  1. Hi Amfibius, My vote is the Caldercraft Victory followed by Mamoli, I don't know much about the others. Having said that I have the Mamoli Victory which I am happy to sell since I had an unexpected windfall recently and couldn't resist temptation, so bought the Caldercraft version. I also live in Melbourne so if you are interested we could come to an arrangement, I have enhanced the Mamoli kit with extra bits to improve it. I have not started the Mamoli kit so it is as purchased except for said extras Gary
  2. Hi Glenn, No I don't have a build log yet, that's on the to do list. Further to the drilling of dummy gun barrel strips, I used a jig comprised of a block of wood cut to fit the gun ports, leave a little romm for movement since the ship and jig must be level to ensure all the holes are correctly located, clamp the ship on the stand and use a miniature spirit level on the deck and also on the jig when it's inserted in the gun port. The wooden block should be about 3" long, a hole was then drilled through the block about 2mm below centre front to back using my drill press to make sure the drill went through vertically. This setup should give you the best chance to align the holes in a consistent manner. Hope this is clear enough for you to follow. The Admiral and I are visiting Victory in late May, pity her masts are off, last saw her in 1997 so will have to be content with that. Gary
  3. Hi Glenn, Thanks for the tip on the bowsprit, I will open mine up now. I posted elsewhwere in the forum a note re the drilling of gun port strips for the dummy gun barrels, I repeat here in case you didn't spot it. I drilled the holes in the strips to 1.7mm instead of 2mm as the instructions say. I found 2mm holes are just too big and result in a sloppy fit. I also drilled them after I fitted the gun port patterns instead of later in the build, they need to be slightly below center to allow the guns to sit in the correct position. Regards Gary
  4. Hi Gil & Kevin, I modified my gun barrel drilling rig, took a deep breath and went at it. After drilling I dry fitted the dummy gun barrels and they look good, all centrally located and the height looks OK. The Caldercraft instructions say to use a 2mm drill bit, the fit was a bit loose in my opinion so after drilling the first hole I changed to a 1.7mm drill bit which produced an interference fit, much better, more control. Others may be interested to know this. I need to get a build log up and running, watch this space. Well, maybe not this one but you know what I mean. Regards Gary PS: expect to pay a visit to the real Victory in May this year, can't wait.
  5. Thanks Gil. Reassuring to know that your holes were too high as well, I will remake the jigs and try again. Yes, I am also concerned the drilling debris will become part of the model, and this was the main reason I considered drilling the holes at this stage. Gary
  6. Thanks Kevin, That is the method I am thinking of using. Do you know if the holes are drilled after lining the gun ports, (what did you do?) and whether they are located centrally in the wooden stock or lower down. The tests I have run with the holes drilled central indicates they will be too high in the gun port. Gary
  7. They were stored both ways it seems. According to the book 'Anatomy of the ship Diana' barrels were stored oriented fore and aft in a bed of shingle ballast with more barrels stored on top of them athwartships, presumably well secured. So it appears both methods are correct. Gary
  8. Hi Gil I have just started on the Caldercraft Victory and have been following your build with great interest, marvellous work. Could you please tell me at what point in the build you drilled out the dummy gun strips for the middle and lower dummy gun barrels, and what method you used to ensure they all lined up correctly. I have the gun patterns in place and have started the first planking. I thought at this point I might drill out the gun strips but having looked at them I am thinking this may not be the right time. Look forward to your advice. Gary
  9. Hi CaptainSteve, Hammock Netting source posted as requested. Gary
  10. After much searching I have found a source of the correct diamond pattern Hammock Netting for period model ships, I was looking in a store called Spotlight for those in Australia and NZ, not sure if they are in other countries but I'm sure there are similar haberdashery, craft type stores. The material is Mosquito Netting and found in the curtain department, it comes in a range of colors but most importantly cream and black it cost $4.99/Metre, enough for a flotilla. Hope this benefits others.

