I saw that someone else ran into the same problem that I did with a piece of the bulkhead breaking off while trying to put on the false deck. I tried gluing it back on but there's too much stress and it kept breaking off.
What I did was to glue first then drill a pin size hole through the broken piece at and angle into the main part of the bulkhead. I then drove a needle about an inch into it then cut and ground it off. Good and strong now.

    Hi

I would recommend the Ship to Stern book that Mayohoo has listed. Also found a number of tutorials and recommendations on this website. There was one in particular by Dan Vlads but have tried to relocate but could not find. Found this one really useful.

I always get nervous about starting as I don't want to get anything wrong. To be honest I always do get stuff wrong and don't know why I agonised about it in the first place. I am far off achieving the quality of most of the other builders on this site but have found part of the fun is getting around my own self inflicted issues. Each build I am getting better but only through the mistakes I have previous builds so would recommend starting and rolling with it. After all that is what putty, sandpaper and the second planking are for.

Hi  sorry no photos of the first planking or the progress of the second planking, as I did not intend to do a log at this time.
The hull had 3 coats of sanding sealer and sanded down with 3200 grit, then one coat of stain when dry ( 24 hours )  3 coats of satin varnish ( it my look shiny but when it cures it will look like satin  it takes about 72 hours ).

if I were you I would avoid this kit like the PLAGUE! it is a pirated kit from a disreputable company & you would not be allowed to post a build log etc. here! Go for a reputable USA or European manufacturer. All the best, geoff

Thanks for all your input on the HMS surprise kit. I'm glad I asked. I will never deal with disreputable companies' that pirate. I feel like a knuckle head for not knowing about these practices. Thanks for the warning and I've noted the list of companies to look out for. Glad I trusted my instincts.

I probably should have ditched the metal frames, too.. But I didn't know enough..  So:

    1) I prepositioned the frames using the guide notches in the deck...

    2) assembled the guns/carriages but didn't glue the barrels in place

    3) used the gun/carriage assemblies (port and strbd) to align and secure the frames at the right height.

    4) Glued the carriages in place..

    5)  removed the barrels and set aside  until later

    6) Finished 1st planking the hull such that the planking fit in with the gun port frames and then sanded everything smooth and flush...

    7) Installed the weather decking and the gunwales

    8) did the second planking so that the gun port doors would fit flush into the hull when closed...

    9) when the entire model was finished and painted     I used a tweezer  to insert the gun barrels onto  their carriages through the open port.. and used CYA to fix them in place  ( one drop on each pivot works great)

    10) then the port doors were attached..

    11) Then came the rigging, being VERY  careful not to dislodge a gun barrel..

Note: an assembled gun/carriage will not fit through the port  ..

Might not have been the simplest approach  ... but it worked...

The first plank layer has now been smoothed and the stern section below the windows as been added.

Now to shape and fit the stern post, keel and cutwater before starting on the top plank layer.

    Cheers,

    Time for an update.

The hull under planking layer is now complete and ready for sanding to achieve the final shape before fixing the top plank layer.

While I was doing the planking I also thickened up the hull sides and the bulwarks so that the gun ports and other penetrations will be the right depth. I do not intend cutting the gun ports etc until all planking is complete.

I have also fitted the deck planking to the main deck and will now start adding the deck furniture on this level. The plank joints and trenails will be added when the holes for the hatches etc have been established.

The single penetration through the main deck is for the forward companionway as this is the only hatch that can be seen into. I have already planked the deck at the lower level.

I think that the hull shape looks OK. As I was shaping the hull I came to realize how the hull shape of a frigate is different to the hull shape of a transport based ship like the Bounty. The frigate is much narrower and the resulting tendency to roll must have made them wicked to inhabit in a cross sea. Also the main deck width doesn't vary much in the ship's length and is quite wide at the stern, presumably to work best as a gun platform.

    Cheers,

    David.

While you are building HMS Surprise, you will be allowed to talk like Preserved Killick.

    Example:

Wife: "Honey, dinners ready! Put down your little boat."

You: "Which I'm coming, ain't I? Bleedin' wife sez do this, do that, poor old Killick ... I'll trade her in for a new wench at the horse fair, see if I don't ... Er ... Nothing ... Coming Dear."

I built the Mamoli Surprise as far as the gun deck and have stopped at that point.  I'm trying to figure out how to rig guns to metal gun port frames.  Really disappointed with this kit so I ordered the AL Surprise from Amazon and currently in the process of building the frame.  Much  happier.  It may sound silly but you can eliminate a lot of the confusion on the wood issue if you count the pieces and then label them yourself.  It isn't foolproof but it will help,

Below is the carving process to remove the bulwarks. I mainly did this using basic woodcarving tools (though tried the dremel a bit but didn't really need it). The hull still needs a little work by the fore and quarter deck areas. Should I use a small saw to make them even?

You can see the offset between the lines and numbers with these pics which I am going to modify by pen and cut to the shape of the plans.  Am I holding them to the plans correctly? I am wondering if they need to be exact with the outer or inner lines of the -uh "rabbet"?

Also I attempted a few times to photocopy the plans and for some reason they either came out slightly too small or too big and I know they need to be perfect to avoid mistakes.  If I cut up the original plans is having a copy slightly off size to work from going to cause me problems in the long run? Or maybe should I just contact ME and order a second set?

For general information, "The Construction and Fitting of the English Man of War 1650-1850" by Goodwin is excellent. For model shipNelson era detail, "The Anatomy of Nelson's Ships" by Longridge is excellent. For general modeling, "Ship Modeling from Stem to Stern" by Roth is very good. "Historic Ship Models" by Mondfeld was also pretty good.

Nice fix, think Bindy ran into the same issue. I took to mine with a hammer which was not the smartest thing to do but got away with it this time. Looking forward to seeing your progress as at this rate you will over take my build.

    Hi,

Looks like great stuff, I just bought this model from the UK folks and hope to have it in a week or so. This will be my third build and am following yours closely. Friggin things take me years but I realy enjoy the journey. I want to try to bash the kit to make it more realistic as you have done so I will be following you, Bindy, and cptn71 for tips. Not sure about posting my own build as I think they are amazing many folks here may find faults. I just finished the HMS Snake and did the USCG Falcon a couple of years back. Your build looks great, did you use graphite between the deck planks? Please let me know.

    Thanks for your help,

    Dave

Hey Waitoa. The hole for the foremast was off alittle but I planked over it and will file it out to align right. 1 of my bulk heads is off too so I'm gonna have to shave 1 side and add to the other. I'm learning not to trust the factory so much. Like you, I tend to plunge ahead and clean up later. I guess we're sorta kindred spirits in that department. Thanks for being my "point man" and letting me follow your lead.

Thanks Mayohoo, That looks great. I wished I had researched more, as I have already started the the deck at the 80 mm per the plans around 8 ft.( or is it 10)  Kinda metric stupid, bein American n all.
I did get it centered perfectly though, as it laid out exactly to the edges. This is the course I have done so far.

. I need to sqaure off my ends better for the upper deck. I can dress these up with a knife later.
