Bill Morrison reacted to marktiedens in HMS Vanguard by marktiedens - Model Shipways - scale 1:72
Hi - managed to get some planks down on the lower gun deck. The ends of the planks on the left opening will not show - the grating will cover that area.

Hi Peter - I see what you mean. I think I can add some planks down below without too much trouble. I don`t always think far enough ahead. Thanks for the tip. I am always open to advice or suggestions.

Bill Morrison reacted to flyer in HMS Vanguard by marktiedens - Model Shipways - scale 1:72
Hi Mark
Great work.
Just a small hint although I might be a bit late: Parts of the lower gun deck will be visible from above where in the waist the two open companionways will lead from the partly visible upper deck down to the gun deck. I would recommend to put in some small planked false deck parts of the gun deck (I mean the one with the dummy guns) as long as there still is some limited access.
I forgot it on my Bellerophon and had to do some keyhole surgery to put the planks in place.
Cheers

A little progress - the inner bulwarks were planked & painted red. I pre-painted the lowest plank before glueing in place so I didn`t have to mask anything off. Next will be the fittings for this deck - they need to be done before fixing the upper decks in place. The ship`s stove should be interesting - it is provided in etched brass!

Hi everyone. The gun deck is now planked & false treenails added. I did the false treenails by just giving a small twist with a #77 drill bit - just enough to break the surface. A coat of poly then makes them visible, but not too overdone. I only did the treenailing to the part of the deck that will be visible. Also the edges of the planks were darkened with a #2 pencil before glueing down.

Thanks guys. On to the upper gun deck. The deck is provided in 2 pieces - a front & rear half. I cut both halves down the middle in order to ease installation & they fit almost perfectly.so they were glued in place. The written instructions say to plank this deck with tanganyka strips,so I looked through all the wood strips & couldn`t find them. I finally realized that the deck planking strips are provided as basswood. I have some tanganyka strips in my stash.but not nearly enough so I will go ahead & use the basswood from the kit.
I also lined off the deck for a four plank shift using 100mm long planks.

It is better not to believe the kit than to believe. Better to measure three times!! I keep my fingers crossed for the result!! Ondras

All bulkheads are now glued in place, the dummy barrel strips were slid into the slots in the bulkheads & painted black,& the stern counter patterns added. I also made some bow filler blocks from balsa & glued them in place along with the bow deck pieces. The instructions say to plank the bow deck & build the beakhead bulkhead now,but I think I will wait until I see how the gunport patterns line up.

Starting work on the ship,I first glued the 2 halves of the bulkhead former together & glued the stem & keel in place. Next, all the bulkheads were removed from the plywood sheets & test fitted along with the lowest gun deck, which serves as a good stiffener. Everything is dry fitted for now to see how everything lines up. Everything fit together nicely with only a few swipes with a file in a few spots. Sighting down the sides,I don`t see any bumps or dips in the edges of the bulkheads, which is a first for me! I must say the laser cutting seems to be spot on everywhere & even the edges are only a light brown, instead of burned black - I am very impressed with the kit so far.

Hi everyone - this will be my build of the Vanguard by Model Shipways. This kit was made by Model Shipways for a short time under license from Amati. Included in the kit are 20 plan sheets,27 laser cut wood sheets of various woods,11 sheets of etched brass, along with all the usual fittings, plus a lot of cast metal items. All the rigging line is on Mantua spools & looks to be of decent quality, although I may replace some of it with Syren rope depending on the application. The rigging blocks look to be above average quality, but I will still probably use Syren blocks. Copper tape is provided for coppering the hull rather than individual copper plates. Also, all the guns are cast metal instead of turned brass. As I understand, the Amati version has the gun carriages made of metal but my kit provides wood carriages. There is a LOT of strip wood plus a large handful of walnut dowels. This appears to be a high quality kit & should be fun to build!
A few pics of the contents.......

