Good to hear your holiday was relaxing, nice work Dave. The swiss pear and maple look good together

After a nice, relaxing vacation, I'm back working in "Independence".  I made the new main mast and foremast out   of swiss pear, tapered them and squared the tops where the doublings are.  The topmasts are made of maple.  The bowsprit is pear and the jib boom is maple also.  Since I plan to dye the masts black between the doublings, the cheeks, trestletrees, crosstrees and bolsters will all be pear, also.  I placed a sailor on the quarterdeck to give a sense of scale.

I decided to make my masts and sprit out of swiss pear.  They need to be 5/16" in diameter at the base, and tapered.  Obviously there is no commercial source so I'll make my own.  The first step is to drill a 21/64" hole in some mild steel.  Then I cut out mast blanks on the table saw a hair larger that the hole.  I sharpened the tip of the blanks, then chucked them into my 1/2" electric drill.  Using the steel as a drawplate, I pushed the spinning wood through the hole.  The resulting dowels were a bit rough, bu I have at least 1/64 to play with and they clean up easily.  Once they're at 5/16", I'll taper them.  Here's a photo of the blanks and the resulting unsanded dowels.  I also linked to a You Tube video showing the technique.

I've installed the bulkheads and the sternpost.  Some of the bulkheads were very snug and I had to do some sanding to get them to fit properly.  They went together quite nicely.

    Running rigging is now done.
New candidate for repetitive mindless job of the month: making dozens of rope coils for the belay point (last picture).
The rest are views of the essentially complete Morgan with coils for the spider bands and mainmast pinrail yet to be placed. I was hoping to be completely done (except the 7 whaleboats) before I leave the country for a week, but the coils took longer than expected and I won't have time to do the cutting-in stage and the paint touch ups here and there that it needs.
Only a day or two work remaining.

I haven't posted progress because the foremast was just duplication of the mainmast yards, and I also took a week or so away to recharge. Having said that, I must be learning something from this process since the foremast went easier (altho the belay points were also more accessible, which helped.
Certainly doing the Morgan for my first truly rigged ship turned out to be a real challenge. Some bits don't bear real close inspection, some lines had to be spiced, etc. etc.
At any rate, the running rigging is now done except for the braces and placing rope coils. I expect that to take me a week or perhaps two. Then the Morgan goes into it's case in the living room while I build the whaleboats. Unless I add the cutting stage first.

So here it is.  The final pictures of my Mare Nostrum.  I finished tonight.  However, there is one addition I want to make but the part hasn't come in yet so I won't close off the build quite yet.  But for the most part, it's finished. It's not as detailed as it should have been but to me it's a good model.  There were some discrepancies between the plans and the picture on the box.  But I did what I thought was correct.  The bench is now empty, waiting for the next build.

Some careful treading on the funnel. Had a hard time getting those brass thready thingies on ...
Before with some more bling bling on the forward tower, and two additional gun directors (they had some gun directors and rangefinders installed on these ships!!)

This is what I could find:

on a good day the turret recieved information from the director on the foretop. This used radar to get precise range information and had a stereoscopic system as backup.
If the turret stopped receiving information from the fire control computer the turret would switch to local control. This was entirely stereoscopic, and thats why there are "wings" on the back part of the turret, this houses the lenses for the rangefinder within the turret.

A little more work on the main guns, the blast bags completed and painted, the gun tubs added and the first wash applied to bring out detail before weathering.

I expect the trusses hold the bottom of the blast bags and the wings are range finders.

Moving on with the mains guns whilst the hull sets, after the primer coat, some pre shading then filling it in and overspraying.

    Then a lighter highlight

Then masking to bring up sharp edges with 50/50 mix of light grey and white

Finally a grey filter added to tone it down.

next will be the blast bags and gun tubs, then washes and weathering.

Looking very sweet Don. Clean and crisp. Thanks for showing us how you made the demizanas. Maybe you're hiding the rum in that?

Good Morning All, Thanks to all who have visited, for the likes and the gracious comments. Much appreciated.
Not a heck of a lot going on but having fun doing it, just a few pictures showing what';s going on:

The windless with it's poles(is there a proper name for these?)

The next few pictures are showing the process I used to make some demizanas

This one is showing the tools I used

This is showing what I have been mainly busy at this week, making shooter glasses. Normally I wouldn't show this but being we are drinking rum out of these so I thought it was a little nautical. It is a 60th birthday party with a Jamaican theme, hence the colors and Appeltons rum.

Here is the final demizanas, the small one still needs some refinement. They are about 30 and 10 mm tall.

And to end with, I have the port side deck rail installed and the top timbers re-installed. Now onto the starboard side

Thanks again for stopping in and have a Good One

Hi John- the planking is coming together! Here's a link on those minwax products. The pre-stain is to prep the wood before you stain for an even application of stain. The sanding sealer would be more appropriate to prep the wood for paint and not used before staining. Hope this helps.

For you history buffs, the USS Argus was instrumental in winning a major battle in the Barbary Wars in the early  1800's under President Jefferson. Marine Lt. Presley O'Bannon was the Marine commander aboard the USS Argus and was the hero of the Battle of Derna that gave birth to the first line in the Marine Corps Hymn..."to the shores of Tripoli". O'Bannon was awarded the Mameluke sword by the restored prince of Derna, Tripoli and the Mameluke sword was adapted by the USMC for all officers to wear during formal ceremonies to this day.

The Argus gave artillery support during the battle and helped turn the tide of battle. These Barbary Wars were the equivalent of fighting ISIS today.

Ahoy shipmates (and all that blarney!) I am back!!!

After a pause and change of model I have returned to the watery kind.

I got the Amati Oseberg on ebay at a reasonable price most of which was probably accounted for by the pretty box! The Viking boats required surprisingly little wood which is exactly what Amati provide. There are instructions dubiously translated into English, a good sheet of 1/1 plans, a little box of bits and pieces. Lots of small dowel to make oars with, a wee bit of deck planking veneer and some well cut laser pieces including the pre-shaped strakes, the false keel and bulkheads and that is about it. Would you believe you even have to add your own glue!!!

Anyway, I appreciate this is not an accurate representation of the real Oseberg and it is interesting to note that Amati now seem to sell exactly the same kit named the 'Drakkar'.

I don't intent to modify it very much but I can see that the plywood edges will need to be covered and the deck planking done completely differently from the destructions. I have looked up a couple of other builds to get me up to speed.

So here goes, a couple of pictures of the box and contents to start with and I just couldn't resist posting a couple of pictures of my interim model (with apologies to MSW).

I'm calling this one done! It has been a fun build, working at 1/2" scale is very cool. Wish I could build a ship in that scale. The kit wasn't without problems though. Obviously, being foreign made there is a language problem with the plans and instructions. Also the plans and instructions did not agree on some structures. I've also noticed the sizing is off in places - a handrail that's almost as tall as a person; there's over 6' of headroom on the gundeck.

Those things aside, I'm glad I did this kit and would recommend it to others. Now to figure out how to change the log title to Finished

A big thank you to everyone that has followed and helped out along the way!

With the completion of the elm tree pumps, the deck furniture is complete.  The pumps in the kit were cast metal and awful!  I just received my cannons today.  I bought 6 pewter cannons from the Lumberyard:  Their 1/4" scale 4 pounders are exactly as long as a 3 pounder in 5/16" scale which is what I need .  The carriages are supposed to be swiss pear, but they aren't terribly pink, and the wood itself isn't surfaced the best - kingd of rough.  I may need to make these from scratch.
