Chris, welcome to MSW. Treasure that relationship you have with your father. It's a gift not given to all.

Ryland Craze reacted to Clark Griswold in Need Help Identify 2 Model Sail Boats Recently Inherited From Grand-Father's Estate
The greatest value of any model is assigned by the builder by the time and love he/she put into it. Many of us only dream of a descendant caring enough to not put in a garage sale. I see this as a crossroads... you could enter the hobby and carry-on your great grandfather's ship modeling legacy with hopes of restoring the models eventually or you can put some coin down and enjoy them in their own right as family relics.
There's no wrong choice here, but we'd love to have you join our ranks.

For much the same reason as any other work of art. If an amateur grandparent painted a picture of a subject that had been painted many, many times before (particularly a "paint-by-numbers" or "Elvis on black velvet" work,) it's probably not worth much, but, if it's a nice enough painting to look at that you'd want to hang it on your wall, then it's worth cleaning up and framing and hanging it up. It will never bring a high price at an auction, but you will always have a nice picture "painted by my grandfather" hanging on your wall to give you pleasure. On the other hand, if your grandfather was Pablo Picasso...

Ryland Craze reacted to Oldsalt1950 in Patent Model Ship (F19083)
It apperas to be a boat design that was submitted to the U.S. Patent office for approval. It would be nice if it were possible to have a clear picture of the rest of the inscription on the stem post by the F19083. Models of invention, devices or their improvement were often submitted when a drawing or the actual object was not possible. The boat is a keeper' Hope this shed some light on what you have. By the way what was your grandfather's profession?

Ryland Craze reacted to Howard_And_Olivia in Patent Model Ship (F19083)
Upon further estate cleaning today, we found this interesting model boat carefully packed inside a steamer trunk. It was wrapped in
newspaper dated much older than both of us with Grandpa's handwriting description that says "Patent Model Lifeboat". We are
not sure what that means, but definitely look interesting. There's "F19083" written on the interior wood (not Grandpa's handwriting), so
we don't think Grandpa built this one. It's about 30 inches long and very light in weight. The side are all wood with tiny little brass nails
and a few tiny brass screws on the bottom base. Any idea what this model boat is for?

Hi Chris and welcome to Model Ship World. It sounds like you have a close relationship with your father. We are glad to have you as a member. Are you a ship modeler or just wanting to get started is this hobby?

I started on the mast platforms and put on one thin coat of black. The laser cut parts made this fairly easy.
And then I started shaping the masts. Started with the foremast. Since I mostly have hand tools, I'm shaping it by hand with files. I made a little block with a v-groove in it to hold the dowel and give me a surface that I could file parallel to.

Since I'm at a good stopping point on the hull, I took some snapshots of it.

Ryland Craze reacted to DanB in Lowell Grand Banks Dory by RMillet - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:24
Your Dory is looking good!. If you are missing the wood for the gunwale, there is a form on the Model expo site to contact them for replacement parts. The other thing I found was that the rope they supplied was way too big. It was 2mm line and would not fit thorough the holes at the stern and bow. Even if you enlarge them, I think it still looks too big. I wound up buying some 1 mm line but even that may have been too big as I still had to enlarge the holes.
Get an N95 dust mask at a hardware store (it can be the kind with a valve in it). I have had to make myself remember put it on when I start sanding, but it is important. I try to keep it somewhere in sight on my bench. The sanding will stir up dust you can not see and it will wind up in your lungs. It is even more important if you have asthma.

Thats cheating....
Like the Capstan and stove there are plenty of little pieces. But having this made of boxwood really does add a lot to the model if done well.
That goes without saying...but for these mini kits there are two other secret weapons. They may seem obvious but it is often overlooked.
First....Keep it clean....Wash your hands thoroughly first. Like you were going into surgery. Keeping tiny parts clean is so crucial. Use lots of sand paper. Meaning as soon as it gets dirty with char, throw it away. Otherwise it will just dirty up all your parts. I went through so much 400 grit sandpaper making the lantern. Removing the char carefully without getting it on my fingers and spreading it around.
Second....magnification....when making these small fittings I use the strongest magnification possible. You can only see when its 5" in front of you and this helps a lot. Great for tight joints on small parts and keeping your parts clean.
The lantern probably should have been a bit higher but I couldnt bring myself to drill through the boat carving on the stern. I drilled for the bracket through the water instead. This proved to be a mistake after looking at it for a while. So since these pictures were taken I moved the lantern higher and filled the hole in the carving. Its much better now. And you cant tell I ever hesitated.
I have a ton more construction photos and will be processing them soon. But while working on the model I have now fallen so far behind with rope making and other parts I will be very busy for the next week. So no more building for me.
But this just leaves the headwork. From the photos of the hull above that is pretty much what the finished hull will look like since you cant see the headrails arent completed. I have to write chapter 11 as well.

Yeah, I didn’t think it would be an issue. But now that I know, I will be picking up a dust mask asap.

Yes, coming along nicely, RM. Do wear a dust mask; basswood particles in the air are very fine.