P.S. - please let me know if the link below works........took me about 6 tries

Hi - back to the ship after a bit of a break. After re-doing the gratings, stanchions were added with a rope railing (Syren rope). The 2 stanchions at the bottom of the ladder were simply glued to the steps. The grating - ladder assemblies will be glued in place after the 28 gun carriages are mounted on the upper gun deck. I still have to make all of the carriages,so it will take a little while.

Hi - finally got the rudder coppered & hinges on & painted accordingly. Hard to tell from the pictures, but it was tapered at the back edge & toward the bottom. It is removable,so I will set it aside & move on to another area. Thanks for looking!

Jamie,
Beautiful! I have two of these in my stash. You have made me look forward to building one.
I do have three suggestions, however. The first is to use copper tape cut to the proper length and width for the lower hull, unless the lower hull was painted. The second is that, when you are rigging the shrouds, they should go through the lubber holes in the tops, not around the tops. And, finally, try planking your own deck; it will look much better than the printed one used by Scientific.
I hope that my suggestions are not too cruel. You did a beautiful job!

No hurt feelings on suggestions/critiques Bill, it’s a great way to get better. All 3 items are definitely on my list for build 2. The hull is painted copper, but strips of copper and planking the deck would have looked pretty nice. Shrouds, I just goofed up, and the deadeye shortcut on the model would have made it pretty tough to back track by the time I caught the fowl up. Chalked up to experience, unfortunately.
if I had it to do over again, I would have done those items, real dead eyes, better/smaller wooden blocks, better line, and done a better job of pre-rigging blocks to the masts.

64 guns vs 100... I dont think the keel will be the key point deciding the price. The price of the competition is definitely highly relevant. Currently there are 3 large shipkits from the Nelson era. Victory in 1:72, Vanguard in 1:72 and Agamemnon in 1:64. I would guess that it end up around 1200-1500Euros.

Don't quote me, but I think there may be some real movement regarding Amati releasing the 64th scale Victory. I would be so happy to see this released - I no longer work there, but this was two years work for me, and would be fantastic to see it available to buy.

I will definitely contact them. Given you designed her, drew the scale plans etc. do you still retain any ownership to the model? Could you not sell her as part of your current venture? As for cost; Amati are kidding themselves if they think junkies like us wont spend the big bucks on things of rare quality and beauty such as this! Sure, its not a kit that will fly out the door in the hundreds, but I bet more than a few on here alone would buy it.
Any chance you could maybe post a few more pics of your design in stages/completion? Fully understand if for copyright reasons etc. you cannot. Thanks for your work.
Cheers

Overall, she is 1.6 metres long. It dominated my large dining table when finished her. There are no dummy barrels on this one, all fully detailed carriages with full length cannon. There should be a thread with a lot more pics somewhere on here.
I do not work for Amati any longer, so cannot tell you when it will be released. What I do know is that I did complete everything, designs, instructions, manual, plans. I think Amati are worried the kit will cost too much, but I suspect it would still sell. But, as I said, I no longer work there, it may be an idea to email them, asking for it to be released - it would be nice, as that development was two full years of my life. Even took a trip to Portsmouth to take my own research pics.

Wow! Thank you for these pics Chris. Any idea if/when a release date? Price etc? How come if you completed the proto type 4 years ago she still isn't released? What would be the overall dimensions of such a beast? Sorry for all the questions. Stunning work! I want one!
Cheers

Hopefully Amati will release my new design for Victory, which I completed around 4 years ago. The Amati version is fully detailed inside and out.

Thanks for the comments Steve. Yeah, for this one, a lot of the rigging is just square knots around a jib or mast with a dot of glue. I think with the scale it’s hard to get all the little details, and I’m ok letting this one be a little simple and just using it to cut my teeth on. I’m kind of cheating on the belaying pins and just tying the lines to holes in the pin rail. My next ones going to be a 1:64 scale POB, so I’ll be able to be a lot more accurate with the rigging.
