trippwj reacted to EdT in Young America 1853 by EdT - FINISHED - extreme clipper
Thank you all for these comments.
Thank you, Daniel, for posting the pictures. I love old shipyard photos. The clutter and seeming confusion reminds me a lot of my workshop. I believe those framing platforms were often set up fore and aft of the first erected frames, then moved as the erection progressed.
I wanted to mention in the last post, that the four stem pieces were the second set to be made. The first set were slightly undersized, something I did not notice until matching them to the drawing. The reason for this was that the pdf printing was set on "shrink to fit oversized pages" instead of "actual size" - a very slight difference. I usually eliminate this issue by making sure the drawing does not need to be shrunk to fit, but on these early sheets I often don't get those checks made. I am well versed in all of these Adobe software settings, having wrestled with them - endlessly it seems - to get all of the Naiad CAD drawings published at the right scale and page size on pdfs. However, eternal vigilance is required. Settings carry over from the previous print job, so it is easy to print at the wrong scale. I mention this as a reminder to always check through the print settings when printing patterns or drawings from pdfs. Save yourself some work - and material.
Hope this helps someone out there.

thanks Popeye i doubt that Popeye, i had many moments where i just thought of giving up on it.
yesterday worked further on the lower railings and the top ones around the stairs.
also glued two pieces of left over 1.5x3 sapely together to create some more 3x3 as i need to make 13 more of the little posts with the black bead on top.
hopefuly it will work out wiht the seam almost invisible

thanks dragzz the wood is 3x3 sapely for paints I use some left over revel paints. the varnish is plain clear but it does leave a bit of yellowish tint. I have bought some admiral paints and varnish that I will use on my endeavour
thanks Sjors but they are just little things I am adding
my camera is a cheap one so quality is not that good. the pictures usually turn out yellow when I don't use the flash
thanks Robert
thanks Anja. I am almost completely back to normal just a bit of a flair up of the rash which I assume may be because of the building but the ointment is helping with that
and thank you for the confidence. I do feel that in the almost 2 years I have been building now I have learnt not to be afraid and that anything can be fixed. now I just need to work on improving my skills
thanks Randy
although I only had one day this weekend (had to work Saturday) I feel like I have done a lot
I finally managed to get some magnets. after some deliberation I decided to fit them inside the top deck so I craved 2 round holes. the first one went well without damaging the deck planking the second wasn't so great so I had to redo some of the planking
here they are fitted
one magnet is showing a bit through and at the other I need to replace some planking that I seem to have dented
also finished the first railings around the stairs

Pictures please ( of the rigging then )

LOL, you will have more fun building one - you haven't finished your Victory yet - you don't want another, your wife will kill you!
It is going over because Amati actually own the model, and of course, they take professional pictures for box art and other promotional stuff.
Thank you Joe.
You could make the kit every bit as good, if not much better than the one I made. One thing I do notice on some threads is that some areas seem to be rushed, especially hull prep and painting. If you take your time on this area - fill, sand, fill, sand etc, prime the hull to see where the rest of the imperfections are, and go through it all again until most if not all imperfections/cracks are gone - and then for good measure, do it one last time, the end result can look great - even if you make a hash off the planking (as I usually do...). This does take time, as does the painting - and masking for this particular model. I am sure I spent more time preparing the hull and masking than any other aspect.
Always take your time, never rush. If you're not happy with what you've just done, simply start that area again - this happened several times to get the yellow/black bands correct, or, as correct as they can be to my eye. For a kit like this (or ay other, TBH), never employ a 'That'll do' policy, and the end result is something you and others will be very happy with.

Hi Jason,
Yes it is a bizarre set up. I had seen a very bad photo of that before visiting the ship. I had also been studying the plans before my trip, and it did not show very well in the plans, so this wasw an area I have not done yet on my build, holding off until I could see it in person. Of course, this wasn't restored yet, but I found this drawing taped to the bulkhead next to the tiller and photographed it. This is also true of the windlass area, and I found the area on one of the models on display that showed this very well and I now have good pictures of this area too.

OK, finished!
Well, almost - still needs a figurehead and carronades, but apart from that, it is done - now I have months of PC based work to look forward to.
Sorry about the quality of the pics (and background) - we can now renovate the room with nice oak flooring and putting some colour on the walls (and changing those awful curtains..), now that I have just vacated the space.
Will be taking it at the end of October - have to admit that it doesn't seem that big now, after having it around for so long - almost become part of the furniture.
Need to find a nice sturdy base to attach it to..

Fairing of the hull bulkheads has been completed. I am happy to report that the safety timbers installed on the bulkhead 'horns' served me well and no pieces were broken during the sawdust festival.
The safety timbers have been removed and reserved for possible future use.
I will now begin to construct the 'shadow box' on the starboard side which will serve to show the exposed 'frames'. This next photos shows the laser cut shadow box pieces and 20 identical 'frames', 10 of which have been doubled up. The interior of the box will be painted black.
The laser burn on the side of the frames to be exposed shall be removed in a mini-fairing operation after they are installed (they are cut over sized).

So if I understand correctly 18 pages in your log gets you to page 5 in the instructions , that's 3.6 log pages per instruction page. And if my math is correct, you should have 612 pages in your log when you finish. :) :)

Augie,
Seen ships made of bone, ivory, needles, popsicle sticks, etc' but never yet out of petrified wood..... B) Maybe I can be the first.....
I guess I better check my warning points.......... :P
Sjors,
The water is out the back door....for now...we are moving into our own house this week so I get my new hobby room!
If you keep starting logs, you may be petrified before you finish any more ships....... :D :D :D
Anja, Frank, Bob, Wayne, Per,
Thanks for the compliments and for watching my build....
Cheers,
Jim

trippwj reacted to Thanasis in USS Constitution by Trippwj - Modelkrafter kits - BOTTLE
Hi Wayne. I wish you a nice trip with this project...
My two cents. I had never built a ship in bottle kit, so I have no experience about the easiness of a supplied bottle. But having been dealing with ordinary bottles, I would firstly check the clearness and worry less about the diameter of its neck.
Looking at the photo, the bottle in front of the manual, I would like to know how much of the text I could read, on a part of it being placed inside the bottle...Then I could figure how much of my work, could be visible.
Certainly all the above make no sense, if you want to use the kit as it is, including the old bottle.
Thanks

Hi Mobbsie,
I've been offline for most of the week as the place we were staying in Dorset had no Internet and no mobile phone coverage! I was going through a bad case of MSW withdrawal by the time we left. No shipmodelling, but did manage a visit to Portland Bill while we were there (on one of only two days in the week that the lighthouse is closed to visitors )
We're in Florence (Italy) now and I just received another dose of kultcha with a four-hour tour of the Ufizzi Gallery and Vasari Corridor. Time now to put the feet up for a while and catch up with all my MSW friends.
Thanks again for a great weekend at Chatham, Portsmouth and Chateau Mobbsie!

I have re-do the mainstay and now I can called it mainstay !
I think it's a improvement instead of that cable that it was first.
So please, tell me what you think about it.

Hi Grant,
My company knows that I do a little building.
That's part of the therapy

Here are the promised pictures.
It's not perfect as I'm saying before but I keep it this way.
When I have to choose between this and ratlines, give me the ratlines…...
Next to do is to make a few futtock staves so I can go up with the shrouds and ratlines.
I hope I have the spare parts next week so I can go further on the shrouds and ratlines at the foremast.
