Landrotten Highlander reacted to bolin in Medieval longship by bolin - FINISHED - 1:30 - based on reconstruction Helga Holm
    Thanks Steven,

My own experience from rowing the reconstruction for a fair number of hours is that the length of the oars on different position has no effect. We have a rather wide variety of oars with different length and weight. It's much more important on how close to the side you sit, how strong and tall you are, what technique you have etc.

It's not much left of the riveting now. Soon I can proceed with other, much more fun, stuff.

    Hi All,

    This time another small update.
I've managed to complete all side tackles blocks.

Next step - pendants and rig them using above blocks to channels eyebolts.

    Cheers,
    Matt

Are you certain you used the right gears?
When I compare all pictures it appears to me you have the Mercury gears working fine, but there is a discrepancy with the Venus gear - in the instructions the gear-pair on the Venus stage appear to be of similar size, while yours appear to be very different.

Before the lockdown I worked with a group of people on the Hachette Victory, and in that project one had to be very careful, as very often the wood for two or 3 teps further would be delivered with one issue.  For instance, you were provided with kit parts in issue G, but when carfully looking at the instructions you need part of the wood provided with G, but also some provided with D and some wood would be left for a step discussed in issue P.

Did I confuse you?  So were we at first...

Finished railing of the poop deck..

Drilled all holes for pins in the side railing..

Can I have a question about Ab Hoving?
I'm looking for information on other ties that are not on the plan. Can I use the inner railing as on other models?

Or Pin Rail on the inside? What is historically more faithful? Thank you.

I've made a bit more progress with the side windows done, and wasn't that a fiddly job!
I've also fitted the side rubbing strakes, I was originally going to paint them black but decided against it reasoning that black would be somewhat overpowering and the hull will be pretty heavily decorated so too much detail I think.

The downside of not painting the strakes is I had screw clamp holes to fill and try and hide. I used a hole punch to cut bungs from scrap walnut which I have glued into the holes and after a good sand they don't look bad. We'll see once I get some varnish on.

Thanks all! been on a rampage these past few days on Bismarck... got the flak guns installed, railings up on level 2 of the superstructure and marathoned 6 more tiny Veteran Models AA guns. Damn those things are a nightmare. Also got some Veteran Models ammo boxes cleaned up, painted and ready to go.

In the meantime I have created the preconditions for setting the topmast shrouds.
I made the necessary ropes myself.

Hello and many thanks for your likes and comments

The carpenters cut a lot of wood the last days. At least I'm not sure where to start, but I tend to make first the drift rails and the fife rails only at the poop deck. After they are installed I could better fit in the scrolls, or hansing pieces.

Landrotten Highlander reacted to DORIS in HMS ROYAL KATHERINE 1664 by Doris - 1/55 - CARD
    Dear colleagues and friends,

Thank you all very much for your comments, kind words and support. It means a lot to me and I am pleased that you like the Royal Katherine model in my rendition.
It was a really great challenge when I decided four years ago whether to go for it or not, but despite many difficulties during the building, I do not regret this decision. At the same time, I fulfilled another modeling dream, which I was able to share with you and almost to the end with my husband George. The realisation of this project brought me not only the joy of the hobby itself, but also learning and possibility of expanding the knowledge horizons about real ships, their construction and history.
My main intention was to strive for the most realistic model reconstruction of the real appearance of the Royal Katherine and to point out the various shortcomings and inaccuracies that we often encounter in documents and plans of sailboat models. In addition, I tried to create my model without the use of special tools and from the most available materials as an example of the fact that even a very modest background is not an obstacle to creating a nice and quality model, which makes this hobby available to almost everyone.

None of us can know what the future will bring, but I definitely do not want to give up my hobbies and when I find enthusiasm for a new and interesting project again, I will share it with you.

Kind regards and all the best,

    Doris

    Hi All,

    Another small update.

    Ropes, Blocks & Rock'n'Roll   😆

I've started with bowsprit. It's just easier to do it when is not attached due to quite few blocks as you can see... rather than moving whole model and for sure damaging something

I'm just missing few stoppers for stropped blocks, which were protection for sliding on the bowsprit and can stay at the same time whole time.

Lower part of main mast also received deadeye which is a part of mizzenmast shroud.

Double block on the flagstaff, which is part of mizzen sheet.

All gun tackles and breeching ropes done... so ship is ready for battle

    Cheers,
    Matt

Time to bring this log up to date and maybe call it "proof of life" during the virus.   After being unhappy with the first strakes and ripping them off, I did them again... and again.   Finally happy.  It's just 6 rows but methinks I'll be picking up some speed on the rest.   I still need to give it some more sanding and a bit of filling and also finish opening the gunports to upper sills.  The starboard side has been trimmed and as I said, needs more sanding.  The port side is only planked at this point.  Overall, I'm feeling pretty good about it.  Much of my memory has returned since the stroke and that helps in sorting things out.   In the background is the planking wood waiting for me to lay into place.

    Here's photos....

Mark, which yellow color did you mean? That below the wales? That is the final color.

Now I will first finish the outside of the hull, with all that is possible except the stern. Inside the hull I have build all I could do. But as you know, you could't install the cannons before you have the outside ready. Then when the hull is from the outside ready, I go on and build the rest of the inside and with it also the stern.

Marc, that was't my idea. Here some pictures from the Centurion. At the warship I also had the opportunity to see at Chatham it is the same. Only the pictures I made are not so good.
