If you find the timber to be splintery or the blade goes where it wants, you can stick some automotive masking tape(you need the stickier stuff than the Tamiya tape)to the to face of what will become the margin plank. This allows the blade to follow the line rather than the woodgrain and also stops the timber from wanting to split when doing the curved sections

    Kind Regards

Just a small tip mate, just concentrate on the outside edge where it abuts the bulwark,do this for all the sections incorporating scarf joints if you desire. When you have all the sections in place, label with a pencil and remove.Turn the point the opposite way in a compass and set the gap at your desired width. Then use the compass to scribe the width of your margin planks All you have to do is cut close to the line and finally size with sandpaper. No special tools like oddleg dividers required.

    Eamonn,

Another trick you can try to get a clean edge is to spray or brush a clear (gloss or matte, either will work) over the Tamiya tape and the demarcation with the area you wish to paint. This clear barrier helps prevent the new color from seeping under the tape. A slight variation on what Nigel suggested.

    Thank you Nigel,

I am glad the guns worked out quite well for the scale size, allthough I learned now that the hoops (makes sense) will be scratching the decks, but that would be my individual note....
I thought about chemical blackening hoops and gunbarrels for many times, but I find the brass contrust to the carriages in cherry- stained color tells you they are not of resin or of plastic.

Christmas in April!!!     Wood has arrived from Jeff at Hobbymill.  Wonderful wood and it's perfectly dimensioned.  I'm plotting out the frame blanks and hope to start making sawdust later this evening.

Time to start getting this build back on the road.... err... building slip.  The wood isn't warped, the camera is having issues. I think it was the setting I choose.

    Nils,

Thanks so much for your response. I am, by the way, very familiar with your astonishing work. Your splint looks perfect.

I will try this, though my skills may preclude this option. Regarding the washer. It appears as though the Vasa did in fact have these. Note the photos, as well as the carriage reproduction from the Vaset Museum.

Jay, No I'm working on the Vasa as she was in 1628. Short existence as it was. Note the Vasa orthographic carriage views. I appreciate your input, very nice of you.

NMBROOK got a reaction from archjofo in Sovereign Of The Seas by NMBROOK - Scale 1/84 - based on the works of Van De Velde the elder
I have nearly finished all the treenailing on the starboard side.I decided to use 0.5mm copper for the mainwales. Now as a break I decided to start work on the beakhead bulkhead. In the deagostini partwork, this is almost identical to Sergals offering. As I am modifying this model to represent the Vandevelde artworks, I decided this was best scratchbuilt.I came up with a design that incorparates the uprights for the railings for strength,as the majority of the rigging is tied off to these railings.I made three limewood formers and notched these to take the boxwood uprights. This was then glued together on a sheet of glass to ensure flatness. The front face was skinned in two laminations of 0.8mm ply and then planked with black boxwood strips I have obtained from a marqeuetry supplier. After gluing braces into the forecastle area,I removed the majority of the original bulkhead. The planking at the forecastle was slimmed down to 1mm thick from the inside. To the inside of this I laminated some more 0.8mm ply. This strengthens this area and forms a base for the uprights at the sides of the forecastle.I then mortised the remains of the old bulkhead and epoxied in the corner uprights. At the moment all the uprights are left way overlength and the new bulkhead's sides will be trimmed flush to the hull when this is bonded in place.I am going to detail this bulkhead before I actually bond it in place.

Ok something in a way of an update. The infill has been faired although the final touches will be applied after fitting the false deck and bow/stern blocks. The deck stringers have been fitted. The two scrap pieces screwed down provide temporary clamping due to the sheer on these stringers.Next job is finishing the deck edge supports from amidships to bow and the bow/stern filler pieces. Not much more to add that the pics don't explain.

    Kind Regards

    Build log part 5

the Bohuslän has a very nice slim Stern, and the whole waterline appearance in birds view Looks like she is designed for Swift coastal travel

prop and rudder are well protected against unpurposed ground contacts in shallow waters

the handrails are from Mahagoni but laminated with thin aero-ply from below to avoid Splitting when shaping and Drilling them

the Little clinker planked lifeboats are models of their own

for the boats strappings I cut some stripes from black Roof-Skin plastic material I still had

the Integration of the three trims into the metal plating worked out quite well

Gothenburgs town badge-flag set at the bowpost, and rigging of the Forward mast and load Derrick under way

    Cheers Mobbsie!

To hide the rather slow progress, I'll post a few 'state of the build' pics.  Ratlines and futtock shrouds all done, although there are one or two ratlines that I may yet redo.  First picture falls into the 'warning by me take' category, I'd completely missed a double block on the mizzen mast which was rather painful to get on with all the shrouds in place.  Definitely try to get this one onto the mast before any shrouds.  I did have a pleasant experience though, after having somehow made the served length approx 10mm too long even after mocking it up, I couldn't face remaking it.  Found that carefully applying some GS Hypo glue around the served line at the appropriate point allowed it to be cut cleanly with no frayed ends!

I've also noticed that the tension in the main and preventer stay has been reduced, despite having stretched the line before installing.  Not sure whether its necessary to redo the heart lashings to tighten, only potential problem I can foresee will be when the braces get put on they may pull the stays unnaturally out of alignment, but this seems somewhat inevitable anyway so still pondering this one.

I do find it amusing they have Victory as a background on their homepage.I can understand why they haven't made a kit for her, simple reason is it is a saturated market. You have to come up with something different like Chris Watton did i.e. full interior. The kits they do produce sell simply because, apart from the high quality, they offer subjects a little different from the mainstream.Whilst the Euromodels ethos would be interesting applied to Victory, would it make good marketing sense?Just my thoughts.
