Piet reacted to Omega1234 in Symphony by Omega1234 - FINISHED - 1/200 scale - 112' Ketch
Hi everyone
Another milestone was reached last night, with Symphony's two masts being stepped (roughly and temporarily, of course, at this early stage). The main boom has also been fashioned along with the spreaders on each mast.
Heaps more work to do, though.
'
Hope you enjoy these photos.
Cheers

Piet reacted to Dan Vadas in Decorative Yacht by Dan Vadas - FINISHED - RESTORATION
Hi all,
My neighbour just handed me a Yacht that may or may not have been made somewhere in Asia, or could be Scratchbuilt, to do a Restoration on.
It's not too bad for what it is - a couple of cracks in the hull (which makes me think Asian), the masts are loose, it's VERY dirty, and the rigging needs re-tying.
It shouldn't take me more than a couple of days (where have I heard THAT before? )

I suspect that once you go back to the Syren, she'll be huge to you. This is incredible work. I can't believe those cannons though... wow.

Piet reacted to Omega1234 in Pirate Ship by JesseLee - FINISHED - BOTTLE
Hi Jesse
She's coming along beautifully and those cannons look great.
PS. Is that your Syren making a cameo appearance in the background? If so, nice!
Cheers

Tying yards to masts........

The glue didn't bond the brass wire & wood base on the cannons very well so I cut out card stock bases instead. Glued several layers till it was thick enough, glued the wire on, snipped it off, filed end & painted. This worked pretty well & at this scale looked ok. Added wood channels & cut slots for shroud lines.

Piet reacted to JesseLee in Pirate Ship by JesseLee - FINISHED - BOTTLE
I decided against the wire staples for channels. As you can see I have removed them & I am carving out notches for wood channels to be glued on.

Hi Jesse!
Very nice work!
You can try to use thin tubes for guns, such as needle syringe. You can also try to carve the guns out of bamboo.
Best Regards!
Igor.

Number one and two shrouds must have not been fully secured to the stave - and moved/pulled forward, as they were not in their natural position

Indeed, sir. It looks 1000% better. What was it, too far forward on the stave? Port side is shaping up wonderfully.

Piet reacted to texxn5 in Charles W Morgan by texxn5 - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:64
Got the 7 whaleboats outside shaped. Started working on the interior shaping. Got the hull shapes for the 2 boats that will be turned upside down and lashed to the Shelter roof finished. Only need to do the exterior details on these 2. I left the bottoms off of the 5 boats to hang from the davits. It is easier for me to shape these like this so I don't gouge the bottom trying to get in the tight spots. Then I glue the bottom on and finish shaping the outsides. I can't believe I'm actually getting to work on them some...fun and games in the old camp ground...

Starting to shape the boats on the belt sander. The first two will not be detailed inside since they will mount to the Shelter Roof upside down. The remaining 5 will be shaped outside first, then carved and sanded on the inside walls. Then detailed to the hilt for fun before hanging on the ship. Got 4 of them rough shaped today.

Piet reacted to Revier in SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse 1897 by Mirabell61 - FINISHED - scale 1:144 - POF - first German four stacker of the Norddeutscher Lloyd line
Very nice proect! I see forward with greatest interest, because an grand-uncle of me use "Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse" in August/September 1913 on a passage from Bremen to New York.
Can you send me a photo of the Body-Plan-Cross-section (length-cut)? I will illustrate the story of my family and search for pictures of interest.
Sorry, but my english is only for the kitchen...
Best regards!
Revier.

many thanks for your comments, Michael, Bob and Christian,
Micheal,
in this small scale its not so easy to work out the fine details. I`ve seen that professional model builders often have a certain experience with details, but they also have special tools and techniques I`m not familiar with. Windows, portholes, etc. are sometimes only painted on, but in high precision...
Bob,
I was also thinking of low meltpoint metal (have already bought some like used for melting luck charms on new year), together with a Silicone mold.
The only reason for hesitating so far, was because I like the surface appearance of shiny brass. Also the post Treatment of such Little castings takes much time in fairing, removing burrs, etc..
Thanks for dropping in Christian,
and for your comment..

Piet reacted to GLakie in Sovereign of The Seas by SawdustDave - FINISHED
I know all too well how boring it gets in there Dave. Even with Cable TV (at an out-of-pocket cost of course), I was bored sicker. Used to look forward to the nurses coming in to check on me though. Gave me something to do by telling them a few jokes. Don't think their Supervisor liked it much, but hey, I figured if I could drive 'em nuts, they'd kick my a** out early. Hang in there man. It can't last forever.
Cheers

SOS UPDATE....
So here's a shot of the total progress since Friday's update.
It looks like it also represents the progress I will be making over the next several days.
It may be some of my best work yet.
(So sorry guys.... I'm really bored right now)

Piet reacted to michael mott in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Checking in again, great to see the progress on the planking, I would imagine that on the full size ships of the period that a 3 inch variation would have been part of the plus or minus tolerance during the planking up from the keel and would have been corrected over a few planks as Druxey suggested on the model planking.

Mark I released Number one shroud from the futtock stave, and it now lines up a lot better, as to weather it is good enough, I will wait to see how the Port side goes
