I think it wold look good with a half and half display. Worse case if you are unhappy with the planking turnout due to either color or the planks themselves you can always copper over them.

I would make up several test pieces and compare them. As for paint depending on how you do it you can hide the planking or a thin layer and accentuate it.
Will you use enamels or acrylics?

If you want some peeling paint, daub some rubber cement on in a few spots. Paint your body color and then peel off the rubber cement daubs. I used it on some logging camp shacks and they were OK. Don't get too carried away with the technique and do everything. Less is more.

I remember several years ago Don Pruel from Annapoli gave a demo on simulting plating using tape and a airbrush. At the scale it was marvelous.

Much time has passed, but now i am back
Next step was to build the deadeyes and chainplates for the main-platform.
For the holes in the deadeyes I need a helpfull tool.
The tool it´s made from wood and brass.
The deadeyes are made on the lathe
After drilling the deadeyes the edges are chamfered upward
Now it´s time to made the chainplates.
The plates have the dimensions of 1 mm x 0,5 mm x 12mm; above an eye and down a long hole 0.5 mm x 1 mm
The plates in position
The plates are fixed with glue on the deadeyes ready for stropping
The stropp for deadeyes is made with a real splice
The rope, made from three strands, will opend and for each strand i use a needle to made the splice.
All deadeyes are finish spliced on plates
Have fun

Moving along with the hull, 120 porthole eyebrows added, and strips along the strengthening bars with microscopic rivets in them (you can see these on the original photos) as well as the flanges for the torpedo booms. Looks messy but it is yet to have its first proper primer coat.

Adding some little details.
Here are some ideas about the 2 doors aft the second deck to go to the bathrooms.
Door knobs are always installed to the right because most of the peoples are right handed.
The port one open from front to aft.
The starboard one opens from aft to front.
Knowing that deck is higher aft than fore;
It is easy to open the starboard one and there would be some space under when open.
The port one was a bit more complicated because the door opening from fore to aft would want to enter in the deck which is impossible.
The easy way to solve this is to cut the door from the bottom so that the bottom does not get stopped by the deck.
In addition reinforcement wood angles are installed in each corner. The height of these pieces passes just in front of these doors.
May be all of this is false. If We compare with a picture already shown in this forum, there are 2 doors.
On one the door knob is to the right and on the other the door knob is to the left.
But at least we agree on 1 thing the bottom of the door had to be lift so that the door could be opened.

There is no detail of the armor plates at all on the hull. So I did some masking in an attempt to have an under coat of plates, the main band running across the length of the hull did not work out too well so I had an epiphany and remembered the red tape I used on the emden, which is very thin and will do well after painting. But the time it has a couple of primer coats and a sand it should work out before the top coats.
The bilge keels also had a massive gap which needed filling.
A light sand then add the multiple porthole eyebrows. I know it looks rough now, but hopefully will not be so noticeable as it will be wearing a skirt (torpedo nets).
