Planking work is progressing extremely slowly. All boxwood planks have been glued with aliphatic resin but I have reverted to epoxy for the Ebony 'Black strake'.Slow going as it works out at four parallel planks from lower chainwale down to the black strake. These planks have to conform to the sheer and many compound curves of the hull. Some severe clamping techniques have been employed to allow this.Various 'dogs' have been spot glued to the hull allowing the use of wedges and 'stops' have been spot glued to get the planks to follow the sheer. These are only obechi so are easy to break off and sand flush. The pencil line represents the waterline, which is in abeyance yet as to whether I will splice the ebony/boxwood along this line.
Received my Brynes drawplate this week ,fixings will be boxwood on boxwood and copper on the ebony.

Back at it after a travel break. I've done the stern frames and the framing of the stern ports. Fitting and placing those sills and lintels was a fussy business, even using the stern drawing as a template, as suggested by Chuck.

Now the fun begins. Time to start the planking.

Some progress to report. I completed the prep for planking by adding the square tuck stern piece and fillers and then painting the ports. I opened my last ever bottle of Pollyscale ATSF red for the ports.

I then did the first layer of the wales, which was pretty straightforward. Now, it's on to the topside planking.

Planking is now underway. I have completed the port side topside planking ( to the point of rough sanding). The caulking is simulated by pencil on one side and end of each plank. Since I've never been able to accurately plank between ports by adding individual planks, I use a method of building up units of planking , which allows me to get perfectly straight edges and correct sizing to obtain the 1/64" rebates around the ports. Where required, the planks are pre-bent to shape before gluing up the unit.

Now it's on to the starboard side to repeat the process.

    Hi All,
Well, I’ve been working on my first boxwood frame.  Not an entire success, but as usual I’m enjoying it and of course learning a lot, so all is good!   Firstly, I tried to cut much closer to the template lines than I did for my test frame to follow Mark and Pete’s advice and so avoid excess fairing. As you can see from the images, I  overdid it and ended up cutting things too close in a few places so I need to learn to be more precise using my handsaw. I also need to learn to be smoother with the saw to avoid leaving vertical saw lines on the edges. I went ahead and made up the frame using these pieces anyway in spite of their problems to practice the assembly step again.   Now I can’t remember which member has the great saying to treat each piece as being its own model, but right now I  guess I am starting my third model frame! Perhaps this will be a keeper!!    Images below including a comparison shot with my basswood test frame. Thanks as usual for reading!   Cheers,   Nigel.

Im making hard work out of this - but thorougly enjoying it

i am finding following the kits plans absolutely useless, most of the lines are tied off which means they served no purpose, tomorrow i will also label up the photo's

some progress on building the hull....

    Nils

this is no convertion to a viking longboat, but temporary protection to the prolonged bowpost until the upper bow bulwark is ready for attaching

my wife asks me this morning, if I`m sure the ship is not much too narrow...
All the overstanding frame hights have been cut off

between the second and the third rail (stern) I need enough place for attaching the decoration and the name, and homeport.
For providing adequate space for the portholes around the poop and perhaps some "eyebrows" over the portholes, I had to increase the hight of this (round the stern) plank accordingly as well as a good transition of the sheer in foreward direction

these are preliminary deck-stringers, for dry fit. There will be a pit right down to the lower deck, just behind the later forecastle bulwark

Hi Nils - I have found that fabric or sewing shops have a good selection of brass eyelets that work very well to simulate portholes.

    Many thanks Patrick and Mick,
and all the "like this" button activators...

    Patrick,
Thanks for your appreciation, I took her off the board this afternoon and was delighted of the work so far, a straight symetric and light hull like it should be. All the overstanding frame hights will be removed (cut off) and the upper deck stringers put on. The slot places are integrated alrteady when I cut the frames
I am including some pics of this milestone moment....

    Mick,
    Thanks for your words ,..
For plating I shall use self-adhesive aluminium foil stripes which will be ponced from the rear side to resemble the riveting
Before the plating comes on, there is still some filler application work to be done, and several semi-round rails must be attached to the ouside hull skin.

removed from the board and put on the upper end-cap plank 180° around the stern.

view into the aft ship hull. The outcuts for the deck stringers can be seen here

the "deck-beam" upper lnes are pre cut, so only the outer sides of the frames need to be cut. In this way the decks will have a positive curvature in width direction

bow post and vertical stern planking put on...

    Nils

the upper portion of the stern rounding will be horizontal planking
The upper propshaft housings still need to be planked, and the whole stern area requires fairing and blending for smooth transitions afterwards

the bow post (beech wood) where the plates are riveted to later on, gives the nostalgic touch to the rather sharp bow

its time to take the hull off the board now....

    Little update....

the last plank for the hull  was put on today, and the outside skin first faired with a viratory sander because due to the accumulated overload of the postworkers strike I still did`nt get that ordered spokeshave...

    Nils

next, is to put on the bow post, straight stem and around the bend to the keel in bow area. I think I`ll take it off the "slip-way" then and plank the upper stern bulwark area vertically

    Thanks Popeye,

is your belt sander  (a hand held sander) like for instance Proxon offers in their program....
or a stationary combination one ?

I also tried my hand held, electronic speed regulation triangle vibrition sander, it works well depending on grit size of the grinding patches. But that also creates tons of dust..., but at least it`s quite good to controll on the surface

    Nils

whilst the stb side is still being followed up.....

and the glue not dry yet.....

the port side has already integrated the bilge keel and is around the port bilge bend

as all planks are also glued edge to edge in longitudinal direction (single layer planking), it shows here, the advantage of building-in stringers, because  the pegs, pins and clamps can easily be fixed in the right places...., and they serve as fine Framework to glue on

    Thank-you for the replies

well after a good hours dusting her off - i have reminded my self of all the bits that need to be done/ to be finished or re worked - lol the gun-port lids are not on any of them - im sure they were part of the reason for her being put to one side

the three masts continue to be worked on - i have still to properly define which parts are black, or yellow -
