    Hi Martyn.
Shame on you for painting such excellent planking..
Yes I agree the scarf joint looks 100% better than a butt joint.
    Well done U.

Yes it is actually....but not of the Pegasus or Swan class.   I will be doing one of the Winnie.  I think that will be a nice compliment to the POB full hull.  I have also since made some improvements in the framing process that will make it even easier to build.   I will begin making it as soon as the Winnie full hull is completed.

    Hi.
Another update.  Lots of work done this time.
The hedgehog. There is nothing more to be said about that picture.

Treenails in but not cleaned up at this stage.

Again treenails are in but not sanded at this stage.

Started on the beak. And timbers onto the side of the ship.

Gunports laid on top of the planking. With cling film to stop excess glue getting onto the ship. The get the correct curvature doing it this way. And they are way oversized at the moment.

Started on the upper transom (Not shown the pictures as it is drying at this time.)

All going well and will start constructing the rest of the decks next week.
Thanks for the likes. And comments.

    Hi.
    The photos as promised..
The planking is glued and as yet no work has been done to finish it off.
I will just sand and clear seal it after completing the tree nailing. (With 4 coats of clear Danish Oil)

The Stern area with lots of stealers 1 length had 4 stealers in it ..

    Another shot looking forward/

    The Bow area.

The internal works to date. Stern to Bow.

    Another shot Bow to Stern.

A closeup of the stern area.

A Shot of the lower stern area (Transom)

As you can see I use miniature self tapping screws to hold the planks in place then they are removed ready for tree nailing. The screws are quite long as it helps to hold them in place while fitting them.
The holes are predrilled and so far I have has NO splits in the planking. Its NOT the screw head that holds the planking in place.. Its the thread.
Lots on Ebay listed as Micro self tapping screws. from 1mm upwards.

Will show more progress as the planking continues upwards.

    Hi.
Sorry for the delay in posting... Lots of work done on the model and Starting to decorate the lounge.
Internal planking completed now and model released from jig for first time.

Gunports need trimming down and I shall leave like this until lower deck is in place. Then reinforce the deck beams by adding filler between the beams and the ribs.
View of the completed planking. Lines drawn on for treenails.

Square holes are for deck beams.

Deck beams now in place but not glued yet.

Notches for carlings are machined in. Will be using 4mm sq dark walnut for these.

Jig to hold deck beams at correct height and distance made and fitted to support.

Carlings and ledgers all cut but not glued yet.

Deck  construction well under way. Deck is Alaskan cedar. First time I have used this wood. Very impressed with the quality and grain.

Last planks on this deck are fixed and will need treenailing and sanding.

    First deck

    I like this shot...

A bit of tidying up and I will be happy.

Will start treenailing tomorrow and post a update more often.

    Hi.
    Time for the updates.

A few planks laid. Not much to see but the fairing of the interior of the hull is good.

Yes the small gap is intentional.

One of the reasons I have not been working on the Mayflower very much is the new Shed/Man cave...  Well its finished.
Its a 8ft X 12ft Pent shed that has been Pressure treated then 4 coats of a good preserver. Insulation has 60mm Celotex then covered with 12mm red wood cladding.
Electrics is the only thing I have had done for me. LED lighting is very nice and bright. without costing a small fortune to run them.

    Hello Nils.
Egyptian cotton 400 mesh. The spars are bamboo skewers with half cut away. And one applied each side of the sails.
And no crew for this ship.  All on holiday in USA.
Most of the ship is out of my head.. with what I think it should look like.

AntonyUK got a reaction from Nikiforos in Korean Turtle Ship by AntonyUK - FINISHED - Scale 1/32
    Hi.
Its time for a new project.. Been looking at this for sometime now.
I have made several trips to Korea and visited the war Museum in Seoul.
This was my first encounter of this ship.
There is a kit of this ship made by www.youngmodeler.com at 1/64 scale
There are also a few on E-Bay by the same manufacture.
There are no drawing of this ship and there are a lot of replicas made but most of them are very different. Very confusing.
There are a few referrals to the Turtle ship here on MSW.  including a Kit build by Wim500.
Also lots of nice photos by Grimber.

I intend to Build this @ 1/32 scale so the model will be big enough to include a bit of detail.
    Rule 1...  No paint..
Rule 2..  Follow as much as possible the method of ship building as used in Korea. Lots of HELP wanted here.
The main timber I will be using will be English Cherry as I have a vast stock of it.
Other timber will be used to give contrast and looks.
Most of the Timber is very thick on this ship.
And the hull planking is pined downwards into the plank below.(very long tree nails) Will post a link to the information later.
I am at the stage of just starting the build planning. and laying the hull base (No keel on this ship).
Will be Building this in the Shed as its the only space big enough for the model and me.

