    Build log part 29

Now starting with fitting out forecastle beneath and on top of that deck

Fitting the first two Posts that also take up the bowsprit counterplate

the gundeck is cut away, wide under the forecastle deck as well..., to allow view from above to lower decks

tried to gain standhight for the Crew here as well (as good as possible)

Access to the forecastle deck shall be over the hatch-opening on starboard deck side (per Stair, the deckbeam shall be cut away at that Position. The stair shall fit nicely in between the first two gun tackles

the two masterboards fitted in place

    view underneath...

    deck openings for gratings, stovechimney

the planking of the deck will be done later on

Build log part 30 to follow....

    and here before...

    and here after the change

Close ups are always risky, but I trust it`s OK to Show...

the combinattion of partially cut away portside planking and actual outside bulwark decor above.
That Stringer on portside just above the wales will have to take on the chainplate fastening bolts later on

Cheers Mike, sorry I missed your kind comment - thanks mate!

No real progress of sorts, but a few pics of the Snake's first voyage to the NE Join Clubs Ship Model Show (There are some great pics at the following link).  It was great to meet some folks face to face and see some really nice models and some in person from logs right here on MSW.  http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/4939-northeast-joint-clubs-ship-model-show-conference/page-2#entry191448

Sjors/Mobbsie/Pierre/Klaas - You should check out the pics of HMS Ardent, I think it was bashed from the Agamemnon kit but was heavily modified - it won best in show and was pretty impressive!

Hopefully with a bit of work in the garden done I can get back to a bit of modelling in near future.

MSW group photo, Chuck in front and me lurking in the back

Snake (very humbly) on display - the big boys are in the background

Chuck's stall, fantastic stuff that I will no doubt be using in the future, had to share a picture of his lamp kits

Just a small but nevertheless important update.I am currently working on the other side but doing a little multitasking   In my last timber delivery,I had ordered some 6x4mm pear strip to see how successful it would be to bend the deck beams as apposed to cutting them.As a mentioned before these will penetrate the sides of the inner hull 'shell' and in effect be solidly anchored at the ends.I made a simple jig up to clamp the thoroughly soaked Pear strip in(tip here, soak until the pear no longer wants to float).I deliberately made the jig for double the camber to allow for some springback. Not only this but it is better to overbend and straighten rather than underbend. The radius was calculated using the formula shown in the pic.I thought i would include this as to my knowledge it hasn't been posted before.I clamped two strips in the jig at the same time on top of one another,Any more and it would start to make too big a difference to the radius. The question of whether these beams would be scarphed in the middle is in abeyance and I have posted another thread regarding this.Even if these will be scarphed,I thought it necessary to put the radius in before tapering as the bending properties would not be consistent with a tampered section.

    Kind Regards

    Yards:

Feeling my way with my first yards, technique seemed to work well so will continue with others.

Used the PE end cap to mark out the size that the end of the yard needs to be reduced to

Used a small plane to roughly shape the yard being careful not to take too much off

Sanded the shaped yards, and then cut down the central section to be a square profile (close to 1mm max depth) and then built up square section using spare walnut planks.  (The instructions call for the central section to be filed into an octagonal shape, however its pretty obvious that its not possible to make an octagon 6mm across from a dowel of 6mm diameter, not quite sure what they were thinking)

Filed down the corners to give the appropriate octagonal section needed in the center.  I find that using a marker to colour the sides allows the shape to seen much more clearly to allow this to be done more precisely - otherwise its very difficult to see the shape.  Paint will cover all this up, think it will be good enough once fine tuned.

    Jeers:

Although topmasts are pretty much ready to go on, the jeers have been nagging at me.  These seem to be pretty awkward to get in, especially once the topmast shrouds are in place so I've decided to install these before the proceeding further.  Getting the right length required quite bit of trial and error.  As always, suggestions welcome.  For some reason photos came out particularly badly tonight, so apologies in advance.

Block double stopped and kept in place with few drops of GS-Hypo.

Loop added to provide correct 'length', the three stands then seized near the top of the block.

Loose ends trimmed, and additional seizing put on.  I did this in accordance with the Grenado AOTS diagram (i.e. unserved), although it seems that these were also commonly served.  Frankly I didn't have the patience to attempt that...but suspect that the method could work just the same.

Mocked up the installation to check again length is appropriate.  There is not much room for error here, and it took multiple attempts to get length correct.  Looks OK to me.

Jeers will be lashed to the mast cleat on opposite side, this again is just a temporary mock up to prove it works.

That is a good point Druxey, both Lennox and Mordaunt were built at Deptford which was experiencing some timber supply issues at the time, this is covered in Richard Ensor's book. This could well explain his decision to include some randomly placed scarphs.I think if I follow suit and include some, but not on every beam

I wanted to make 16 guns that are only 6 pounders for my next project.
They are very small, but here I try to show how I went about this.
Oh, you might turn up the sound for this.

They are not yet finished, need new barrels, etc.

Hey all, done some work on the masts.

I think I'm starting to get the way they are constructed. First reshaping and fitting them to see that I got them ok:

The mainmast and the bowsprit on the real ship was made from several parts and I wanted mine to look like they are too:

Some mild washes to try and get it to look realistic. I will do more work on their finish later on.

Thanks a lot, guys, for the comments, likes and the continuing encouragement. It's quite clear that without the experience I've gained from you and the forum I'd never even have attempted working with a wood lathe -- as you have seen I spent a long time trying to make it work just with the kit barrels rather than accepting that it was just too big.

I'm really glad you made the suggestion to use ebony, Nigel -- I now feel much more confident about using it in the future. It certainly was made easier by spending time on learning how to use the lathe with the pear and boxwood barrels.

Onwards! (Well, step by little step, anyway)

I have now fitted all the upper gunport cills. These have been faired off flush inside and out.The counter side timber has also been fitted, but the lower hull is still to shape at a later date. There is quite a bit of difference between kit and builders model in this area.Franklin states in his book that the stern balcony actually has a grated deck. The carvings below the balcony act as knees to support this deck and to a lesser extent the stern structure. This is not easily visible in pictures but after enlarging the NMM pics as much as possible it became clear how this construction worked.
This is a far as I am taking this side for now, work will commence on the port side. There a still some small round gunports to create for the poopdeck, but I am not confident to the actual finished level of this deck at the moment so they will be added a little later.

I agree with Demonburger, the problem being is the differences in what each builder may want out of a particular kit.It may be possible to do as marks out of ten for particular categories e.g.instructions,timber,fittings,plans,historical accuracy/actual existence etc but I do think it would be wrong to generalise.
