Today my copy of Ancre's Le Cerf arrived, not to bad just a little over a week, it was actually at my Post Office over the weekend and I only received notice yesterday to pick it up today. At a quick glance it looks like Mr Dusek got it right. Now that f I can get the clinker part right......

My Le Cerf arrived! 6 days from ordering, Czech Republic to New Jersey. That's pretty darn good. I must say the Dusek kits are seriously good. Nothing shabby about the quality or service.  Now I have to wait for my Ancre book to arrive from France, I think that may take longer.

Not now. The second planking should be glued to the bulkheads only (as far as I remember the instruction manual suggests this) and then you will see if it needs filler.

ModelExpo has it on Phantom page (separate chapters or all-in-one pdf), just scroll down to Description and click second tab (Instruction and Parts List).

What you need to realize is that the practicum was originally  written for a classroom project and NOT for home use.  Several new builders were working on the Phantom with my help and we met twice a week.  We worked on the model together in a classroom environment.  I was asked to also allow the MFG to place it on their site and I said it was OK.   Folks thought it would be useful.  The references to drawings in my guide were pointing to the actual instruction manual which came with the kit at the time...about 12 years ago.  My guess is that the instructions have changed or at least the pagination.

It is what it is.  Still worth every penny....free.  But if you have a question...dont be shy, ask your question in the appropriate forum or start a build log.

Another step forward. Have completed quarterdeck rail with swivel gun posts.
With the foredeck swivel guns posts I have copied the rear post as to how they sit in conjunction with the trim running along the side of the ship - so as to keep everything the same. Sorry for maybe not being historically correct - on the instructions the front posts overlap the trim.
Side steps and fenders in place.
Also have changed the spindles on the quarterdeck gangways as I did not like the kit supplied ones. Hopefully these look a bit better.

I used an app where you can take a picture of a text.  You can extract the text from the picture. After that it was just a matter of using Google translate., there is a few mistakes , but overall it is okay to understand.

I located a copy of Boudroit's monograph for the Le Cerf and it's on order too, that should aide the research department. I want to try to carve the decorative transom in pear, the clinker hull should be a challenge. I'll probably replace some of the kits wood with pear. Daniel has always been amenable about offering replacements at a very reasonable price. I ordered the kit version with the brass cannon's. I better get out to the mailbox!!!!!

    Hi Kurt,

Funny you should mention it. I have the kit right here as I was going to do a little slide show or video of the contents of the kit for Ages of Sail, which carries the kit. I think it's oddly overlooked by the general ship modeling community. The standard kit, like other Dusek kits, uses resin castings for the cannons, and that's the only downside I see to it, as I prefer nicely turned brass. Probably something Chuck sells might work.

What I really love about the kit is that it's one of the few non-Viking ship model kits that features clinker built planking.

I've been planning on taking some photos and I can post them here for you in the next couple days.

    Hello A
With the summer camping season upon us I've had very little time to work on any of my modeling projects, the Harriet Lane  still sits on the bench and I've parked the Niagara as well.   I had toyed with the idea of taking some material along but was always deterred by the hassle involved with moving a semi completed project, so the idleness continued, that is until recently!

I was perusing MSW one day and came across Clare Hess's (Catopower)  build log for the HMS Alert from Shipyard (link below)) a paper model...I've seen paper done before, primarily following Doris's scratch builds (link also below).  The attraction to paper is the lack of special tools required to complete a build.

So with these two excellent builders as inspiration I took the plunge and ordered the Shipyard Pinta kit from Age of Sail.  My primary reason for choosing this kit was cost, it is only $22, I did spring for sails and mast accessory kits which brought the total up to $36.16, less shipping.  Not an exorbitant amount for an experiment.  THe kit arrived in a couple days and was packaged very well, the main kit consists of 5 pages of printed parts, 1 laser cut in heavy cardboard and 4 printed color parts, some really nice flags, and lots of color photos/instructions .  The sails are nicely printed on fabric and precut, the mast are just dowels of various diameters, but does come with a laser cut crows nest, which is a nice addition.

So here goes another build log...this one though will only be added to when we get away for the weekend as it is happening on the rv dining table!
The first couple pics show the kit packages, I plan to take a snap of the individual sheets as they are used.

The ships keel and frames are laser cut from heavy pressed card...

These were easy to remove with a #11 scalpel...

Once all the parts were removed the main structure was assembled using PVA, the parts fit was very good, the parts went together with no fiddling whatever...

I used a straightened paperclip to run a small bead of glue on each kerf before mating the pieces together then used a lego to square things while I readied the next part...

It didn't take long to complete the frame...

So that were she sits for now, the plan is to build this little ship pretty much box stock with the exception of the ropes, which I will spin up on my rope walk, looking through the sheets of parts the real challenge looks like it will be the rigging blocks, those I may replace as well, but we will see.
Thanks for looking in, appreciate you time and attention
    J

I've done a bit more - added trim pieces inside and outside and stained the deck (Minwax Golden Oak) and the rest of the hull (Minwax Natural).  I'm not to happy with the deck as it a little splotchy due to the variation in the wood.

    1/4 is 1:48 scale.
Totally agree with you about "it is not clear what exactly do you get". Is it so hard to include some photos? Argh!
    So hope this will help:
Oliver Cromwell is not really a kit - it is a laser cut jig, plans, wood sheets/strips, wood for frames, some laser cut parts.
Here is the content of the box:

Ended up fully scratching it and not using the parts provided, for various reasons. You can read first few pages of my build log, if interested

To be honest, even if it is not a kit - I do not think it is very difficult. "Scratch building" is less scary than typically described, especially with lots of good logs on MSW that are better than any "practicums".
I was thinking about starting with Hannah or Oneida (with laser cut frames) - but decided that cleaning up all that laser char is less pleasant than just cutting the frames using bandsaw / scroll saw.
And I was really right about it! When I got that "timbering set" for Oliver Cromwell and tried to use the laser cut keel parts - cleaning up the char was a b%tch! It was not a fun process, and I hated every minute of it. I tried scraping it, sanding it, etc - takes a lot of efforts, it sits very deep into the pear wood, especially on the endgrain. You end up with very inaccurate parts after this, they do not fit together well enough.
Way easier to just cut them out of the sheet of wood. Clean and no charring!

Let me know if you have any additional questions, would be great to have another Oliver Cromwell log here! Feel free to PM