    That's it for now.
    Thanks for looking in.

    Regards Antony.

    Hi.
    The model is now complete.
    Now for my kit review.
At first glance to kit looked to be real good. but as I started to build the quality of the plywood became clear that the plywood quality is not that good and I found a few areas that were missing the centre layers of ply.
The instructions were very poor. Almost generic and not to this model at all. Beginners would struggle without good instructions.
Plans were good and a lot of information is there and needs to be self interpreted.
The Keel and frames were a good fit and was very easy to do.
The Planking on the other hand was not so easy if you do not want to paint the kit.(My choice) Easy just to plank and fill and then paint.
Sail cloth ....Did not use. I used Egyptian cotton 400mesh.
The fittings were OK but not to the plan.  Rope was like string . This was binned and replaced with my own.
Worth the cash... Only just YES.

The photos below are the finished kit.

Well that's it for this one... Gonna finish the Korean Turtle ship next. then ??

    Hi.
Almost done now with a little rigging and then tidying up.
Base is now complete. with silicon as water with poster paints mixed and spread around with a finger.
Will not be adding any crew as I cannot make figures and cant find any that matches the model.
Sails were stitched by a friend of my wife.. And I must say she made a excellent job of them for me.
Will post a few more pictures when she is finished.
    Regards Antony.

    Hi.
Its been a while since my last post here... Sorry. Life gets in the way sometimes.
Progress has been slow but I've done a little bit here and there. and its time to post a few pictures.
The hull with first layer of planking done ...Not yet sanded.

Not that easy to plank as the shape of the hull and at this point I decided to plank the second layer with smaller width wood. Just makes it easer to bend and get into the correct shape.

The Hull second layer completed. Note that I have NOT planked down to the keel as this will be cut off as it will be mounted in a seascape. (Waves and surface texture)

Have yet to finish the outside of the hull.

The Deck planking underway using wood supplied with kit.

Will finish the deck planking then tidy up the hull and deck next.
Will not be painting this model as normal.

    Thanks for looking in.
    Regards Antony.

    Hi.
    A little update.
Its been a while since my last post here.
With lots of Good reasons.. First i'me a granddad now  A baby boy called Maverick. Mum and maverick are very well .
Lots of time spent in that direction at the moment..
Have done bits like a plank a side a day.  Its slow but it getting there.
    This is the easy bit..

Much more done here. if I was single planking this model I could not do it without spilling the planks.

The little small black clamps are something I knocked up to hold the planking in place.

Close up of the clamps in action.

They are made from Acetal/Delrin that I have in my workshop. they work very well without slipping. The pin that holds the plank can be made off anything.
I used a 3mm bolt with a piece of nylon tube to protect the Planks. The little square of plywood in the bulkhead thickness.

Will make a drawing if wanted.
    Thanks for looking in.

    Regards Antony (Gramps)

    Hi.
The frames are now faired and checked with planks for correct angles.
The rebate has been cut into the keel. There is no mention of doing this on any of the plans or drawings.. This will be trimmed when adding planks.
The garboard strake is in place on one side at the moment and the other is cut but not yet in place.

fairing done on both sides with planks fitting well.

Rebate cut and will need adjusting as I fit the garboard strake.

    The stern area.

Found the plywood to be very soft and care was needed when fairing the frames.

I will be removing the 2 layers each side from the keel and fitting a cap as in the photo above. This is just a test to see if it works.
The rebate is 2 layers deep so the removal will be easy.

garboard strake in place. Strange shape But it fits well.

    Garboard in place.. close up.
The assembly up to now has been easy. With the use of clothes pegs to hold the parts while the glue sets.
Will post as the planking continues.

    Regards Antony.

    Hi.
    Started on the construction today.
Started by cutting the Parts from the Laser cut sheets. Found that the veneer on the sheets was not quite bonded as it should be.. But not a issue. Easy glued.

The Tabs for holding the parts to the sheet could be better placed and not were the bulkhead meets the keel.

The Keel I will need to cover the Edges with Veneer as I will not be painting this boat.

The dry fitting in process. Slight gaps in the bulkheads as the bulkhead sheet might be thinner than standard..

The Gap is 1mm .. But the Keel if of the correct thickness and bulkheads slot needed sanding to fit.

