A lot of ships of that era had those, Keith.  Speculation seems to be to "repel boarders" and/or "repel mutineers".  Or maybe, shoot the cook?

I have started the next project, an elizabethanian galleon.
I use some plans I did find in two old german modeling books, Mondfeld, Historische Schiffsmodelle, a german classic from the early 70., and Stoeckel,Risse von Schiffen des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts. Both authors showed very similar plans of an elizabethanian galleon, named Golden Hind or ex Pelican. It may be a model of Drakes Golden Hind. How Golden Hind looked exactly is unclear. But I like the plans, and they also seems quite right for the type Galeone of the english sailors in the time of queen Elizabeth Tudor.

Fist step was to modify the slipway. For the aligning of the frames on the keel plate I use a cross line laser

    Great start Hartmut,

I'm happy to see another scratch build Golden Hind on this forum. The book "Risse von Schiffen des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts" is indeed very helpful to build this ship.
    I will follow your build

In getting prepared to lay the deck beams, I realized that bending the relatively thick stock was going to be a problem. The kit says to "build up" the beams from 2 layers of stock held in shape by nails or pins. When the glue dries the deck beams should be good with the proper camber. How much can go wrong there?

So I asked a friend if he could cut out the 15 deck beams I needed out of beech with his laser. Each beam is 4 mm wide and 3 mm thick. They turned out great! A little trimming and sanding and they fit perfectly. I'm going to start laying the beams and finishing up the hold. You can see the limber boards in the photo. I'm also planning a small section of decking in front of the shot locker where the two transverse mini-beams are in the photo. There are also 4 support pillars in the hold under the orlop deck.  There is no finish on the model except for the well/shot locker.

    Hello friends
I added the wire holders to the main mast and the water pump I made from wood because I did not like metal .

    Hi Dave.
Excellent choice of wood throughout the build.
Model ship's don't need painting if you choose your timbers types like you have done.
Your work is very neat and clean..not a fuzzy edge to be seen anywhere.

    Regards Antony.

    Hi Kevin.
Off course we do. Wood plastic metal it's all modellng no matter how you look at it.

Wow that's kinda delicate just to look at but very nice.

Make a detailed drawing of the framework just in case someone gets clumsy. Then you can easy make a new framework out of brass tube.

    Regards Antony.

    Hi Carl,

yes, I`m glad I went for scale 1:48 its a very nice scale for details adding details, and its fun on top of it....
I`m trying on the first sample of the swivel gun and its mounting post this morning

    Nils

this is one of the smallest RB barrels with predrilled pivot- and center hole. The soldering hole for the handle must still be brought in to the barrel

the semi round support is made from a brass tube...

I`ll probably blacken the guns with dull black gun color paint

    Good evening everone

    Seaslug launcher

decided its about time to go to the quarterdeck and see if i can make some progress there

the launcher wasn't cheap but was aware of that fact before i started the build, being 3d printed it is fragile if incorrectly handled but sturdy if handled with care
the instructions are clear, but there are not that many bits anyway, and i states that there is so much more that can be done to make it look like the real thing
i have tried tonight to add a few bits on but the true effect will not be see until the rattle can have done its magic

The Hayling hoy of 1760 is a carefully researched model of an original subject at the classic scale of 1:48. This model was constructed as a prototype for a forthcoming book. Made of Castello boxwood, pear and holly, it is fully framed with one side fully planked. The model is rigged and measures 28”L x 28”H x 14W”. Offered on a custom veneered base but uncased. Serious enquiries are invited. More photographs upon request, terms available.

Thank you everyone for all your likes!

I finally finished cutting out the tops of the frames and glued them on the ship.

That took a while and a few attempts using the scroll saw.

I am currently working on the walls and doors that I will be placing on the deck.

This is the first section and door. I know that the position of this wall and the doors aren't correct compaired to the real ship, but I'm good with that. I wanted to keep the frames from view.  I hope to be able to build more of the doors and walls soon.

It sure has been a while since I have posted.  Things have been crazy around here!  I finally finished planking the middle deck!!!

It took a long while to do, but its done! The last part is to varnish it.  It is definetly not perfect,  but I have learned a lot so the next deck I plank will be a lot better.

I hope I can continue at a little faster pace. I get about 30 min per day to work on it. Usually I am too tired so I don't get to work on it as much as I want.

    Happy holidays and new years!

Ironically Jeff, the Cutwater is the only part of the whole assembly - correctly termed the "Knee of the Head" - that you HAVEN'T made . It's an extra narrow piece that fits in about the middle of the knee at water level (drawn in blue in the pic), and could be easily replaced if damaged.

I find it useful to know the correct terminology for the parts of a ship, as it makes communicating with other builders a lot easier if you can refer to a part by it's real name (saves confusion, both in the modelling world AND on the real ship ). So for future reference the various parts of the Knee are :
    1. Standard
    2. Gammoning Piece
    3. Chock
    4. Bobstay Piece
    5. Lacing Piece
    6. Gripe
    7. section of the Keel, not actually part of the Knee

Not a bad job for your first attempt at scroll sawing, you'll get a lot better with more practice (I'm STILL learning ). A tip when making a complex part like this - cut, sand and fit ONE part at a time before cutting the next. This way you can use the already made parts as a template to mark the next pieces at the joins between them.

Your deck nailing has come up really well - not overdone, but still visible .

So finally my scroll saw came on Friday!  I was excited to try it out, so I used it to make the piecses of the cutwater. I think thats what its called. After watching a few YouTube videos, went went off to work!

I think I will remake 1 or 2 pieces,  but overall I think it went pretty well! I used the book plans for this and it actually fits much better on the hull than the prefab kit part did. I also got  a dremal and the drill press attachment thing and used it as a sander to help dand the curves of the pieces.

While I was waiting for the saw, I also put some nails into the middle deck planks to try it out.

I now need to finish the cutwater and cut out the parts of the frames I removed ealier.

    Thanks!

    Jeff
