Hi Nigel  Yes, indeed, this sculpture is made by CNC machined of wood alpine pear. Files we do together with my wife.  To handle the relief I use the rotary coordinate in the 2D plane. However, for each plane we do personally control program. Four manufacture of Neptune we did 20 control program (arms legs and torso)

    Hi Eamonn
You will have to take a picture tomorrow with the bulwarks in place so we can have a looksee. My gut feeling is to ensure that they run true with the hull and adjust as necessary later at the tip.Because of the acute angles involved(just like your rabbet line )I think it is a big ask of caldercraft that this end detail would be perfect.I won't be online till later tomorrow.

    Latest Hot off the Press...

    - Have painted the areas that may be visible beneath the various gratings black.

    - Have glued the 2 Stern pieces (Fascia  & Transom) in place.

    - Have 'bulked-up' the top of Bulkhead No 3, it didn't meet up with the Bulwarks when I dry fitted them after overnight bending around the mug.
    - I also 'bulked-up- the bottom of Bulkhead No 2 where it came up short to the base of the false keel, it now has a more satisfactory 'run'

    - Sanded and generally tided up the last 2 above points above.

Next Bulletin soon... cue 'busy & important' music.. fade out.

    Hi Matti
I would be inclined to agree with you, studying your pictures of the original, there is insufficient evidence to even suggest whether they open in or out.Either way is possible, but either way is awkward due to the incline the hinges would be on.If they did open inward there would necessarily anything visible other than possible through bolting of the hinge plate from the inside.

    Newsflash....

    - Bulkheads and Filler Blocks are now all bevelled/shaped .
    - Stern Counter Frames are gluing as we speak.
    - False Deck has been dry fitted & sanded flush with the edges of the bulwarks.
    - Stern Counter & Stern Facia removed from their 'matrix' and sanded, I removed the Stern Counter early to help the 4 X Counter Frames in line as they glued.
    - Bulwarks are soaking in water prior to being gently shaped around a 'straight sided' mug. Thanks Jim for that tip, see his Ballahoo build to see what I mean  at 'HMS Ballahoo by jim_smits'.

Here are a few photos of the Shaped Bulkheads and Blocks, compere them to the shots from yesterday above to see the difference.

    Thanks for checking in

Great work buddy!!The prow area is coming together very nicely indeed.May I suggest some thin black card for your door hinges as anything thicker is going to spoil the magnificent scale fidelity you have attained throughout this build.

I think the second picture really conveys the amount of detail you have added and still have to add with all the photoetch. She certainly is far removed from the old 1/600 airfix kits I built as a boy!

    Hi Michael
Whole heartedly agree with your decision  to fit all the swivel guns.Purely down to aesthetics and symmetry,To anyone not in the know,it would appear wrong plus fitting them depicts the ship as designed and the design was for four guns.My only suggestion would be to leave the deadeyes unrigged. That way you can make a jig using a piece of scrap and some pins to hold the deadeyes in line and the same distance apart whilst you rig the shrouds. Then rig the deadeyes. This would keep the deadeye spacings consistant.Do you plan on pinning the chainplates when setting the shrouds?I ask because that way ensures everything lines through, positioning them to the drawings can be a little hit and miss.
    Kind Regards Nigel

Photo Update to go with Last Post above..

Got the last of the Filler Blocks in place, some were roughly bevelled/shaped prior to being glued in place.
They will be properly shaped together with the Bulk Heads as soon as the glue has set on the last of the Blocks.

Tip of the Day, If using the same style of 'Keel Clamps' as I have (2 pair of 90 degree angle pieces, screwed to the build board) be sure to leave them 'loose-ish' before putting the Filler Blocks in place, as you may end up with the devils own job of getting your nice precious build free of them other wise! (on account of not being able to unscrew them afterwards) This almost happened to me but I spotted the issue in time! Phew
2nd Tip of the Day.. and this one is a doosey!!! Check your Measuring Devices.. Why you might ask? Well in my job I have spotted rather substantial differences between Rulers, 5mm difference between 2 separate 30cm rulers when laid together! So if you ever wonder how a 'twice or three times' checked measurement ends up wrong, then do please check your measuring devices (particularly if you use more than one measurer) Hope that makes sense..

Having had a thorough read through your log Len,I have to say fantastic work. The shades of colours you have used echo the colours brilliantly of some of the builder's models I have seen of the period.Simply fabulous!

Try the Birchwood Casey. I like it so far, although I haven't tried it on any large surfaces yet.

    Hi Mangaroca
My apologies, been offline the last day or two.Yes the keel needs to be flat to avoid later hassles.Wetting and then applying weights on a flat surface usually sorts this out.Leave for a few days to ensure the timber is fully dry.If this fails to work, rewet the timber and flatten it with a hot iron on a flat surface by repeatedly ironing it both sides until the heat dries the ply out.
I am going with pear and ebony because I wish to build this ship in the 'Russian palace' style.I feel this ship particularly lends itself to this style.
My I suggest you start a build log,you will find there will be no shortage of help and advice should you need it.
    Kind Regards Nigel

Latest Update Hot off the Press..

Bulkhead Fillers are almost done, just have the Aft most pair to do tomorrow (those between No 10 & 11 B/Heads, they will need to be tapered to fit No 11 as it slopes backwards)
They have really made the whole structure rigid! I feel now that I can bevel away happily without having to pick bits of bulkhead up from the floor, ah jeez! there are those 'famous last words again..'

Will hopefully have some photos tomorrow as it is too dark here at present.

I have to agree with Mark, kit manufacturers can be creative with the truth when it comes to wood.Even though it is classed as an endangered species does not mean it is completely unavailable, just means DIY stores can't sell it by the ton. They start selling a substitute, pine, mmmmmm

Those "ramin" strips in the kits may or may not be true ramin.  Some of the kit makers have used a wood different from what they call it.
