the tanganyika.  If I recall correctly, the Badger deck (tanganyika) was oiled with tung oil which brought out some richness and a golden sheen to it.  The maple on the Pegasus deck does not have a finish on it, but I would expect it to change in color and tone a bit as well depending on what is used.

Carburetor and radiator intakes. Both of these were far more aggravating to build than their final appearance suggests. 😑

Well, here's a quick update. First, I got the tail wheel on.

Then it was on to the exhaust stubs. These proved to be an unmitigated disaster. The parts were flimsy, difficult to shape properly, and had no internal support structure. Assembly did not go well. 😑 So, instead of mucking around with them anymore I simply ordered a set of 1/32 scale 3D-printed exhausts from Squadron. "What a fascinating modern age we live in!"

I am a great fan of Fowler traction engines, because of their looks and perhaps also because of their German connection: a young German engineer in search for better opportunities than on the continent ended up with Fowler in the 1860s. He made some important inventions/improvements to their ploughing engines, reorganised the Egyptian cotton industry with the help of Fowler engines and eventually became their agent for the German states and Eastern Europe with a seat in Magdeburg.
Some 35 years ago, I built a Fowler Z7-type ploughing engine from a 1:76 Keil-Kraft kit (which at that time were readily available in model shops) with a lot of 'scratch'-building, as I had just acquired a watchmakers' lathe. The actual engine was virtually absent from the kit and various other aspects of the kit had to be corrected:

Before painting showing the amount of detail added to the Keil-Kraft kit.

Finished and painted Fowler class Z7 ploughing engine in 1:76 scale.

I was lucky to live in the UK at the time, so I could visit various steam-fairs to take pictures of originals and there was also a local museum that owned a class BB ploughing engine.

I didn't know that there was an 1:35 scale kit of a class B6 traction engine. I always wanted to build a model of those. The kit looks good, but it is a pity that the whole engine-block has been cast in one piece. I would want to make the metal parts from real metal ... does the kit come also with wheels with rubber tyres? This is the configuration as agricultural engine. Not sure what the army would have used. The agricultural wheels would give more traction 'off-road', but are rather uncomfortable to ride on paved roads.

Incidentally, the German army experimented with traction engines as artillery tractors in the 1870/71 Franco-German War. I believe they were Fowler engines. There are not many accounts of their performance in the published literature - military writers of the time mostly were no techno-freaks and quite conservative. While their pulling capacity was judged favourably, the logistics of supplying them with fuel and water became too difficult as they moved away from railway lines. One should read up how the British did this during the Boer Wars, where armoured traction engines were used.

Looking forward to the progress in this building log  😃

And here's the prop sanded to shape and with one coat of satin wipe on poly applied.   I'll let it dry a bit more, sand a bit more, apply another coat, and repeat several more times.

Thanks as always for the likes and comments.  Ken, you may be right, though I thought this kit was fairly new.  But I do not know its full history for certain.   But I can say that I cannot imagine this kit without laser cut wood.  Trying to hand cut all of the "lightening holes" in the ribs would drive me insane.

Anyway, with a bit of a struggle, I've attached the landing gear, the engine, and the front cowl.   I already noted issues with the landing gear.  The engine was mostly easy though I did have to snip off a couple "locator pins" on the back of the engine that did not have corresponding holes in the firewall.   The cowl was definitely more of a struggle.  The biggest issue was that it was a rather tight fit and it is tricky to figure out how to grasp the model firmly without breaking things.

At this point, there are just a handful of small parts remaining, plus the propeller and the rigging.  The prop is laminated from 6 or 7 laser cut pieces of a dark wood...mahogany or walnut or something...and then sanded to shape.  I've started on that but have a way to go with it.

Oh, they also provide an acrylic stand that needs to be assembled and glued together if one wishes to use that.

It's been a while but back to the whirlybird.... Decals today, rotors tomorrow

The large grey decals that should have been fitted, by the exhausts, I could not get to go on right at all and the 2 black decals on the side are also not very good but at least they're on. I'll see how it looks but I might paint them instead.

Other than that the rest were no problem.

A bit more done today. Landing gear is on, rotors have been primed. Almost ready for his first coat of gloss.
