    Anchors

Work begins on the Anchors by filing the bevels into a piece of tapered brass stock for the Shank :

The Shanks and Arms after milling and filing to shape :

The arms are silver soldered to the shank :

Then the Palms (or Flukes) are cut from flat brass stock and soldered to the arms. The assemblies were then blackened using Jax Black - I'd run out of Birchwood Casey Brass Black and was having difficulties importing some more, so Grant Dale very kindly sent me some of this. Thanks again Grant,  it seems to work quite well .

The Stocks are made from Castello in two pieces per anchor. This will allow for a small air gap between them to prevent rot. They were tapered on the disc sander and finished with a fine sanding stick. I spot glued the two halves together before sanding them to shape to ensure they were pefectly similar. The holes for the bolts and treenails were also drilled before assembly to the stocks, and then the pieces were dropped into a jar of Isopropyl to separate them :

Wow, she is coming together! I think I would be afraid to build her in sections like that. My fumbling fingers would remove half of those parts inadverdently!

I know what yo mean about scared doggies, ours hid in the bathtub last night! Couldn't figure out where a 55lb German Pointer could be hiding with all the doors and windows closed until I heard his nails on the tub! Hope yours are doing better.

the place is hopping here........although I'm not spending it where I would like to.   compound that with a dog that is deathly afraid of loud booms,  and you get a very short attention span.   I've kept him close these last couple of days.....last night I was up well after 2 AM.   anyway.......to recap what I've been up to

I put a few lights in the hull to see how it would look.   too bad it was daytime......it might have looked better.

I only have two lights in the hull..........as many as five may be needed.  touch ups were done to the mid ship section.

the fore stays and the three main back stays will be the larger size thread.   I opted to use the kit supplied ratlines.  they cleaned up well and I refined the contours,  getting rid of any mold marks that might be on them.

this part is the front fascia for the bridge deck.......it is sooooooo incorrect.   the slant of the outer edges are wrong,  it appears to be too tall,  and there is no slot cut out for the stairs.   I may have to cement the bow section to the mid section,  in order to straighten it out.

more stays were added to the bow section......all the lower ones will be the smaller thread.   there are quite a few of these lines,  but it will need them all for support,  when the communication lines are installed.  they will span from the fore mast,  all the way back to the mizzen mast.

using clothes pins for weights,  they will be hung off the sides and cemented on the underside of the deck.

almost all of the lines are done on the bow section..........one more pair and the back stay terminating on the boat deck, from the forward structure roof,  are all that's left to do.   there are still a few more parts that need to be added to the bow section.   more to come.......

It's indeed cold comfort, Druxey.   I should have paid more attention when I was planning this build but I plead ignorance.   I've stumbled upon several issues already and this is just one more.  But... it's wood, it can be fixed.  Time to go make some more sawdust..... and a template or two for symmetry.

Mark: if you have been working from Hahn's drawings, the problem lies with his drafting, not your construction accuracy. I've noticed this issue with other Hahn models and ones built from his plans. Cold comfort for you, but....

Sounds like you've got the thought process in place.  Your honest narrative gives all of us a reminder of how what we do today can impact a year down the road.  Your strength is that you forge ahead with the required modifications rather than simply 'make do'.

    Fine work, mate.

    Erik,
Getting the bend of planks will take time.
Have some planks soaked constantly while building will help.
You are doing good, just as per instructions from Chuck.

I managed to get the first two planks formed.  There is definitely a learning curve.  I think I have the process figured out though.  I got both the edge bend and the bow curve correct.  These two planks took 2 hours!

The planks supplied with the kit are rough on one edge, so I lightly sanded them smooth (on all four surfaces).  I'll have to do this with all the planks.

Almost finished.   Only the anchors left to rig.  I was concerned that my rope coils at the bow were too long, but if I made them shorter, I couldn't get them to bend and lay naturally.  They "stuck out" almost straight from the rail.  I added a shot of a 5'6" sailor standing nearby.  i don't think the scale is terrible.  Any thoughts? I think the riding bit rope coils look OK.

I read about a technique using shrink wrap tubing on models for straps, bands etc.  I tried it on my anchors and it worked great.  Just cut to the right width, slide the resulting rings onto  the anchor stock in their proper positions and head in a 300 degree oven for about 3 minutes,  The tubing comes in various sizes and is cheap.  Another great use would be the iron reinforcement rings on the mast.

I'll post finished shots when the anchors are rigged.

    Dave

BTW:  Anyone have a good technique for getting rid of the "fuzzies", especially on the tan rigging?  Dilute white glue?

Nearing the end.  Only two yards to rig and the anchors to finish!  The stern shot is the only one with the rudder fitted.

Lessons learned at this point on framing, fairing, and planking....

I guess I should say that it's not that I lacked the courage but more of the knowledge of deciphering the plans, supplementing them with the correct information and translating it all in my head to a course of action.  And then I got side-tracked...  anyway, after working through the side-track for the last 30 days, I'm re-focused and back on course.  Solution.. try not to get side-tracked by new toys... think further ahead.. instead of 10 steps or 20 steps... look 100 steps.

The problem stems from not fairing the aft frames as far as the Hahn frame drawing show and the lack of knowledge on my part in setting up the transom timbers.   I guess I should have done a better documented ship first....

Same goes for the garboard strake.. I wasn't thinking that far ahead when I did the rabbet.  I've been working through the problem and have a better result which should show when I put that strake in.  Seems I didn't get the bevel quite where it should be in the aft section.

Next update will be after I get everything re-faired and sorted out and the now four strakes of wide planks replaced...  If you hear foul language from the west coast, ignore it.. it's just me sorting out things and venting to myself.    But it will be fun.

    Hi Chris,

Roger and I have talked about it, and he has reached out to them. Initially, they didn't seem too interested, but I've also been in touch with Woody Joe about it. I'm somewhat protective of Woody Joe. As people probably noticed by now, I really like the company and their products, and I'd like to see them do really well. Ages of Sail could potentially carry the kits to make them easier to get here, but I'm not sure how these would be marketed.

Also, since I do some work for Ages of Sail, I fear getting caught in the middle of any possible issues. Not there would be any issues, but I'd feel responsible, and wouldn't want to have to take sides on something, so I'm kind of hesitant to push the two together.

Plus, I'd kind of hate to see the Japanese online sellers cut out of the picture. The main one I've been dealing with has been very helpful and even shipped an out of production kit to me that I ordered from Amazon Japan.

I expect it needs to happen and will likely happen in the next year or so. Woody Joe is now trying to figure out what a good US outlet would be, and I can't really think of any unless they go with a distributor like Great Planes or Ages of Sail. Anyway, instructions need to be translated, and nobody has really talked about that yet.

    Thanks for the birthday wishes.

I'm going to avoid Version 3.0 at all costs.  I'm comfortable with ripping things apart and putting them back together.

As a footnote, I'll probably open a sub-log like Danny did for the ship's boats but not until the first one is nearly done.  I want to try to use Chuck's method but at 1:64.  There's three boats, the longboat, the cutter, and the barge.  Keel's are 1/16" thick cherry, frames are 1/32" cherry, and the planking is 1/32" holly.  I hope I can pull those off.   It'll be a bit as I'm making the drawings (as well as for what I need for the main build) and testing on the laser cutter.

Thanks for the wishes, my friends.

Druxey, there is indeed a fairing issue.  I've studying this and it looks like the low transom piece is the culprit.  Giampiero pointed this out also.  I've been scratching my head, double checking the plans.  The only way to fix this is to rip off the last three (maybe four) strakes at that stern and re-fair.    I was hoping to avoid that, but...  what needs to be done, needs to be done.
