Trussben reacted to westwood in HMS Portland 1770 by westwood - Portland Scale Ship Co. - 1:48 - 50 gun 4th rate
Hey guys
My weekend was all about building
deadwood and the aft cant frames.
There was lots of sanding, testing, sanding, testing...
I just hope everything will be okay after the final fairing.
And I hope the wing transoms finally fall into place properly, too.
But that will happen after I've framed the starboard side.

Today’s progress, moving at a glacial pace but I have some of the lower planking belt in place. I need to install the counter tomorrow and fair down the filler pieces on the side to define stern before I can progress any further with planking.
Once the planking fully blocked down and is sealed with WOP I can then proceed with painting the gunports and the edges of the planking as I did on the POB version.

Starboard side framing completed, now onto the port side.
Obviously it looks awful at this stage as it needs “a **** ton” of sanding and fairing but we will get to that soon enough.

Here are the first few Starboard side frames installed, we will begin to get a proper feel for what the model is going to look like now.
The designer has left lots of “meat on the bones” for later fairing of the hull when framing is complete.

Starboard side gunport framing completed, now to start cleaning the char from the Frame pieces and begin installing them. I intend to frame this side and when done turn her around and frame all the port side.

Here are the final jig parts for the moment, these two mdf pieces mount on top of the aft jig assembly and give support to the tallest bulkhead extensions at the level of the Quarterdeck, they also hold the parts for the gunports.

It’s an ink stabilizer and UV protector that helps stop fading. spray on until wet and then allow to dry, I use the Krylon brand stuff.
The dullcoat is a varnish lacquer that will do the final seal and give a tougher finish.

I have had good luck with the printed Friezes by doing this as well, but I first spray them after they come off the printer with a matt fixative, when they have been glued on the model I then give them a couple of coats of Testors Dullcoat.
