Hi Tony,I totally agree with Paul,You need RPM to get a good finish on wood especially running small cutters. There is good reason why woodworking routers run up to 30,000 RPM and this is using cutters up to 25mm in diameter.
Incidentally fitting the high speed kit to the Sherline mill will void the warranty as I understand it.

    Kind Regards

This may be a different kit Tony,it was Mark Taylor that told me the kit he was using voided the warranty. He may be able to shed a little light on this

My personal opinion is that there isn't a one size fits all mill. For really small detail work with small cutters the MF70 is ideal. For larger work and metals,I would go for the Sherline or a larger Proxxon.I have seen the small yellow mill available from machine mart in the flesh and it looks like a decent bit of kit for the money if you want something.larger and slower  Might be worth investigating.

That's interesting, Nigel. I was looking at the Sieg mills in Arc Eurotrade on line, but I now see that Machine Mart is in Edmonton, which is quite close to me. So I may well go and have a look.

I don't really intend to work with metal, but I've learnt from many other comments that once you enter this dark world of grown up toys you are easily sucked in deeper.

Hmmm... I guess any Stuart 6th Rate done large would be super.

Over the years, Model Shipwright has been flogging us mercilessly with many terrific,
but difficult to build, gilded beauties -- produced by master model makers.

And I imagine, but do not know, that they had good plans from English sources.

HMY Fubbs is also in the back of my mind now, but I have seen so many versions of it modeled,
that I wonder if it isn't the perfect example of the problem you have with plans.

In any event, I am looking forward to the Staten Yacht and the flogging to end --
my chance to build a really great 17th century model!

Dunno how I missed this Daniel   The 3d render of the model looks superb    Top marks for going with Pear for the planking       I do hear where Boyd is coming from though.Whilst your bulkhead system guarantees an accurate framework, there are the variables of fairing and sanding of the first ply layer.Don't get me wrong,I REALLY like the idea of the prespilled Pear planks,I hope it works out.
One thing,if I may suggest. What I found when skinning the upper half of Nuestra Senora is that some marks on the bulkheads for where the joins of the ply patterns fall would make things more foolproof. If possible, could these be laser etched on the bulkheads during the cutting process?

A little progress - I figured it was time to cut out the lower 2 rows of gunports. I have some wood squares on sticks made up of various sizes to mark out the ports.

After marking out the ports I drilled a number of holes around inside the lines, cut out the center with a small keyhole saw,& filed them out to size. The lower row are 14mm & the middle row are 13mm.

After that I thought it would be a good time also to cut the openings for the side entries. I ran into one small problem - apparently the gunports are a couple of mm too far forward. The side entries should be almost directly above the gunport at bulkhead 1 amidships,so what I did was after marking the bottom of the entry to be level with the second gun deck I simply cut part of the bulkhead out where it interfered. So not really a problem - just a little more work. I don`t know where I was off when marking the gunports because I triple checked the positions before cutting them out .Maybe the positions on the plans were slightly off.

    Thanks Guys,
Nigel-Yes, I plan to make also copper tiles.
Ed Saur, Ulises Victoria-At this moment it is hard to write what models will be next, it also depend on quality of sources (mainly quality of plans), but I would like to do De Zeven provinzien after the Santisima as I wrote earlier. But parallel to this big kits I everytime work also on some smaller projects (as Dutch statenyacht for example).

    good morning everyone,

eventually got a few outside shots,
things are settling down having a new pup in the house, and a change of man cave, done lots on this build recently, and learning lots towards the next big ship build, around Easter time, Possibly the Trumpeter 1/200 HMS Nelson
