Louie da fly got a reaction from thibaultron in Medieval longship by bolin - FINISHED - 1:30 - based on reconstruction Helga Holm
Yes - it's from c. 1325, well into the period when stern rudders were in use. But I agree, a longship with one is quite strange.

This is wonderful! Yet another of the growing band of people making models outside the general run of the mill. And particularly mediaeval ships (my own particular passion).
I'll be following with great interest.

That's a major milestone, taking her off the mould (British and Australian spelling - Americans spell it mold).
She looks very good - very graceful hull shape.

That’s what I was thinking as I was watching. It’s amazing the skill and labor involved with shipbuilding. My ulterior motive was hoping, somewhat, that by watching it would entice you to add the rivets to your build 😈.
Beautiful job on the figures. They look right at home on the deck. My skills at detailed painting have never been that good. One of the reasons why I try to steer clear of painting my models unless it it’s one solid color, or lacks the fine details.

Well, that's fair enough. It was just on an issue of workability. They've obviously proved it is workable that way.

The planning and need to figure out how to do things is one of the reasons why I will probably continue with scratch building rather than kits. Full freedom and full responsibility means that the feeling of accomplishment is higher.
Btw, this model is not a viking ship. It’s at least 250 years to late. The most telling evidence is the stern rudder, rather than a steering oar. The hull shape clearly follows in the same tradition though. Form follows function; what was already perfected didn’t need to change.

Hi guys thanks for looking in and I should have posted an update on what is happening. The lack of posts results from a few reasons, chiefly that after a 4 month hard ( I mean very very restrictive) lockdown here I had to put the model aside for a while to catch up on all the Spring/Summer chores and the 'honey please do' list At least the outcome of the lockdown has been great as we have all but eliminated any community transmission of covid for the time being.
The other reasons being tied to RESEARCH (ugh, it is becoming a chore now ) I cannot progress the remaining deck furniture until I finalise the Rigging and Belaying Plans. I am about 25% into that. In the meantime the lower masts have been made and I will soon post an update on the 'tops' which are also of a very 'different design to those commonly seen, even in this era. Unfortunately analysis of the available imagery when compared with the Rigging Warrant results in a rigging and belaying plan that does not align with those offered by contemporary and other authors such as Kipping, Fincham, Underhill, Crothers, McKay etc. As such I am having to follow each line individually in a 'virtual' configuration to determine the likely rigging arrangement and belaying points such that they do not interfere with each other and conform with the imagery.
One example being that unlike the options proffered by the authors, the topmast backstays were configured the opposite of the usual rigging practices in that the forward backstay was set-up as a breast (permanent not temporary) and the after set-up as a standing backstay (preventer) to a rigging screw in the channels. Anyway more on all of this as I get to grips with the rigging in the new year. Hopefully the new year will bring a return of the 'mojo' I need to complete this.
cheers, and again, thanks for your interest Chuck and Keith.

Louie da fly got a reaction from Doreltomin in Amelia by Keith Black RESTORATION - Decorative Carrack Warship
Hi Keith,
I'd agreee with Boxbuilds that she represents an English ship - the cross of St George (red cross on a white field) over and over again on sails, flags and shields.
The other shields seem to be generic - simple designs that would be easy to paint - usually dividing the shield into two parts horizontally (called in heraldic terminology per fess) or vertically (per pale), or with a simple vertical bar (argent, a pale azure = white field, with a blue vertical bar), plus a couple with a lion standing up in threatening position (rampant) on a white field (argent, a lion rampant gules). If the field behind the lion had been gold/yellow and there'd been a double red border with fleurs de lis, it would have been the Scottish royal coat of arms
As it is, it's nothing in particular.
Another point I'd make is that it was presumably made for the English (or at least English-speaking) market. The name-plate says Germany, not Deutschland.
Its shape is reminiscent of a lot of contemporary pictures of carracks, where the lines were exaggerated, with the stem and sternposts leaning inward far too much
Yes, it's a decorator model, but it's rather cute and has its own charm, and as you say, its age now makes it a historical item in its own right. You're doing a nice job of restoring her. Keepup the good work.

Louie da fly reacted to woodrat in Yenikapi12 by woodrat - FINISHED - 1/16 scale - a small Byzantine merchant vessel of the 9th century
The quarter rudders are made and temporarily fitted to a brace mount with guides. Note the blade is symmetrical and flat in cross-section whereas later quarter rudders were assymetrical and foill shaped in cross-section. This type of rudder is closer to the Graeco-roman than the mediaeval. Note the reinforcing lashings which are seen on later roman empire bas-reliefs.

Straight out of the Cowdray engraving!
which also contains this picture of the Great Harry
- unfortunately the original painting was destroyed in a fire and all we have is this 18th century copy, and I have my doubts about its faithfulness to the original - the copyist wasn't all that good at portraying ships.

And have a look at surviving Viking ships to see if the rivets are even visible! Putting them on may make it look less accurate rather than more.

To further complicate the picture, I believe that there is archeological evidence of a large English sailing ship that was originally clinker planked. During a rebuild, the steps on the frames supporting the lapstrake planking were dubbed off and she was carvel planked. I’m not sure if this fits into the timeframe of the Great Harry but it shows the sort of things that were done.
A number of years before Mary Rose had been investigated one of the noted British miniature model makers built a model of her (Mary Rose) based on the evidence that he could be perfectly sure of- A slightly choppy sea with two masts and tops sticking out of it!
