Well my Nuestra Senora has landed a mere six days after Daniel dispatched it !!!!!!!!!!.Firstly I would like to mention how well packaged the kit was.The kit box was packed inside a larger box and surrounded by those clear plastic 'pillows' that are full of air.The kit box was completely unmarked from it's little 'trip'.

My first reaction was just how heavy the box is for it's size and upon opening it is full to the brim!!I have taken a couple of pics, but as yet haven't the time to start examining the contents, unfortunately I have just got up and have to set off shortly for a twelve hour nightshift However looking inside, although I am not a big fan of walnut, the wood in the box has to be the best I have seen in thirty years of building wooden models.

I am now deciding as to whether to do a 'review' or start a log and show all the information as to the contents there.Everything both modelling wise and non essential domestic items is currently being packed up in anticipation of our house move, but I cannot see it being too long after settling in that I start making saw dust.

I've now done the upper belt of the lower planking on the starboard side. All of the same procedures were used as on the port side. As on the port side , the planking is only rough sanded at this point.  Usually the second version of any work goes faster and easier, but for whatever reason that was not the case here.

In any event, it's time to face up to doing the square tuck stern. Although Chuck has made it look easy on his model, it just doesn't look easy at all when I look at the necessary work ahead of me. We shall see.

    Thank you Denis,

I`m just working on the forecastle anchor / chain tubes (6 mm brass tubes), they will have to be faired and equipped wih flanges to sides and deck afterwards, but have to be dry fitted now in case some adjustments have to be made inside the ship.
The forecastle deck comprises 3 shaped parts....
The scetch (partial section) shows the arrangement of the other decks, at least how I intend to do them

added more year 1900 nostalgic (more straight) bow and sternpost (double-ender boats), and dd the lapstrake planking by means of self adhesive metal foil stripes

    Build log part 18

    Part 1 of 2

the long promenade deck has to be roughly fitted, and to be supported with I-beams in the areas of the aft waist (one deck below). Although it`s a later building sequence I`ve been experimenting with the making of bollards, scoop bowls for the vents (there are so many different sizes !)
And also the making of the small 60 mm long lifeboats....., here is a first trial in clinkered version, if it works out OK, that would be my master lifeboat-plug for doing the whole batch in resin cast afterwards, other solutions pending

    a Little update...

    Build log part 17

the first Saloon and cabin wall section I start with is in the aft waist area, one deck lower. This has to be done now because the Long Promenade deck (when put on) will not allow Access to this part afterwards.
The metal sections of the superstructure will also be plated. The procedure is to produce a smooth wooden surface, and plate with ponced resembled "riveted"  metal surface.
Then cut free the positions in the foil where the port holes are to be drilled. Dry fit the brass handrails, then take off the handrails, primer the cabin walls, paint the surface, let dry, and then insert the "preglassed" portholes and the handrails again. Secure the handrail stanchions at the inner side of the walls with a drop of CA

    Nils

a clean circular cut through the foil and a good centering in the wood enables the hole drilling in best possible way

this part takes 30 portholes and six doors

here the first handrail piece is dry-fitted

this is a liquid quick drying filler / primer that gives a wonderful surface to the white dull silk finish paint
(a Gunze / Sangyo, Japanese product)

this is the bulkhead for the step to the poopdeck, primered and painted

    dry fit on the ship.....

four srews will later help hold this section securely in place

    Hello Paul,

for the KWdG porthole arrangement I have here this pic where she is in the drydock. The portholes are actually flush with the hull, no flange,  the "eyebrows standing out, to lead rain- and splashwater around the porthole.