This part really  stiffens the structure and if of a very good fit.

Just another angle of the stiffener.

    Slight warp to the keel.

Will make a stand that will hold the keel straight and provide support while building.

Added the Deck supports. Found that the 10A if to high. Will check this later on when I can put a few planks across the deck and check its height again.

Part 11a can be glued into place .. why did they cut it out to start with ?? Also Part 17 according to the drawings below show that the top is level with the notch in the keel.

Here it also shows that part 17 is level with the notch in the keel.

Again  it also shows that part 17 is level with the notch in the keel.

    No way is this correct.

    Much to high.

This is the position I will use to fit part 17.

    Another angle.

After cutting 1mm from the bottom of part 10a the planks lie on a natural curve and look good.

Next step will Glue the bulkheads to the keel and add the stiffener at the same time.
Will post more as I progress with the build.

    Regards Antony.

    I.
Having opened the kit I am very pleased with my choice and the contents of the box.

The instructions are in many languages and are easy to read. English is enclosed in a Grey box. As below.

The Barrels are OK BUT  I will make my own.  Blocks look Ok as do all the other bits.

Will take more photos when I've opened the packets.

Two sheets of drawings and assembles. One being Double sided.

Nice to have the Parts drawn full size.

The plywood is Pear faced and the laser work is Excellent. The first sheet is very thin with no cracks But with some laser burning.

    Again faced Plywood..

A close up of the laser cutting... Very clean.

The wood is of good quality and I will be using this..

Also this wood is of very good quality.

A real close up of the planking strips.

    Odd bits of timber.

Sail cloth. Needless to say I will replace this.

    Dowel.

Found a few interesting links on the style of boat.
    http://www.leudoleonidas.com/leonidas_EN/lastoria/la_storia.htm
Have checked the kit contents against the Parts list in the back on the instruction booklet. All there plus a few planking strips extra.
Will start on construction very soon.

    Thanks for looking in.

    Hi.
This will be my next build.
I purchased the kit from https://www.rocrimodellismo.com/en/static-display-wooden-model-kits/1151-santa-lucia-sicilian-cargo-boat-wooden-assembly-kits-model-boats-and-sailing-vessel-mantua-model-panart-sergal.html
The reasons for this kit are the pleasing lines and simple construction.

Found some good information on the ship.
https://www.shipmodeling.ru/books/leudo  Language selection is in the top right corner.
Will post some pictures of the kit's contents tomorrow.
At first glance the quality looks very good.

    Hi James.
That was a very good review of a kit. Lots of nice photos showing what you are talking about.
Yes it's the little things that make a difference to a kit.. Like the elastic bands being too tight can distort towels and strips of timber.
This is the standard of kit that a few other producers need to produce.
This is the sort of kit we are seeing coming from Dusek Ship kits.

    Hi Jim.
Yes they are the locknut and set screws you will need to adjust.
Start with the slide in the centre.
Then tighten the middle screw and nip the locking nut. BUT NOT TO TIGHT.
Test the full travel of the bed. And redo if nessary.
Then tighten the outer two screws and nip the lock nuts.
Retest the travel on the bed..
As I said this can be time consuming but it's worth the effort as this mill is brill for modeling work and mine has served me well.

    Hi.
Quite a different story for me..
I started at the age of 6 or 8. Never had any money or kits around at that time.
Only plastic kits of aircraft were the rage with kids.
A local fisherman who made models from wood he found washed up on the beach was his local supplier.
This guy had a wicked eye for ships lines and shapes. He would carve the models from the drift wood that had been drying over several years with very little tools and drawings.
Nothing is a failure in his eyes as it is art in his style.

The first thing I made out of wood was a raft. Very basic with bamboo canes as the timber.
The next one was a rowing boat made from a plug that my tutor had made a few years earlier.
This one was made using candle wax to release the glue. Two straps of planks a day...
After that I started making my own designs. What was pleasing to my eyes was the shape and style.

I take breaks from my ship modeling... last time I did any was some 5 months ago. Now summer is over will finish my Korean ship.

Many people fail to compleate there model due to very poor instructions. And to poor quality of the kit contents.
There are some excellent posts and help on beginners choice of kit here on this forum.

What I am trying to say is.. Don't care what other people think of your ship or boat. We all have got to learn to use our hands and head together.
For begginers... post it and you Will get the help.
    Don't compare your work with other people's. ... It's your ship/boat.
Ask before you proceed if you don't understand what the instruction are trying to say.

Enough of my ranting and trying to put the world to right.

    Regards Antony.
