maltbyguy got a reaction from WackoWolf in Wasa by maltbyguy - Billings / Corel
Hi all
I thought I had better post an update on progress
when I last was on I had just started on some of the deck furniture doors and ladders etc.
These are all now made fitted and painted so I have made a start with the planking so far it has been quite straight forward with no really nasty bends that a 10 minute soak in hot water won't cure
I have now realised that there needs to be a method of supporting the dummy cannons so work has stopped and my thinking cap has been dug out again
I have been looking at the excellent build logs thanks guys for all your help and pictures I will post more pictures when I have sorted the cannon problem out

Hi Matti I am half way through the planking of my Vasa and have realised that I have no idea where or how I am going to fit the gunports or dummy cannons.
My instructions are so vague that they are not mentioned can you help me please ?

Hi here we go again
I saw this Billings kit on E bay at what I thought was a very reasonable price but unfortunately it was an older kit with no fittings
:o
After an internet search nothing seemed to be available to buy so I thought I had bought some expensive firewood or paint stirrers
On a whim I E mailed the seller to see if he had any bits he might have tucked away , he replied that he had a full Coral fittings kit that he would send me for free :)
So the mongrel has started
I didn't like the printed deck so I used some 1/16 ply as a false deck and then planked with Tanganika (I think) using Nigel's (NMBROOK) method of using black tissue paper to simulate caulking
pace is a bit slow as time is at a premium at the moment
any comments from any of the other Wasa builders here would be appreciated

I decided to paint inner bulwarks probably not strictly correct but as I have said before I am no a "rivet counter" I make my models for the enjoyment of the hobby and to make something that is pleasing to look at
Masts were tapered on my Proxxon lathe I like their products this small lathe is ideal for mast and spar making
Its amazing how much better a model looks with masts fitted even if its a temp dry fit

1st planking and 2nd planking both finished but I didn't read the instructions correctly so planked all of the hull in walnut the top 4 planks should have been in the lighter colour
Deck and inner bulwarks have all been planked in the lighter timber I am not sure what it is but it seems impossible to sand it clean so I decided to leave it slightly dirty and say it adds character to the deck

Hi all I am still trying to work out my next major project I still want to build a POF model rather than the usual POB kits that I buy. I was browsing through E bay and found a part built Swift kit and thought it would make a good quick filer I put a £50 bid in it and won it for £45 !! bargain
The kit arrived safely but the previous builder had made a bit of a mess the main bulkhead was bent the mast supports were in the wrong place but nothing ventured nothing gained so I broke the backbone in two added more supports and glued back together
Next job was the deck this has quite a camber to it so loads of string and clamping methods were needed to get it to sit on the bulkheads correctly
The 1st planking was so poor in quality I think it was just pine that it broke at the slightest bend so that made some nice paint stirrers ! and I used some pieces of walnut I had in stock I know it seems a shame to use it and then cover it up but when needs must

Hi all I have been trying this method on my current build of Vassa (yes a log will follow soon) and I have found that tissue paper has a sort of bias if you glue ascoss it the tissue paper will wrinkle along the bias or grain it stays nice and flat
Is it just my paper or has anyone else found this ?

thanks for the tutorial I will be trying it on my next build
just one point as a yorkshireman that seems a waste of tissue leaving such a large gap between planks
(this will be lost on most members !)

Hi I am enjoying your build great work
Did you use the billings supplied deck or just plank with timber ? Did you double plank or just stain the 1st planking ?
I am just starting my build any ideas would be appreciated
