Hello all, first up Thanks for all your visits, likes and gracious comments. Trabakul now has a new home on the dining room table as rigging has started and there is less chance of her getting hurt and even a less of a chance of me using the table to entertain.

Bowsprit was first, this the little fitting made to hold it in place

The little supports on either side and a strap with rings( I used eyebolts)

    Chain installed

    Lower shrouds completed

Next up is the upper shrouds and then ratlines.
     Enjoy and Take care

That planking looks great Ian. Your technique, whether it is historically correct or not, has turned out a beautifully planked hull and that is what we are striving for and what you have accomplished. I have seen pictures of a Trabakul being restored and it had strakes that did not go completely from bow to stern but stopped well short of either end. I suppose  at 35mm wide = almost 4 ft in real life would they have had access to planks this wide and could they actually handle something this large and heavy. I do not have the answers, however, I do know I like the looks of yours

A short little update, I have started the ship's boat:

Here is the balsa blank and a picture in the manual showing how it should look when done. Let's hope!

    Laminating the top rails

Ripping some .5 x 5 mm planking to 2.5 mm wide. The off cuts will be used for the interior ribs. The carving of the boat in this picture is almost completed, shaping was done using a rasp and sanding.

Showing how the keel fits on the hull, a little bit of daylight showing there but the fit is fairly good.

First planking completed, one more layer to go

I have shown this before on another log but I thought I would show it again for those who might have missed it. To make oars I cut the dowels to length, these are 3 mm diameter, give them a good soaking in water then put them in a vice to flatten them. From right to left this picture is showing the dowel, the blade after coming out of vice then the final product after a little sanding.

The paint is still wet in this picture but these are the finished oars for the ship's boat

Thanks to all for stopping in, for all the likes and the great comments

    Enjoy Your Day

I agree Jean-Pierre, same thing has happened to me.I now have my shipyard set up so that when the liquor cabinet door opens the shipyard door automatically closes and locks.

It was brought to my attention by a good friend of mine, Zoran, that I did the rigging on the rudder a little wrong. I went back to the plans and sure enough what I have done is not the same as what is shown

As you can see the plans show only a rope on the port side tied to the rudder and on mine I have blocking on both sides. Now I know my way is wrong and not historically correct, however, I'm thinking in real life this rudder is almost 17 feet long, 4 feet at it's widest point and 6 inches thick. Given these dimensions this rudder would have weighed a ton (figure of speech) and raising it in shallow waters would have been some feat of strength. I'm thinking why not give this crew all the advantage possible and let them have a four block system Or should it be done the right way? Given the temperature today and this problem I am considering a trip to the refreshment fridge. Please help, or better yet come over for a cool one

I like your idea of offering a "spiling package" as an option. Hopefully Zoran sees this and gives it some thought. Looking at their website I see they offer some walnut boards but I could not see any 1.5 mm walnut boards. Knowing Zoran, and his great service, I'm sure if one was to contact him he would be more than happy to help out and put a package together.

When mounting the yardarms I'll normally drill and glue a pin to the back side of the yardarm then drill a hole into the mast to receive the pin. I don't think just a spot of glue will hold it for very long
