Jack12477 reacted to Jaxboat in conservation wax
Druxey raised my curiosity about beeswax with his comments on conservators wax. I was selling beeswax and its derivatives into the personal care industry at the time. I confirmed all of Druxey's comments with a beeswax/wax expert. Beeswax is a natural product with a very broad range of chemical substances many of which are not "wax". In the long term, beeswax does become slightly acidic. Do not know what the time frame is for the pH effect to occur. Microcrystalline wax is a 100% hydrocarbon based wax with no acid components either as supplied or upon aging. There are different grades of MC wax based on melting point range. I don't remember what the range is for the conservators wax.
There are also different grades of beeswax also, depending if it was bleached to reduce color or distilled to increase melting point. If I was looking to finish a model with wax, I think I would choose carnauba, a plant based natural wax. It is harder than beeswax. For those of a certain age, you might remember Du Pont's Simonize Car Wax. It was almost all carnauba wax with just a touch of a hydrocarbon solvent to make it workable. "Wax on, Wax off", grasshopper .

PS: OCD Chemist peeve - you "dissolve" wax into turps, not melt. You can "melt" wax with the proper application of heat

Hi,
I came across this do-it-yourself hobby table in the latest issue of woodsmith magazine.
I don't have the tools, or skills, but I thought you all might be interested.

Congress replaced an inefficient light bulb with ones containing a toxic substance, mercury. Read the label on the bulb package about what you need to do if you drop a CFL and it breaks - Hazmat team anyone ! Oh and wait till these wind up in the landfills.
I too stockpiled 40's, 60's and 100's

I used a piece of strip 1/32" thick and 1/16" wide drilled several .020" holes in a row down the strip added a drop of CA to each hole to harden and then cut the nuts square around the hole and filed the cut edges square. This technique can also be used with gray automotive gasket material which turns black with CA added. Sometimes the holes have to be carefully re-drill or reamed once the CA is added and before cutting square. Just check first to make sure the hole is open.

The door, Dan, the door! Please close it so both Pud and you may live out your natural life spans. Your riggers did a good running repair, though.

Happy Memorial Day to all. And a moment to remember all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and cannot be with us to share it.
Time for a small update. Have continued working on the quarter deck with the addition of numerous pinrails, cleats, belaying pins (blackened), eyebolts/rings for the cannon rigging and the ship's wheel:
It's really good to get the steering cables, which pass down through the quarterdeck and gun deck, off of the deck where they have been in the way for months! The speaking tube also disappears below into the bowels of the ship. In more modern times I could just picture John Wayne bellowing 'Engine room -----more steam!!' The two wheels were really horrible castings but I did what I could to clean them up including fabricating 3 or 4 handles which were missing. At this scale I wasn't about to attempt scratching 2 wheels (make that any scale).
There are still some stanchions and railings to be installed but I'll hold off on these until the 'heavy lifting' in the waist and bow are complete. Likewise the guns for the QD.
So next up will be the twin binnacles. Here's a preview of the parts layout for one of them:
Hope all is well with everyone!

Jack12477 reacted to Gaetan Bordeleau in Work table height?
1- Jewellers and watchmakers workbench are very interesting in their concept.
The height of the bench brings the work close to the eyes making it easier to see.
2- The other watchmaker workbench is even more interesting because it offers an additonnal feature electric height adjustability of the workbench.
Having the work at the good height simply makes the work easier to do.
3- Inpired from a jewellers workbench, finally discarded because it was too heavy to move.
4- Modelship workbench based on a watchmaker workbench, electric table, when it is easy and fast to change the height, you often adjust at the good working height and you are not oblige to work with the restrictions of only 1 height which in certains circomstances can be painful.
More lower drawers added to suit little tools. When drawers are too high a lot of space can easily be wasted. Small tools are easy to reach.

That's a good recovery job Danny - Pud must have a short life expectancy as that a few lives expended on this build alone (kidding of course - I hope you have many happy years with Pud and the Vulture!)
cheers

I might have been a little premature in my "nice job on the repairs" statement Danny, but I already knew you'd have her back ship-shape in no time. But we have to remember Pud's in training and mistakes are inevitable. He's going to be a great helper, specializing in rigging.

Working on the first strakes. The center and aft sections go on first, then the drop plank. First pieces are tapered to about 1/2 full width between bulkheads B & J then installed in segments. Aft section takes a big twist as it gets to the square tuck. Next are the drop planks.
