It's great seeing you back, Sjors and also to hear you have a great trip to France.

At last I got something done.

DeAgostinis approach when building the hull is to assemble the keel after you done the first hull planking.
    Why I just don't know.

Had a really hard time cutting the 4mm trench along the whole hull:

    This part was the easiest:

For some reason the bow part did not fit the false keel underneath. Unable to see exactly the point I had to fair away it took ages of hit and miss.
Doing this before the planking would have saved me a hour or so...

Again this was the easiest part. Good fit:

Gunports now following the curve of the (second) hull planking:

The line was determined by measuring from the gunports.
This is the curve the second planking will follow.

Started second planking of the stern:

I had ordered planking screws from Germany to aid me in this, but the Swedish post decided to misplace my shipment.
Seems as all they can do is do a search on the computer (as we do at home with a tracking number).
And when I asked when they would get someone to look for it they answered after a brief silence that they don't do that...(!?!)
    Thats service!
Anyway, a combination of CA and wood glue made the strips follow the curve of the stern:

    One side (almost) finished:

Gunports will have their finishing touch later on:

    And lower part done:

Now I will work upwards to the top of the stern, and I have 50 gunports to open up

    Sjors,

Don't know how I missed the start of this build but I've found some room in the back and a little popcorn leftover so I'm ready to join in! Looks like you are off to a fine start on what should be a fun build.

    Woohoo physical work!

It will be nice to start seeing all your planning take shape. This is going to be a very interesting build as I rarely see builders mutilate their plastic hulls.

    By the way, nice shop!

Sjors, I use piping for a lot of storage. Wood strips, dowels and model railroad track all have their tubes out in the garage. That is originally what I was using for my ship wood as well until I got this cabinet.

I meant to post this a couple days ago but I did finish up the starboard side gun ports and more sanding. She is starting to look good on that side now. The port side is also well underway and I am hoping to have the ports finished up in a couple more days and then more sanding on that side. Once both sides are where I like them I will build out the stern and the 2nd planking will start. If I can manage it at work, I am hoping to get a 4 day weekend this weekend and should be able to get in some long build days.

Those lights are very well done. The dissipated light makes a nice soft glow that looks like lantern light. Great addition!

thanks,....nice to do my little part in the midst of such talented modelers....it came out ok, for a lazy impatient person ....maybe the lazy impatient people, are the ones that come out with inventive innovations to make things easier and faster.....i tend to do the minimum of refinement necessary to accomplish an end result......and some people say that i have so much patience :)....i guess patience is a relative term.............and gads, it's really tricky to make things even and correctly proportioned on these ships eh?......funny....i think something's centered or straight, and six months later i see....no...it's not quite straight....sheesh :).....oh...my hat's off to the serious really refined modelers, as i really don't have the heart to emulate such.......i just do enough to get the effect i want...guess i'll work on the drive unit now for the ships control.......then the drat lines which i keep procrastinating.......:)

The re-work really adds up, EJ, but it is well worth the effort.  You will always rest easy knowing you did what was necessary.  Can't wait to see the finish planking begin!

Those are called fairleads.  Their purpose is to change the direction of the line.  The line passes around the outside of the pulley. You do not need to modify them at all.

    Marc,

Thank you for that. I was fairly certain that the round up is the way to go but the drawings I had either do not show it at all or make it appear to be flat. Flat did not see right but I could not tell and I have learned not to just assume that all ships were built similar no matter how much sense something makes. I will model it that way!

AS to the model in the photo, I do have some more pictures of it. I can post them later on when I get home. THey are mostly of the stern as I collected them when I was looking at different versions of the stern configurations.

One thing Cedric has pointed out, with his build of La Reyne, and which becomes much more apparent with the hull cut down, is that the sheer of the wales at the bow rises too sharply.  In fact, the sheer at the bow should be flatter and more closely to parallel with the waterline, only rising sharply aft of the main channels.  Cedric, I believe, will be making efforts to correct this flaw because he is re-positioning all of the port locations to correspond with 16 port openings per side, on the first battery.

This is one issue I will reserve for the future scratch build. It bothers me, somewhat, but not nearly enough to go to all the trouble of correcting it.

And so, the long slow journey begins and there's no turning back now!

I had the opportunity to get into the shop early, before work began today, and I cut away the bottom of the hull on the bandsaw.  The blue tape indicates the raised waterline by 3/16".  The instant you cut away the lower hull, IMO, this becomes a much better model.

Here, I'm showing the hull halves separated by the 1/2" I will be adding at the stem.  The distance across the transom was approximated by eye, but that is very close to what it will be.  I'm making a long sanding block to flatten out the waterline.  Once I do, these hull blanks should stand with their stem pieces perfectly parallel to each other.

I'll be saving the lower hull pieces in order to experiment with my treenail and through bolt simulations, as well as for working up a layered paint protocol that will simulate the look of wood on the water, but not overly weathered.

As this is a diorama model of the ship, shortly after her re-fit in 1689, I am thinking about placing her at anchor, on the Penfeld river with the Brest Arsenal towering in the near distance, the morning sun rising to illuminate her gilt work and Tourville on a launch, being rowed out to take comand of his ship.

Next week, I go on vacation, and I may bring the blanks with me to start detailing.  Substantive updates like this will be slow coming, because I will still work on the drawing when I can.  But this is a start, anyway.

    Hi EJ,

    Nice job on the sanding.
A lot of work nut now you've got a good surface for the next planking.
    And a nice cabinet.
We are doing it with plumber pipes ( if that's correct)

Absolutely stunning. It is truly amazing what you can accomplish in a large scale model. I may have to look at this for a future build.