  12. HELP! I am about to drill out the locating holes for the dummy gun barrels in the wooden strips provided. I've decided to do this with all the gun port patterns fitted but prior to planking. I have set up the hull so that it is level and fabricated two small wooden blocks that are a snug fit in the the middle and lower gun ports. I have drilled 2mm holes through the centre of these blocks and find that although I have them level they do not appear to line up properly with the dummy barrel gun strips. I am not confident that the dummy gun barrels will end up in the right place ie: correctly positioned within the gun port. Could someone who has been there advise please. Thanks Gary
  13. Hi Grant, Thanks for the explanation. I know what you mean about Longridge he puzzles me a bit too sometimes. Looks like my reference library is about to grow. Regards Gary
  14. Hi Grant, Victory is looking superb, great work. Forgive my ignorance, but I'm not sure about your reference to Antscherl and TFFM. Could you explain please. My Victory references are Longridge and John Mc Kay 'Anatomy of the ship' I also have Lennarth Petersson's 'Rigging Period Ship Models' if there is another reference I should look into I am interested in knowing. Victory is such a complex build I need all the help I can get. Thanks Gary
  15. Definitely do the keel tapering before gluing the bulkheads. The keel needs to lay flat on a large work table, this makes it much easier to work with. Gary
  16. Hi Glennard, I have also very recently acquired the Caldercraft Victory kit. Yes, it is a monster of a kit. I would like to make a suggestion regarding the middle gun deck if I may. This deck is used to add rigidity when assembling the bulkheads to the false keel. The instructions say to plank part of this deck because it is visible, and to do the planking after this stage of assembly. I have chosen to plank the middle gun deck first before assembling anything to the keel it is much more accessible this way. Another reason is that I am planking all the decks using the four step butt planking method as per the real Victory. A good reference for this type of planking is available on this forum titled simply 'Deck Planking' it is by Ulises Victoria from Mexico, another regular contributor to the forum. Regards Gary
  17. Hi Ray, I just want you to know how much we appreciate your efforts with your build log, I am relatively new to wooden ship building, although I've built models most of my life. I have just finished my second wooden ship, the MS Clipper Flying Fish and she has turned out very nicely, I think. I have HMS Diana and Victory waiting so your log is an invaluable resource. Thank you so much. Gary
  18. Hi Mort, my kit for Diana was missing quite a few parts, the shop where I bought the kit dealt with Caldercraft on my behalf and although it took a few weeks they supplied all the missing parts and then some. Maybe this is the best way to tackle the issue, if you can go through the supplier. BTW I had also sent an email to Caldercraft enquiring about a kit and not received a response. Gary
  19. These lines are shackled together when the sails are off, with the clew line running through a pair of blocks and positioned nearer the yard ie: the clew line is shorter and near to its respective yard, the sheet is longer running up through a sheave at the outer end of the yard below. Hope this helps Gary
  20. Thanks Ray, this log is invaluable to those of us who have Diana on our to do list. Gary
  21. Hi Kevin, I've been quietly following your build, excellent work. Thank you for the latest set of photos, the lighting outside was just right to show off the yellow ochre. I have the 1/90 scale Mamoli Victory waiting in the wings and was a little worried how she would look. I have the Caldercraft paint set for her but most builds I see show her looking rather more yellow, it's been many years since I visited Victory so don't remember exactly how she looks. Thanks Gary PS A belated happy birthday.
  22. Hi Ray, Diana is looking great. I'm keeping notes for my build of this ship, your build log is very detailed and highly informative. My second hand copy of "Anatomy of the ship Diana" has arrived and is in perfect condition, it will be my bible along with your log during the build. Thanks for your efforts Gary
  23. Hi Ray Thanks for the info. I have ordered a copy of the book from Amazon, it is second hand but apparently in pristine condition ( I hope so) the price was good $23.21 AUD but shipping to Australia was $27.80 AUD, still mustn't complain it least it was available. I am following your build log with great interest, a very nice job it is too. I never knew they did deck planking in that manner, thought it was only used on the hull. Out of curiosity, was your kit complete when you received it? I ordered mine from the local hobby shop and both my kit and that of another customer were missing some of the stripwood, it is being addressed by the hobby shop but I feel Caldercraft should do better than that. Back to 18 holes of golf yet? Gary
  24. Hi Ray, I have just bought the Diana kit and am currently trying to source a copy of the Anatomy of the ship Diana book, if you know where to get it could you let me know? I am also interested in the errors on the drawings, would you please post your findings once you clear this up. Thanks Gary
  25. In building a POB model, is it best to taper the bulkheads before or after gluing to the false keel? Gary
