Now, about that gooder English - I think I managed to get ye Olde English, some good ol' southern and some downeast along with some of that Hausteralian speak.

Really quite envious - and wondering if Chatham will ever be the same again?

Sjors, I do need any help and advise you care to give. You too Augie. I just put the transom on after using my Dremel to sand the correct angle. One of the balsa fillers they sent me with the kit was missing a critical section. I had to re-build it. Now I'll have to use filler and sanding to finish it.

The plastic mitre box is great. It gives me perfect cuts (if it can last).

    Rob,

Thank you.  Your comments are appreciated.  You are right. Preferences vary.  I will say that deck arrangements and details were not among my decision variables.  Neither was size - although YA was a pretty large ship as extreme clippers go.  I was looking primarily at the form, structure and performance of the extreme clipper type.  Webb built 9 of these, McKay 11 - at least by the classification given by most experts.  Of McKay's ships I considered Lightning and Sovereign of the Seas - of Webb's Comet and YA.  Ultimately, I wanted something after 1851 when the early infatuation with high floor deadrise was beginning to wear off and the designs became more moderate in that regard  - without really sacrificing speed.  The 335 foot, four masted Great Republic is really a different class of ship and the fact that she never sailed as originally built leaves her a bit of a mystery.  Donald McKay - the ship - was classed a clipper packet, so is not indicative of the type I was interested in.

If you have followed my previous build, you will know that wooden ship structure is my major focus.  What I found interesting about Webb was his judicious use of timber.  His designs were light, but very strong - as YA's sailing life can attest.  I will discuss some of this in the next part.

Lol- thanks guys!  Yeah, the robbery thing was a bit freaky (just heard the commotion while doing my business- tried to be verrrry quiet in case one of the thugs busted the door open and caught me off-guard!).  But so far I've had some good feedback from the interview- they're now passing my info along to their customer (again) to present me as a good candidate.    The people there are great, and the area is perfect!

They did say that I could start work in about a month after/if I receive an offer, which is at least something to aim for.  I'm basically ready to go- I could start anywhere in about a week (just waiting on offer and then gotta find an apartment).

So just going through some stuff here and maybe poke around the build a bit...

Hey- I'm back!  Trip and interview went really well- now just gotta wait and see (said it could take up to a month for me to start if they make an offer)...  Also checked out the area- gorgeous scenery and nice, friendly people!    Only negative thing was that I just happened to be using the restroom in a convenience store (right after the interview thankfully) as it was being robbed by two guys with guns!!!  (did NOT want to pop my head out, but luckily no one got hurt!)  So cops, detectives, statements, and being on the other side of the crime scene tape was a bit weird- felt like I was in a CSI episode (and my hotel was right next door too~)...  But other than that, the interview and everything was great!!!

Now back to your usual programming, and I'll try to get some building done here and there.

    Thanks for the well-wishes!  I felt everyone's positive vibes~~

Russ is probably the foremost knowledgeable person on this forum for when it comes to the Constitution. He knows her inside and out. In the past when it was MSW1 he had given me more information then I had in the book for this ship. and trust me I have everyone but 1 or 2 that has to do with her. Anything you would want or need to know about this ship he would be able to tell you, and on top of that he is very knowledgeable on other Sailing Ships as well, if he thinks he can help someone with a problem he doesn't think twice about doing so. He has been a member of MSW way longer that me. I have only been a member for a little over 5 years now, I meet him on MSW about 3 or 4 days after I join this forum. He is good trust me. If he saids it isn't so then it isn't so.

This has been brought up I do not know how many times over the years. No, it is not true. Someone just made it up and for many years now, we have been plagued with it.

Her first sortie was in July 1798 and she cruised in the Caribbean later that year and into 1799 to protect US shipping against the French during the Quasi War between the US and France that lasted from 1798-1801. The US was not at war with Great Britain at this time and she did not engage any British ships nor was she anywhere near the Azores or Scotland. I have read the logbook for this period and I can tell you that the story above is just not true.

Her storage capacity is probably about right for the most part. I am sure you can nit pick on many details there, but the water and shot capacity are probably very close to correct. During her time in the Carribbean, she stayed at sea for over a year, being replenished at sea by supply ships.