I made a little mock up in order to see how the critical porthole section just beneath the forecastle deck shall work out, leaving a minimal space just above the porthole for the eyebrow placement ( second hole from the right, with brass insert and "glassing")

    a little update.....

now need to plank and mount the forecastle deck and the long promenade deck, before the most upper hull rails are mounted to the sides. Before this the metal plating can not start

Am also making thoughts of the stern decoration and ornaments, and been gathering what I feel may suit this job....
Also am meantime thinking of how to do the 3 different types of lifeboats in repeatable way of production (probably resin cast from prototypes and master moulds)

    Nils

front waist deck is permanently glued on, small centering hole for frontmast is set and bulkhead for step to promenade deck is dry fitted

traffic corridor port to stb on aft waist, deckstripes permanently fitted, raw bulkhead piece for step to poop deck dry fitted and inner bulwarks painted white and mahagoni handrails put on

the handscetch helps to get overview of the elevation dimensions ( slight changes to suit the requirements pending...)

these hull rails go on when the forecastle. and promenade deck are planked and put on. Before that the metal-plating of the hull can not start

some of the decoration and ornaments intended to use, especially for the stern

the window frames have been sprayed with dull clear varnish in order to keep the brass shiny.
the 4 doors for under the forecastle deck (with each two locking levers) will also be painted

    The rudder:

One I'd made my mind up to try to reflect an appropriate taper on the sternpost, I realized I didn't really know how it would be shaped, so I decided to make up a new rudder as that is clearly illustrated in the AOTS book, thinking I could then use those dimensions to determine the taper on the sternpost.

Bottom line, this was slow going as I don't have a huge assortment of power tools, but I had a lot of fun doing it!  5mm sheets of box were cut into approx. 9mm wide sections to allow final shaping and laminated together.  I kept the front and back sections until the last moment so in the event of a catastrophic error I'd have less rework.    I completely forgot to take progress pictures, but hopefully its relatively obvious.  After studying many diagrams and plans, I tweaked the location of the pintle cut outs to match the AOTS dimensions, the biggest change was the uppermost one, which I raised a fair bit.

Overall, very happy with the result compared to supplied part, I'm sure some final fettling will be needed before finally fitting.

Should also add a public service announcement, did need to buy a small amount of wood from Jason at Crown Timberyard, - easy online ordering, lovely boxwood, and reached my house approx. 7 days from ordering - great service.

The difference in dimensions can be seem compared to kit supplied rudder

The rudder head now looks much more in scale within the counter rudder hole.  Shots from below show how much of a 'build-up' will be needed to match the rudder dimensions.

Couldn't help myself. Had a quick look, no more the 5 or 10 minutes. Outstanding Daniel! Like Nigel stated the wood is excellent quality, true and square,no flaking and a constant colour. Wanted to see what the laser carving details were like, very fine and sharpe. Not yet see deck, but think that the laser etching will make effective caulking. Also want to see gratings, thought I might have to replace these again they are excellent. Got to put it away now and make a living! My intention are to buy a decent bottle of wine and have a good examination Friday evening. Regards Ken

    Thank you Grant and Bob
I tried the paint route, didn't look right,so that idea aborted The issue is the massive difference in colour between the boxwood I use for carving and the box used for general construction and planking.
This is further complicated by the fact I am not prepared to carve every detail on the model, kit castings will be used where appropriate.
The plan is that everything was always going to be box and ebony,no other colours anywhere.I am prepared to make one exception and that is the decoration,so now I have tried my 'get out of jail card'.
The pic is of the carving with gilding paste applied. This stuff buffs up to a high sheen, does not obscure detail and does not have the metallic flakes prominent like paint.
This does present another problem in that you cannot cover it with Poly, even if you spray it on,it turns milky. This would mean doweling the carvings and fitting all the ornamentation when the hull and decks are complete and fitted out.
The pic really doesn't do it justice. The combination of iphone camera and a dark and dingy wet day don't help.

    Kind Regards

After shaping the bottom figure,I decided to relieve the back of the carving. This lended to a more 3d appearance allowing me to open up the area between the legs.

Since taking these pics, the carving has been separated from the stock and has had a thin coat of yellow ochre acrylic. The reasoning behind this is that the wood I use for carving is far too yellow for this model. The carving would not blend with other boxwood the hull is planked with. I hope that after applying a coat of poly it will blend better. If not,it is small enough to strip and try again to find a suitable method. If I get this right,it means I can use the cast wreaths around the gunports. These are good quality from a detail point of view and a better alternative to carving 22 identical ones!!

    Kind Regards

    Nigel
