  1. We will be ready when you are. With the intense detail of the parts you have been working on, it's better to wait until you are relaxed. Btw, what line of work are you in? Best wishes
  2. Hi John. Just getting caught up with your adventures. Thanks for taking us along. By any chance, did you make it to the Mariner's Museum in Newport News when you were in VA? The models of August Crabtree are what got me inspired to try this hobby. Looking forward to see more from your travels. Wishing you safe travels. Btw, that was pretty impressive pulling an RV through NYC!
  3. Hi Matti, Have you started bending the delicate gallery parts yet? I was thinking about that and was concerned that a soldering iron shaft would be too hot. In the past, I have bent wood over a bare incandescent lightbulb without mishap. Make sure to wear very dark (or 2 stacked pairs) of sunglasses to protect your eyes and gloves for your fingers. Although I had no problems, it would be good to make sure the kids or any pets were clear of the area in the unlikely but possible event a bulb shattered (use very light pressure). You could start with a 40 watt bulb and progress to higher wattage as needed. Best of luck! Your latest stern picture is incredible!!
  4. Thank you for the concerns. The NE part of Colorado Springs where I'm staying has been OK. One of the roads on the west side of town that I just rode by bike on last week was washed out. We had very heavy sustained rains which is unusual for here. Boulder, Colorado got hit the worst but I have heard from relatives down south in New Mexico that high water is about to flood their house. It was a very huge storm system.
  5. Hi Lawrence, Sorry for any confusion. The last 2 pictures were taken at the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs in the state of Colorado. The state of Kansas has some beautiful places but nothing quite as spectacular as Colorado. There are some beautiful and serene areas in the Flint Hills of Kansas but it is a different kind of beauty. Maybe you could visit both places! I have no timeline for when we will be able to buy a place in Colorado. It is contingent on us first selling the place in Kansas.
  6. Hi Eddie, My dad was Air Force and we moved to Colorado Springs in 1969. Back then it seemed like paradise to me! I think when you were here, Powers road was still a dirt road. It's now busier than Academy Blvd and there are houses stretching out beyond Peterson AFB now. The Garden of the Gods and Cheyenne Mountain Canyon are still amazing and beautiful places. Gold Camp Road and Rampart Range Road have been closed off at the Colorado Springs ends since I've been back. I'm guessing it has to do with the Waldo Canyon fire. I agree that traveling up Gold Camp Road is a special treat. Best Wishes,
  7. Hi Matti, That is my bike. It seems that I can hardly park it without Augie asking me to move it! I've moved it to the other side of the Kissing Camels rock formation so Augie can't see me from his window. Here's a better look at the bike. It's a KTM 950 Supermoto.
  8. Hi John, Since my ship locker is in storage, I have been falling back on my other hobbies. A bit nicer scenery for riding in Colorado than Kansas!
  9. Hi Matti, Your paintwork is amazing! You have nearly the same detail as the monster 1/10 version at a much smaller scale. Really well done! I worked on a Levin guitar years ago and it had a great tone. Hope you enjoy it. Happy birthday!
  10. Hi John! Glad I could provide inspiration. I hope you have as much fun with them as I have had. Heck, it should be 7 times as much fun! I just started my new job today and am staying with my folks in Colorado Springs while my wife is back in Wichita until the house sells. My dry dock is in storage so I will be getting my build fixes vicariously through the logs of my MSW family. I have a lot of reading to catch up on! Best Wishes,
  11. Bob, Wishing you the best on your new build. What an amazing history! I know you will do this justice.
  12. Just getting caught up with your build log. Whoa! So glad the surgery went well. Those Optivisors are great!
  13. Hi Matti! Your paintwork is the best I have ever seen on a wooden ship. Not only is it precisely applied, the colors' intensities look to scale thanks to your shading techniques. Too often colors appear too intense at that scale, but your work is brilliant! Your signature pic looks great too. It reminds me of a souvenir bookmark like you would buy at a museum. Keep up the amazing work!
  14. Thank you Matti! This is very helpful and I appreciate you taking the time to do this. What does the tip of your brush for the washes look like? From the brush strokes on the paper, it looks like a fairly wide brush and maybe more round than flat?
  15. Hi Lawrence! Thanks for stopping by. With nice straight grained woods, you can get down to 1/16" thick without too much difficulty and if it's not a brittle wood, 1/32" thick is possible if you are very careful. When getting this thin, you need to be using a fine grit sanding sleeve and go with the direction of rotation. You would probably snap the wood going against rotation. You also need to take very light passes and keep the wood moving. Stopping to change hand positions could result in a rounded divot (snipe) and too heavy a pass (fence too close to sanding sleeve) can create a snipe at the ends or a sudden grab that could crack the wood. With light enough passes, I'm not sure how thin you could go but it's probably safer to use a hard sanding block once the wood feels too flimsy. Also, make sure your fence is square to the sanding sleeve. It really does work well. Hope that helps!
  16. I would like to see how you do your paint magic on wood too. Maybe a YouTube video???
  17. Yup, some kind of magic touch you have there Ferit! Everything you've touched is golden!
  18. King Midas had a magic touch. He lived in the Phrygia region of the Anatolia kingdom. Turns out that's westen Turkey. Maybe you are a decendant of King Midas....
  19. That is so cool! I like your striving to capture the wonkiness of the original that makes it almost whimsical. The wavy edge of the gallery plank is a great touch!
