amateur reacted to EdT in Young America 1853 by EdT - FINISHED - 1:96 - POB - extreme clipper
Jan,
The Jorgenson style screw clamps are home made. A detailed drawing and instructions for making these are included in The Naiad Frigate, Volume I. Also included is information to make a simpler version of the clamps. I have used both types for years and find them indispensible.

Looks great.
Is there somewhere a shop that sells these clamps, or are they self-made? (these probably are, I should refrase: or have these to be self-made)

amateur got a reaction from Canute in Admiral Vernon by philo426 - FINISHED - Steingraber
Steingraeber is a German firm. It used to issue a couple of own kits until the early seventies I think.
They still exist, but only as a shop selling kits from other manifacturers (and they sell shipmodels, of rather questionable quality....)

amateur reacted to kpnuts in Wasa by kpnuts - Airfix - 1/144 - PLASTIC
Hi all a little update, well after exhaustive research(20 mins on google pooped for the rest of the day now) the Airfix kit is a little wrong the little sticky up thing on the top of the rails do not exist(thats great as I thought I would have to make some of those as I broke some whists struggling to get the warped hull together, also there should be another gun port on the second tier down sternwards of the last on on the model, roughly where the little slot is on the kit, I may add it when I find out what purpose the slot is for also the ornamentation above the top rail dose not exist neither does the ornamentation between the rails. not tremendous problems so should be able to sort them.
These are the little sticky up things which I've now removed.

Did uou know this one? It is in German, but the drawings are not drawing of the frames (spant 116, letter d) suggest hinges on the upper side.
http://dingler.culture.hu-berlin.de/article/pj315/ar315001 in the same issue of this journal are more articles on this ship (mainly engine stuff, check on the first link on the page: band 315, it brings you at the table of contents of the issue)

amateur got a reaction from Karleop in 1970's Billing Boats Wasa Help
That's one of the logs I referred to, yes. The other one is this one: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/5431-vasa-by-karleop-–-billing-boats-–-reviving-a-poorly-built-model/page-1
Don't misunderstand me. Wasa is indeed not an easy one. And there are more projects of this size that end somewhere long before the finish line (not alway sthe large, sometimes also the smaller ons that end their lives unfinished in a cupboard)
The only thing I wanted to stress is that Billings Vasa has Always been the one closest to the real thing.
And no, a ship like Vasa isn't the easiest start in modelling.

With respect to the bunker doors: lookoing at the puc of the Dutch liner (ss rotterda, early twenties), you can see that the doorst hinged sideways, with no visible hinges on the outside. The hinge was inside, and on the outside there are one or two large nuts to secure th e door a(to the extreme left of the pic you can see a closed door, and left of the coalloadi g people you can see the inside of an open door.
titanic had the same construcion (as ifound out in the internet), no idea wheter or not the German liners were of the same build.

Little update...
These little hatch doors will cover the openings for bunkering coal, ( 13 on each side) where the slide-chutes are placed .....
Hull is now covered with plating, and the waterline is marked, (for applying the masking tape, when painting), with an permanent ink marker
Nils
this, borrowed from the web, shows a dutch liner being bunkered with coal at NY Hoboken piers
the bunker hatches will bear the hinges on the top sides
The black marking is the waterline
doors not permanently mounted yet, have to coordinate the correct positions together with the portholes on that level. Just noticed, it must be one level (belt) higher, and not so near to the waterline
