  1. I found planking on the bow of my Terror wasn't that bad- that weird little bulge Occre created midships was a bit of fun though! I wish i had done like my Erebus and scratched new frames forward and aft of the midship section. Keith
  2. The 2nd plan shows exactly what i was referring to- note the ice plank supports and railing stanchions for terror on the 2nd plan compared to the upright position on the plan for Erebus (1st plan above) Keith
  3. Also the deck wasn't flush - there was a f'csle and poop deck and the bow sprit was at deck level like Erebus and she handled like a pig! I think i read somewhere that Captian Crozier commented after the keel was elongated after the screw was added and the bowsprit was raised she became a lot friendlier to sail!
  4. having two coal fires in the house i use real coal smashed up in a bag to coal my railway locos- now we have to use re-constituted coal so i saved a few lumps of "real" coal for future projects.- build is looking better and better Keith. Keith
  5. Thanks for the comments and looking in everyone- been slow progress in shipyard- lethargy due to heat and garden shed building taking up time! made and added the stern davits the same as on my Terror build. Also added another band to the fore and main masts under the bibs for the yard trusses - not really clear in pics but also fitted an omega shaped loop for the futtock stays from the tops (should actually be a shackle) and fitted a u shaped piece of brass strip with 3 holes drilled for the yard truss - the bracket is fitted to the yard with a planking pin and left free to turn. On my Terror i rigged rope trusses and chain collars then seen the mention of the foreyard still having its heavy iron truss attached on the wreck in Matthew Betts book! The trusses are from Billings with the central mounting hole moved forward and the old one cut off and files to bring them closer to the mast. Also made the small map/ chart /plotting table -used the kit one cut slightly smaller, cladded with veneer and shaped walnut legs added. Take care everyone and thanks as always for looking in. Keith
  6. this ship is fighting you all the way Greg! - i had the plastic containers for my Occre Erebus and Endurance stashed on a shelf under the workbench and when reaching for something else under there they slid off, opened and mixed all the fittings up including all the extra 4mm and 3mm deadeyes i had ordered for Erebus on top of all the 5 mm ones from both kits 😱. Keith
  7. thanks ian- yep and if i ever get to the billings version there are more slight differences! Keith
  8. you are welcome Greg- to be honest i am coming across more info while building my Erebus! Keith
  9. Welcome to the Terror club- the ply infill method might work to correct the "bulge" that is present on the finished hull. I stuck with the kit planking on my Terror but used closer to scale planking on my Erebus deck. Keith
  10. for the likes and looking in everyone- weather back to rain and wind on and off so a bit of ship yard time. The rudder has been added (drilled extra holes in the pintle straps) - used the Peco blackened trackpins as fasteners and added a sheeve at the top of the rudder in the hole for lifting the rudder out, and made the tiller out of some spare brass rod i had same as on my Terror build. Also added the brackets for storing the spare spars and other timbers - for making the shelter over the deck? Decided to go with black for the funnel as opposed to gun metal i was going to use. take care everyone Keith
  11. Hey Guy with views like that sometimes you just gotta chill and unwind😊 Keith
  12. Welcome back and oh yes- they put my Erebus on hold- i ended up adapting some Amati etched turnbuckle chainplates (chickened out of scratchbuilding the strops like on my Terror) Keith
  13. Wow a summer in July with temps in the high 20s Centigrade - typical for u.k. summers this time of year until the ring of fire went crazy in the 90s and gave us 26 rubbish, rainy summers! Anyways little more work on Erebus with the flues for the galley stove/ forced air heating furnace. The galley stovepipe has a hinged cowl- not sure if KeithS and myself spent much time regarding the heating system flue and on Terror i actually had it coming up the starboard deck, when after consulting admiralty plans and Matthew Betts Terror book it actually comes out to one side and slightly off centre to starboard on the fore companionway - i reduced the depth of the hatch and reduced the runners to suit. Also made the funnel for the steam engine using Aluminium tubing and self adhesive copper tape cut into strips as i did with Terror and and added some strip to make a coaming around it- will be painted gun metal same as the flues. Take care all Keith
  14. looking awesome Daniel- jeez m8 gonna book you into some sort of brain relaxation clinic after that lot! Keith
  15. they had generators that ran off the steam engine as well Keith if memory serves me right all the electrical gear on a lot of the old steamers were supplied that way. Keith
  16. on my armour and railway kits i never use black - i use black primer and then use thinned coats of humbrol matt 67 tank grey and lighter shades of grey if more aging wanted- your wheel house (oops pilothouse across the pond) roof looks the part. Keith
  17. Thanks Keith and Jon - regard the photos i take them from a distance with my smartphone so they are in focus then crop the image on the detail i want to show. The white backdrop is piece of foamboard. Keith
  18. Thanks for looking in- safe to say we have definitely left the occre instructions far far behind! Have done more work on the Massey Pumps - will add handles later as opposed to bending them from the same piece of brass as the cam shaft (shows handles arranged like that on the admiralty plans), also using more thin black card and blackened brass eyes from the occre fittings to make the spider band on the mizzen mast, and added the warping drums to the fore and main jeer winches. take care all and thanks for the likes and comments- always appreciated Keith
  19. i still think you are insane, but another outstanding build Greg- very very well done Keith
  20. If using chain drive on a steam anchor windlass you have two pistons either side of the chain gypsies with a large geared wheel as part of the manual back up - substitute the geared wheel with a drive sprocket and ignore the chain gypsy and warping drums et voila Keith
