Hello everyone I have finished the lower fore topsail with its special bearing support device. I've made it movabel like on the real ship - unfortunately, one thing that won't be seen when it's all finish  one day, but I'm glad to know that it's working properly.

Still working on the forward spine. First, some Primer (Vallejo):

Details of the anchor and electrical feed. The device is glued with epoxy two components for extra strength. Once the lid (right) is closed, it will not be possible to access the wires and anchor nut:

I just finished assembling the some 30 PODs required for the front spine.... Slightly boring, but not too bad overall. In this picture, you can see the difference between the plain molded white of the parts and the base coat in dark gray, oversprayed with white. It is worth the extra efforts, for sure.

All the PODs are in place and glued to the spine:
A heavy coat of dark gray (German Grey) to finalize the whole Kebab:

With the rear spine completed, it is now time, of course, to start working on the front spine:

The forward rod is put in place in the central module and inserted all the way into the brass tube. Fitting is perfect and very tight. Then, the PODs holder modules are placed and carefully glued. Finally the forward spine is removed from the Central module and the rear section left aside. It is simply not practical to work on the entire vessel as it is far too long and too fragile.

It is then time to start assembling the anchor of the living spaces, the main sphere and unique landmark of this vessel:

And this is where we stand:

The whole vessel is starting to come together: it is really long and so skinny...

Seeing a picture of Discovery or watching the movie is one thing. Holding that skeleton of model is another.... It is quite unique.

The electrical wires are driven through the spine and the positive side of the circuit will be connected to the second side holder. The holder is a 3 mm special brass nut designed to be inserted with pressure into wood or plastic. It will then be glued and secured to the front anchor of the living space.

Yellow and green wires will be sent to the sphere for the main deck lights. The rear of the sphere is also receiving a piece of that brass tube to make the alignment of the sphere perfect with the spine and to prevent any sagging. The sphere is going to be heavy with the PE decks and lights. Besides, it is a massive piece of polystyrene.

Here is what it will look like:

For the time being, I want to be able to dissociate the sphere from the spine. This is done to work more easily on the background and holder and to allow me more flexibility with the inside building and painting of the sphere. Again, I am using my miniature rare earth magnets and their terrific sticking power to secure the rear section of the sphere with the spine:

That section (below) will be tied to the spine, whereas the section (above) is the rear section of the sphere.

Yes I did  . Thanks for the replies guys  .

Speaking of problems - I found a doozy. A long time ago, when I was building the front bogie, I made this drum-like piece which turns out to be part of the steering mechanism :

This is the only diagram of this part - nothing in further diagrams to show how it fits, so at the time I put it aside with the thought it may become more obvious later in the build. Unfortunately it should have been fitted much earlier before I'd fitted the main axles and wheels, as the front axle is supposed to go through the middle of it. How to fix the problem?

I approached the dilemma with the thought in mind of leaving it off altogether if I couldn't work out a solution. There was no way I could easily remove the axle as it was attached to the wheels with CA glue - impossible to remove without causing major damage to already fitted parts. In addition the crank and a few other parts would also have to come off.

I came up with the idea of splitting the drum in half and slipping it over the axle. If the idea didn't work then I'd have had to leave it off, but at least I wouldn't have damaged anything else. The sequence below shows how I did it. First pic is of the axle it had to fit around and the seemingly impossible place it was in :

Removing the two hexagonal ends was fairly easy, as I hadn't scraped off the clear coat. A single-edge razor blade did the trick :

After cleaning everything up the three pieces went on relatively easily :

    All done  :

Propulsion block more or less completed. The only things remaining to be done are the exhaust plates with the PE grills.

In the meantime, I have sprayed the sub-base using Tamiya German Grey:

Hopefully, this color will provide some depth and delineate the various panels, when spraying the light gray and white on top.

    Hi all,

Thanks for all the likes and to Chris for the nice words.

I thought I would chip away at some of the remaining smaller deck components including a few skylights and companionways.  I had already started prepping for the PE portholes before I remembered to take a photo.

The 0.2mm and soldered handrails, g1, g2 & g3 for skylights No. 80 and 82. These took an inordinate amount of time to complete.

    Photo showing the above assembled.

As usual nothing glued in place yet but shown in their locations for effect.
    Bow skylight No.80

    Stern skylights No.82

    Skylights and companionways.

Well that’s all for this break. Probably a couple of months before back again.

    Cheers

    Hi Danny,

Thanks for the info, I may use that method for the funnels.  Unfortunately the bent ladder is supposed to be curved.  For some reason the Port and Starboard ladders are different but I messed up the ‘curve’…in hindsight I should have matched the straight ladder but right now going to leave as is.

The 6” turrets are more or less done.

The parts for a rear sliding armoured hatch ready for attaching.

    Rear observation cupola.

Front observation cupolas.  These could have been neater.

The turret rings…bizarrely I could only find 5 strips so had to make the 6th from scrap and will paint to match.

    Turrets all skinned up.

    Finished(ish) turrets.

A few shots shown in place.

I still have the ladders and top hand rails to do but will set them aside for the time being and work on some other bits and pieces.

    Cheers
    Slog

The roof is lined on the inside as well. I pre-formed it before gluing it on. There are 8 air vents in the top section :

The coal bunker has now been fitted to the cab, and the cab roof as well. It sounds easy when you say it quickly  :

Next job will be to fit the entire boiler/cab/coal bunker unit to the chassis.

hof00 reacted to OceanGopher in Glad Tidings by OceanGopher - FINISHED - Model Shipways - Scale 1:24 - First Wooden Ship Model Build - Pinky Schooner
Just to start with, I have never built a wooden ship model. I use to build WWII model planes but that was way back in my early teen years. I had lots of fun with them  so I thought why not at least attempt to see if I could do a wooden ship model.
After reading several articles about what would be an appropriate model for a beginner, I settled on the Glad Tidings Pinky Schooner from Model Shipways.  Because there have been a number of build logs done with this model, I thought this would be at least a model I might be able to complete.
I spent the first six months just putting together the hull and its masts. That just about did me in.  I didn't keep a daily/weekly build log .. I instead snap pictures all along the way.  So this build log will be of those pictures.  I hope some of these might come in handy for others out there trying to do their first model. Hopefully I'm using the right terminology for the different bits and pieces so that others can follow along and learn.

    Nice recovery and continued build!!
I do like the "Joggled" Deck detail, wish I had done it on mine....
The Bulwark Stanchions look great, there's a lot of them.

In the past, I had started this model but my Abyssinian cats put paid to that, chasing a largish Bush Rat inside, upsetting the Kit contents and pretty much trashing the whole thing.

    Hence my Sergal/Mantua version....

(I do have an "Updated" A/L version in my closet, one with Sails.
I have heard that this is a Chinese kit? Don't know....)

    Anyway, I'm following with interest....

Hi all finished the planking on the bow (those little bends in the 2x2mm sapeally were a real pain in the bum, that is the 12th set of those, they kept snapping when trying to bend them) I finally managed to get the bend by soaking them in boiling water then giving them 2 mins in the microwave.
