  1. From what I can see, saving the money and sticking with the kit parts in this case would be a viable option. What little differences there are will get buried and mostly hidden from view once the cockpit is assembled and resting inside the fuselage. I have made my own seatbelts and harnesses before and they turned out presentable, but I still prefer aftermarket ones to my own. Laser printing isn't what I think of as art, but it does require a high degree of skill and knowledge to create the shape files and successfully print them. If I was a young man again, learning 3D file creation and printing would be high on my list of things to learn for this hobby.
  2. The kit ejection seats are very well molded it appears to me. A side by side comparison of the Eduard seats next to the kit seat sides shows the Eduard ones slightly more detailed, but not by much. I needed seat belts and harnesses, and that’s the primary reason I bought the Eduard set as the set vs the belts alone was a small cost difference. Kudos to the Airfix molds. Very good so far IMO.
  3. It’s interesting to me the way this hobby has progressed. Seems like not too long ago, a cottage industry appeared where someone would create a master part to upgrade an existing kit, then fashion a limited run mold to manufacture replacement parts from cast metal or resin. Later on, the molds improved significantly and resin upgrade parts got a whole lot better, those first ones being pretty crude sometimes. Today it’s a new ballgame. These resin upgrades are drawn in 3D cad then printed out using 3D resin printers giving just an incredible level of detail, practically flawless. I plan to build the kit supplied plastic seats just to compare them to these 3D printed resin ones. Very fine details are visible in the replacement seats.
  4. I bought all the Flory items a few years ago direct from Flory in the UK. Now, he only sends them to a distributor in the USA. Right now, this shop carries the Flory stuff: Flory Models Products — High Altitude Hobbies I have not ordered from them as my stock is still in good shape. I like the sanding sticks and will probably place an order for more of those soon.
  5. I should have said the only carrier based aircraft operational were the stringbags. All other carrier based AC were "grounded" in bad weather in the North Sea.
  6. Those rechargeable airbrushes are quite popular and I have read some very good things about them. Glad you're not having to do all that by hand/brush. Would be an enormous job on a model this size.
  7. During WW2 in the North Sea, they were the only aircraft in the air during bad weather. They did it all. Radar equipped, too.
  8. My poor wife has been inundated with my model building habits over the past decades, but even she was very impressed with this masterpiece. When she got to the last photo and saw your eyeglasses next to the model for scale reference, she was stunned.
  9. There must be one of those jet engine test stands at or around Tampa International Airport. Every now and again, I can hear the jet engines being tested.
  10. I have one hobbyshop locally that stocks a small selection of Humbrol paints. I asked him about possibly carrying the full line and he said it's more than he can afford to invest...too many paints. As it is, I have already invested to too many different lines of paint. I've got most of the Mr Color range, many of the Aqueous range, many of the Mig Ammo range, Tamiya, AK, and quite a number of automotive specific lacquers of various brands. In retrospect, I over-did it. 🙂 The last thing I want to do is invest in another line of paints. Oh, heck, I forgot to mention all the tons of Vallejo paints I have as well. 🙄 Way too much.
  11. Looks like you are going to be doing a whole lotta fine brush painting in your future.
  12. Thanks Andy. I didn't state the question very well...what I meant was, the outer box lid was the only indication that Humbrol paints were the exclusive reference that corresponded to the numbers. it took me a while to figure that out. I was looking all through the instruction pages for something that at least provided a color callout, IE; Gunmetal or Desert Yellow, or ???. Unless one has a Humbrol color chart, you really don't know what color you're looking for.
  13. After looking for the color callouts, realized the only callouts I could find were on the side of the box top, and they were for Humbrol paint numbers. While I have a ridiculously large assortment of paints from various manufacturers, very few are Humbrol, and my favorite paints are Mr. Color which I have in large supply. This set me off on a web search for a conversion chart so I could learn which Mr. Color paints corresponded to the Humbrol numbers provided. This lead me to a good website for the conversion and I wanted to share it with you here: Convert From Humbrol-General - ModelShade Just type in the Humbrol numbers you're searching for then hit enter, then click on the color reference and all the various other paint manufacturers colors for that Humbrol number will pop up. Nice little program someone did there. Sure is a big help to modelers like me. Is it always the case that Airfix only gives the color call outs on the sides of their box? Surprised I could not find them anywhere on the instructions or on the color fold out pages as well.
  14. In addition to the ejection seats and harnesses shown earlier, a set of antennas, an exterior photo etch set, and a set of resin wheels arrived for my Buc. Will begin painting and construction this weekend.
  15. Ras, you need not join IPMS to attend or display models at their contest events. Like you, I would never be able to build from scratch the quality of injected molded plastic models that can be purchased today.
  16. The biggest bass you will ever see were caught by poor boys in Florida fishing deep inside the brush and reeds using a cane pole, live shiners (for bait), and a large wash tub as a "boat". And I am not joking about it. For real. Monster bass. That's where you catch them, where average fisherman can't/won't go.
  17. Ras, IPMS is International Plastic Modelers Society, IPMS/USA Home Page | By Modelers... For Modelers (ipmsusa.org) There are many regional events held each year and can be followed/planned for by visting the site at the link provided above. While the main thrust is plastic scale models, there are most often wood ship models at the events as well. I have found the events to be much fun and I get to see beautiful work from scale modelers all over the USA. Each year, the national event gets held at a different city on a rotational basis. If you ever get the chance to attend a national IPMS event, by all means schedule the time to go see it. You will be glad you did. Last time a national event was held locally, it was hosted in Orlando (no surprise). The nearby event coming up later this month is: pelikon23flyerv2final-12-3-22.pdf (ipmsusa3.org)
  18. I'm in and looking forward to future installments of your build, Dan.
  19. Great model, Mike. Glad I didn't miss the final photos of it but somehow I lost track of the progress posts. Now that I have found it, will go back through the progress photos, too.
  20. At this same event/contest some years ago I bought the 1:60 Corel Realle De France kit at a vendor table, complete and unstarted for $45. Talk about a steal of a deal...
  21. All three look excellent! The P-47 is the Kinetic kit?
  22. I just ordered the massive 1:24 Airfix Typhoon kit and am waiting for it to arrive. I messed around and waited until it became harder to find and more expensive but I got one while the getting can still be done. Don't know when or if Airfix will release this kit again.
  23. Thanks Mike to be totally honest about it. The main reason I like to go to those contests is to look at all the vendor tables. I’ll often take some models and enter them just to have a little extra fun on the side but the main interest for me are the vendor tables, I am often able to find models for sale that are out of production and unavailable in hobby shops, or online shops
