JeffT reacted to ir3 in HMS Sphinx by ir3 - Vanguard Models - 1:64 scale
The deck is installed. A few minor areas needing repair but at least in place. I experienced most of the glitches pointed out in earlier posts. Now to move on. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Bowsprit Endcap Musings
I have started work on making the bowsprit. The dowel has been cut to the right length +10mm spare. The end of the bowsprit requires shaping for the bees and end cap. Using an offcut of the dowel material I made a bowsprit test piece. The bee sits perfectly on the top flatten section. The side sides which were also flattened are nice and even along the length. The end section required an oval shape for the end cap. Finally the required 25 degrees cut to the end was made. I am reasonably happy with the end result.
After a bit of filing and sanding the end cap was a good fit, and could be set to the required angle.
With the end cap test fitted and set to the required angle some filler would be required to fill the gaps, as can be seen below. This is not a problem as this area will be painted black.
I also made a test end section piece which was a good tight fit in the end cap. In order to set the end cap at the required angle the hole requires tapering. This is what I have done on my previous models. If I do taper the end cap slot then the holes for positioning the dolphin striker could be comprised. With regards to the Indy build I am more inclined toward making the smaller oval shape and using filler as necessary. Before making a final decision on the way forward I will make a test bowsprit topmast piece so I can check it can be passed through the upper hole in the end cap.

JeffT reacted to N80FTY in HMS Victory by N80FTY - DeAgostini - 1:84 - first build
Hi All,
This is my first build, I started it in April 2023. This is the stage it is at.
Port side which has had its first sand 24/12/23. Not had any wood fillers applied yet so will need a touch up
Starboard side that still needs its first sanding.
Hull as you can see Port side has had its first sanding.
Top View of middle deck which I stencilled all the floor rather than just a section.

Welcome aboard, Andrew, and good luck on both of your projects!
BTW, the answer to your question that you posted elsewhere is that this should go in the kit build logs section in the 1750-1800 category.

JeffT reacted to N80FTY in Hi from Scotland
Hi Everyone,
My name is Andrew. I'm building my first ship which is the, DeAgostini, HMS Victory. 1/84
Yes I know this is not really a beginner ship, but please bear with me and let me explain myself so you understand a bit more why.
I have certain mental health issues, Depression, Personality disorder which leads to me not wanting to be here. So instead of constantly thinking on how and which way to leave this place, I decided to try model ship building and it takes my mind off due to the concentration needed. First off don't worry I've lived with this my whole life and have always found ways to deal with this. So NO sympathy please, Just browse help or question away like I'm an ordinary person.
If I write something that is not correct or misunderstood please let me know and I will fix it or rephase it.
I'm only here to enjoy myself and learn from others like I have done since April this year.
Since April I have started building the DeAgostini, HMS Victory. 1/84, and I have turned to this website more often than I will like to admit. So thank you everyone who builds the HMS Victory. Caldercraft included as these are the ones I seem to come across more often. But the information, techniques and individuals input and methods are very similar and useful across all builds. This has helped me so much to the stage I am currently at.
Specifically to John builds iconic military models, as his videos have also helped me out so much. Albeit he upset me this week when he showed the Caldercraft, HMS Victory. 1/72.
So I am now currently trying to save up £1050 to buy the Caldercraft and will likely build both. DeAgostini due to the sails and Caldercraft for better detail and quality. The sails on the DeAgostini is one of the reason that made me go for it as well. I've never seen the Caldercraft with sails yet. (Only the rigging).
Once I have the Caldercraft HMS Victory I will try to get both to the same stage and build them roughly to the same stages.
Anyway, this was a little about me. Feel free to ask whatever you wish, Or give some input.

JeffT reacted to Force9 in TITANIC by Force9 – Trumpeter - 1/200 - PLASTIC - White Star Liner
@Roger Pellett
Look what I finally found!
Your book recommendation started to seem familiar to me... I searched all over for it. Turns out my daughter had it with her at college! Demonstrates her interest in all things Titanic related...
I now have it bedside and am reading several chapters a night... Fascinating stuff. Great to get the perspective of Naval architect types.
In the meantime...
Folks - I apologize for the lack of updates. I've been stalling while I consider adding a YouTube series about this build. I need to build up the necessary equipment from scratch so I've petitioned St. Nick to add some packages under the Christmas tree. There is the sticky matter of being a "Good Boy" this year... I've done a back of the envelope calculation and I'm optimistic that on balance I have a net positive rating across the year. In the meantime, I'm getting up to speed on video editing.
Stay tuned!
Cheers all
Evan

Hi there, a completly new to wooden model building after a youth spent building plastic models and a 30 year hiatus. Hopefully after reading a good few build logs and taking the tips from those I hope I might make something presentable. I'm starting with an artesania Captain's Longboat HMS Endeavour. It was listed for the beginner so hopefully will suit my lack of skills working with such small wood. Am more too used to bits of 2x4 so should be interesting to see if I can adapt to the smaller scale. Might start a build log in the new year to get advice and support along the way.
Thanks

JeffT reacted to ccoyle in Sopwith Pup by ccoyle - FINISHED - Kartonowa Kolekcja - 1/33 - CARD
All empennage pieces completed.
I went ahead and added the elevators to the horizontal stabilizer. The diagrams call for plastic/wire 'hinges' to be used between the pieces. I could immediately see that this would create weak joints. So instead, I drilled pilot holes in the hinge locations and used CA glue to pin the elevators to the stabilizer -- less hinge-like but much sturdier. Here's a dry fit of the finished structure on the fuselage:
