Ian,
Looking great! Any luck yet with the railing?

Corporate service to the customer isn't what it used to be. Oh well. Perhaps I could loan you the part for your brother to copy. Let me know. We can keep that idea as a standby.

Ian,
I did not see your response until today. Anyway, the part number in the Cap Horn kit is part 75 for the curved railing at the stern. The other two railings for the poop are 73 and 74.
I recommend that you contact Heller and ask for the Cap Horn part. It is in production while Preussen is not.

Ian,
I will check on that detail issue for you. I also found Heller's website, which is up and running. According to their online catalog, Cap Horn has been reissued but Preussen has not. Given that they are virtually the same kits except for the one mast, that railing should be available to you. I have copied their "Legal Notice for you, including their email address:

Aaaaand done, I used a few washes to bring out the highlights, then a dry brush to white to hit the night points on the rivets etc. Then some streaking grime, then some dark brown to represent chipped rust points, then some streaked rust from those points.
i know someone is going to say “they would never let it get that bad” but I don’t know boats.

Beautiful work so far! I do have one question concerning the forecastle bulwarks, though. Your model has them as solid structures but I have always seen them as opened, with the railing supported by pillars. Should the dark wood between the painted pillars be cut out? For example, look at the row above the green and white triangular markings. I wonder if the seven lighter and narrower vertical and slightly slanted areas are actually pillars or posts that support the red and white striped railing?

I have one recommendation for you. There is a website dedicated to paper modeling, www.papermodelers.com. It has individual sections for modeling in every genre, including one specifically for ships and watercraft. Members have really helped me on occasion! And, the work there can be incredible!

I guess you read the stories Piet wrote in his log on the Java. Those guys did what thay could. It’s a pity that the government here in the Netherlands seriously thought that DeRuyter /Tromp were capable of what they were sent out to do: scare away the Japanese. For that purpose they were too little and to lightly armed. Bravery compensated part of that, but not all.
