Hello,

I too am in the process of building the Bismarck.  Here is a link to a group of videos that someone has put together on building the model ship.  Hope it helps.

Nice one Ian!!

I'll be following your build with interest.

(Ps. I'm still struggling with the Main Deck Rail Stanchions and provided "Thread."

I have ordered the Eduard 1/200 Chain Link Railing from Super Hobby out of sheer frustration. The photos of this stuff look good anyway. I will post my experiences when I receive this in two - four weeks, hopefully....)

Cheers and Regards,

Harry.

Completed Builds:

A/L Bluenose II

A/L Mare Nostrum

Sergal/Mantua Cutty Sark

A/L Pen Duick

A/L Fulgaro

Amati/Partworks 1/200 Bismarck

A/L Sanson

As we go along I am relying on everyone here shouting when I get to any bit/section that either needs correcting or advice where you had issues-- Make my life a fraction easier :)   'Standing on the shoulders of Giants' I think the expression goes...

Well I started the easy bit----- Wow was it not straight when I joined the two parts together-  I know she went round in circles before she sunk-- she would have gone round in circles when she was launched LOl

what a great idea.  I know exactly what you mean.  How many sheets did you require for this task?

Blimey --Parts 4 to 5 (vertical frame for the stern section) just as bad as the two deck halves earlier.  What a terrible fit for such and expensive kit !!!

Hi Targa,

I have the many Stanchions, double/single, easy to space and drill, but, having pre-painted, all the tny holes are partially clogged. I don't have a drill bit small enough and a pin is too large.

So, out of sheer frustration I made the Eduard order, for Trumpeter but should be fine for Amati, same length, etc.

The Hull is about 2.5m both sides inc. so how many sheets? I don't know. Enough for 2.5m?

I guess I'll see when it arrives.

(Apologies for hijacking your thread, Ian.)

Cheers and Regards,

Harry.

Hi Ian,

Not such a wonderful fit at all.

Should be relatively easy to rectify?

I'm spending more time correcting the wooden parts than I would have if I made them from scratch. The design is really good, the the fun in the project drains away with the frustration and annoyance. The old kits I built were far less inaccurate. ? Imperfect or inappropriate use of modern technology + lack of consideration for the purchaser/builder?

current build- Swan ,scratch

on shelf,Rattlesnake, Alert semi scratch,Le Coureur,, Fubbs scratch

completed: nostrum mare, victory(Corel), san felipe, sovereign of the seas, sicilian  cargo boat ,royal yacht caroline, armed pinnace, charles morgan whaler, galilee boat, wappen von hamburg, la reale (Dusek), amerigo vespucci, oneida (semi scratch) diane, great harry-elizabethan galleon (semi scratch), agammemnon, hanna (scratch).19th cent. shipyard diorama (Constructo), picket boat, victory bow section

LOL-- but I'm pragmatic- Just take it one step at a time.. Mind you there should be no excuse for any manufacturer not to have correctly fitting laser cut parts.

I put little wedges in the gaps to tighten the joints.  Seems to have worked for me.

In fairness, I must update these comments, because as I proceed with the build, the PE and plastic parts are really compensating for the initial frustration. The amount of work and expertise that must have gone into the planning details is phenomenal. The issue with the wood should be easily rectified; then the kit will be perfect.

slightly confused during dry fit of top decks--- advice anyone?

The hull is perfectly flat and so are the deck main and stern sections  --yet  the bow kicks up quite a bit it seems far to much for just a bit of sanding-- is it supposed to? I cant work out if it is wrong or right (i suspect wrong lol ). I just need to check the whole deck is supposed to be flat before I take lots of corrective action?

Hello Ian,

The sheer from the center towards the bow is right and there should be a sheer toward the stern as well, but this is not as distinctive as the sheer forward. I would say there is no problem if you build a flat deck in the aft section.

I suggest to have a look on the models of Peter Beisheim or Rüdiger Eschker for example....