    Hi Guys,

Just a quick update on the weekend.

Grant arrived at Chatham rail station dead on time ( good old BR ) and we hooked with no probs, it was at the car that I told him there were two others who would like to meet him, you should have seen his face, it was a mix of delight to see Anja and abject fear on seeing Sjors  . It was one of those wonderfull moments.

The day at Chatham was great, Dave, our guide went out of his to assist us and he showed us everything we wanted to see and more, even a model from 450 odd years BC.

On returning home it was of course catch up time on MSW and a very warm and friendly evening was enjoyed by all, turned in about 10:30 cos none of us are spring chickens any more and we had a fairly early start on Sunday, Grant slept in  .

Time at Portsmouth was limited due to Grants schedule but the Mary Rose Exibition, Victory, Victory Museum and the Warrior were all visited, lunch was somewhere in there as well.

We dropped Grant of in Southampton at 15:30 so that he could pick up his hire car and said a very sad farewell.

Anja, Sjors and myself got home at 19:00 and got stuck into a Chinese take away and enjoyed a relaxing evening.

My house is empty now and all the sadder for it, I dropped A & S off at the dock and a further sad farewell ensued.

So Sjors now has his aggy so look out, it's gonna happen.

I would like to openly thank Grant, Anja and Sjors for bringing life and laughter into my home and for a truly great weekend, THANKS GUYS.

    First meeting at Chatham

Sjors carrying his Aggy and Anja is glad this the last pic

Greetings, I have attached the block to the hull, then I attached a piece of aluminum angle to the block, this bolts to the Wilton Power Arm.  The best thing about having a power arm is you can move your work into any position needed.  (See photos below).

My first step will be to cut the shear into the deck, after that is complete I will start shaping the hull.

    Cheers,

Keith, the old oak had not yet died. Earlier in the summer we had to get a branch removed from another tree (it had split and was hanging forty feet up in the air), we figured since we had someone there with the gear, we'd have him check out a few limbs on the oak. After climbing about ten feet, the tree started resonating like the mother of all base drums and the guy decided he wasn't going to climb any higher. In the end, the cottage and all who use it are safer, and in less then a generation the corset canopy will have covered the hole and new trees will also have grown up.

According to the crew on Friday, there was some blight that struck a lot of oaks twenty five years ago, or so, and many are now becoming hazards.

Business is good if your an arborist.

Tapered and stained the masts, installed the stack stay rigging cleats, davits and lifeboats. Took a while for the lifeboats as 'we' couldn't decide what color the canvas should be.    Also had to pick a color to represent water in the fire buckets.......

Still looking for Christmas lights. :P

Remaining items are searchlight, lights, masts and rigging, maybe a flag.....

    Sjors,

Thanks for the visit.....still looking for Christmas lights.....    but that might have to wait until we are moved.....hopefully in about two weeks.
    Progress......

Was able to install the stanchions and railing with the help of my magnifier, light oil and tweezers as well as a lot of patience.  The holes in the posts are so tiny it was hard to see them even under magnification.....took a bit of poking with the tweezers.  And when there was any misalignment, the bras wire would drag, thus the need for oil......

Also made progress on the lifeboats and life rings.....

    Cheers,

you may want to check out the Masting & rigging spreadsheet that Danny Vadas developed which takes your input based on the specific establishment and class then calculates the spars etc.  it is available here: http://modelshipworldforum.com/ship-model-masts-and-yards.php

Main mast (from step) is 210 mm (scale) 68.9 ' (1:1)
Main top mast - 126.1 mm
    Bowsprit - 124 mm
Fore lower yard - 161.4 mm
    Main t'gallant yard - 66.4 mm

EDIT - fixed my silly typo on the yards.

For the last week my boat has sat dormant due to my work schedule.  I managed to almost get the hull done and now it awaits paint.  I must admit I am terrified of ruining this boat with the wrong color scheme but alas it is my first attempt at painting a wood ship.  Below I have applied sealer to it, which did a great job of blending in the wood filler and smoothing out the hull for paint.
