NMBROOK got a reaction from tarbrush in MORDAUNT 1681 by NMBROOK - Euromodel - 1:60 - Beyond Bashed
I have fully sanded the deck smooth. After this, the deck was wiped with an extremely diluted mix of Liver of sulpur gel,http://www.metalclay.co.uk/patinas/,thiswas to take the shine off the copper, rather than turn it black, which a stronger mix would have done.It has removed the shine and darkened the copper ever so slightly. So far two coats of poly have been applied and the deck has been rubbed down ready for the third.
Happy New Year everyone

NMBROOK reacted to rafine in Frigate Essex by Rafine - FINISHED - Model Shipways - Kitbashed
First of all, I wish all of you a very happy and healthy New Year. Secondly, thank you for the interest, encouragement and kind thoughts about Essex this past year.
Two weeks of family house guests have now left, but as at least some of you expected, I snuck in some modeling time.
The pendants, shrouds and stays on the lower fore mast are now done. Everything done the same as on the other masts. Now, on to the bowsprit and further work on the head.

NMBROOK reacted to DORIS in ROYAL CAROLINE 1749 by Doris - 1:40 - CARD
Dear friends,
first I would like to wish you happy New Year 2015 and have a great time, plenty of health and optimism.
Thank you very much for your kind words and all the comments, you wrote to me.
I am blessed to be here with you and appreciate your favour a lot. Tomorrow it is my first day at new work so now I feel a bit nervous, cause this will be completely different than my previous occupation.
Your support and friendship mean a lot for me and helps me being strong.
Thank you warmly.
During last days I finished topmasts and deadeyes on the tops. I used card and pale wood (ramin). know, the work goes slowly, but I try to make the model neatly and much realistic, than my previous ships, so it is necessary to spend some time studying plans and nautical literature.

Thanks Buck! I used straws from an old brush to get it in scale. CA glue it to the stick and then trim and it to shape. I did two tests before I managed to get it right.
And yes, my fingers where hairy afterward.
Here is a part of Eendracht by Willem Van de Velde showing two svablar and the look I tried to make:

I felt the need to post some pics to celebrate the completion of the gundeck 'treenailing'.The aft section still needs sanding smooth and I will then apply a coat of thinned poly to protect the deck during future work.A rough count up shows well in excess of 3000 fixings Some sanity has been retained thanks to the music of Vangelis and Hans Zimmer
Kind Regards

Great to see you back in the shipyard John. You could detail the model in sections but I would be tempted to build the frame as one in the jig, then split, then rejoin to fit the external planking.I have only seen a handful of models that are split and join back together. Most notable is Arthur Molle's Sovereign
http://gerard.delacroix.pagesperso-orange.fr/royal_souverain/R_Souverain01.htm
I have also seen footage of a model of Le Fleuron split at the waterline and the top raised up on two electric rams!!!! I have a feeling this was on a video of one of the Japanese 'Rope' exhibitions.

Thank you very much indeed Steve I know Ed Tosti mentioned it doesn't mark the timber, but I was still fraught with trepidation not only that, but the LOS is neuturalised by a wash of dilute Bicarbonate of soda.Neither affected the timber, however the water raised the grain which gets 'knocked' back when flatting the varnish.Obviously sanding the deck after treatment would remove the patina.
Kind Regards

Thanks Nigel. I'll go have a look then. I'm just very cautious about such things. Always have been and probably always will be. Hell, I even paid for the original Leisure Suit Larry game way back when it was pirated by everybody.
