The deck has been laid. I used maple from Crown Timberyard, with a boxwood waterway. . I like the subtle variations and look of the maple, and had used it previously on Granado. I rough counted the treenails at somewhere over 1800 holes...They were done with the drill and fill method. This filler ended up having a bit more contrast than I wanted after staining, but the deck furniture and armament will hide a good bit of the "busy-ness".

    I also hung the rudder.

    On to the deck furniture.

Leaving paradise to return to cold Wisconsin.  Ready to restart my modeling after a 2 week break.  Here's a view from the villa on St. Martin, FWI we rented for the family.  It's good to be retired!

Thank you kindly Dan! Yes I actually learned about the garboard strake rather accidentally when getting the plank measurements of Lively from Dave S. I then looked through the practicum he has of Lively (a very similar ship to these cutters) and noticed the explanation on applying the garboard so to accomplish this I ordered a sheet of veneer which I can cut out whatever is needed.  This will be partly coppered over and any mistakes shall be hidden thusly, but the process will teach me the mechanics of planking which I will then transfer to Sultana which doesn't have copper.

And yeah I'll probably drill and add a handle of some sort over where the hatch is

    Hi Charlie -

The stands came out nicely.  They will support your models through all the tribulations yet to come.

But you also need a way to hold and support the hull upside down when you are doing the planking.  The easiest way I found for a small hull is to temporarily screw a square cut "handle", maybe 1" x 1", down the centerline of the deck.  You can position the screws so the holes will later be covered by deck houses or other fittings.  Then the model can be flipped over and the handle held in a vise.  I see you have a Keel Klamper device, which may work for you.

As far as planking widths, here is another wrinkle - the plank that runs along the keel is called the 'garboard strake' and is wider, about 1 1/2 times the width of the majority of the hull planks.  The next plank up, known as the 'first broad strake' is also wider than hull planks, but not quite as wide as the garboard.  This is rarely seen on a model, especially since most are either painted below the waterline to simulate the tarry stuff used to combat teredo worm, or the hull is coppered, covering everything. Not an important nit to pick, but you seem to want to get the details right, a mindset that I applaud.

I am enjoying watching your progress.

    Dan

Very interesting stuff guys thank you. I do have the NRG arcticle as well as the Ship Model Shop Notes II which both discuss the color schemes of period ships. Thing is I want to make a point that color scheme's from 1812-15 are a bit different than 1815-1825 and then 1825 onward (basically all black and white). The period right after the war is a weird time since it was the beginning of the standardization of colors to the 2 tone but wasn't quite there yet, ships that survived the war entered dock for refits so that by 1825 the navy was pretty much standard. Anywhoo I spoke more with Dave from Lumbreyard and we had a discussion again about what was most likely the color patterns on these types of ships. So I've modified my color patterns a bit what I am seeing is that the inside bulwarks were probably green, the outside black with either a white or green striping maybe red as well. Dave mentions Mahogany (reddish color) could have been used for trim work and that the cap railings might have been in bright natural wood so with that in mind, here are some layouts of what I'm thinking I may wind up doing based on new information. Feedback is most welcomed

CharlieZardoz reacted to EJ_L in Le Soleil Royal by EJ_L - FINISHED - Sergal - Scale 1:77 - 1669 Version
Actually started building tonight also. Glued the false keel together and removed the bulkheads from the sheets and dry fitted them to the keel. I will hold off on actually gluing them together for a while as I want to test fit the decks and see what changes I need to make for some of the things I want to do. The main change that I know will require some extensive rework will be in the cabins. I would like to detail the cabins out and I have some LEDs to simulate lantern light to illuminate the cabins so those details can be seen.

As a curiosity I wanted to compare the scales of la Couronne (1:100) to Soleil Royal (1:77). This is not a comparison of the actual ships to each other as the scales are different but mostly to see how much larger of a model I am building compared to the last. I still have no idea where they will eventually find berth at but as I still have plenty of time to figure that out and build a display for them.

So please, pull up a chair and enjoy the very long journey I am starting out on.
