Beautiful job weathering that wood deck.

My build will be lightly weathered because the Admiral Graf Spee did not take fire till the 'Battle of River Plate'.  I am either going to model her as she left Germany or as she looked before she sported the bow wave and the second darker grey camo pattern.  I love the bow wave, but that is how most model her and I hanker to be different...

Anyway, if you could summarize the techniques you used to weather those wood decks I would be forever in your debt.  I have never implemented a wood deck and paralysis by analysis is starting to take hold🤪

This is an interesting thread.  I think one of the success resources this site provides is the log.  I allows the experts to make their posts and show us beginners how many aspects of the build are accomplished.  It also allows us beginners to make our posts and seek advice on the model shipbuilding process.  As I research my future subjects on this site I find that some builders attract very little attention to their logs while others become rather lengthy with many builders "pulling up a chair to follow along".  How do these logs become so attractive.  I guess I am asking is what does a log require in order to attract attention and the resulting comments.  Put another way, what constitutes a good log.

Completed.  After three month of work I declared the project completed.  I know that this has not been a detailed log of construction steps but I am pround that I brought this log to its completion.  If anyone has any questions, please feel free to send me email.

To any one thinking of building this kit.  The die cut parts fit.  The wood is in good shape (but they have it measured down to the last inch so be careful with your cuts).  When done it makes a really neat conversation piece.

slowly getting there-- how come life keeps getting in the way?--doesn't it know I'm trying to build a boat LOL !

I made the small boat flotilla. I am in the process attaching them and then doing the lashings.. If you look close the two most inner boats by the mast  are lashed the others are all just placed in position.

Very nice looking model.  I think I would have liked the build.

    Hi all,

Thanks for the looks and likes. It's been a bit since I've posted on this project. I've been pouring a lot of efforts into the main superstructure on this ship. Something I've learned since last time; this kit is actually geared more for a much more recent time period than I had originally thought. Comparisons between the kit and online pictures make this much more clear to me now. Here are some pictures of my progress. I'm still needing to paint and decal much of this before I permanently stick it down to the deck and hull.

I hope you all enjoy and thanks for following!

    Lets start.
First the basics, with glue the fuselage together.

Next, drilled holes for the stand nuts.

Neatly glued in with two components resin. Just like the internal structures to stiffen the torso.     This time I treated myself to the elegant stands from Pontos. Look really great.     Then the first lower deck comes into the hull. Now it is really very stable.     Next, the holes for the crampons. Nice straight through the drilling templates from Pontos.     And the usual drilling out of the portholes.     After researching the few images available, I noticed that the porthole that sits on the model below the anchor hawse did not exist. Herby63 discovered this too.
This was then closed with a round styrene profile.      Filled and sanded.     Another mistake that needs to be corrected. Merit made recesses in the fuselage to accommodate the etched piece gunports from the model in the correct location.
Since I’m using the pontos set here and the hinges of the gunport on the original ship were riveted onto the hull from the outside, I close them with styrene.     I’ll be busy with that for a while.

Question, do you think you could have cut the hull to make a waterline model?

Those seam liines are pesky.  Pop up where you least expect them.

Length is not the only issue.  I could probably display a 36 inch model of a modern day destroyer but not a 36 inch model of a British ship of the line.  The mast height would be a killer.

About 2 foot. With age a small ship at a larger scale is appreciated.
