  1. Hi Bryan. I am somewhat ahead of you on the same build. Am about to start work on the masts and yards. Have done a fair bit of bashing of the kit though. My only comment at this stage is that the supplied timber for the second layer of planking is quite brittlle, rough and splintery, particularly on the edges. You will probably need to go through the whole lot and disregard some of them. Luckily Caldercraft provides more than enough to complete the job. I also found a very good example of this ship in the online exhibit from the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. It is worth a look if you are considering any bashing. Use the Museum search facility - enter HM Armed Brig Supply - 24 hi res pics. :)

brilliant link, I am going to give this kit a go for my next adventure and the detailed photos will be a superb asset.

  2. Please excuse me if I have named things wrong here, however I am trying to learn the various areas of a sailing ship but it isn't coming on fast. I am at the point of attaching my mid sail, there are Two attachments that run top and bottom of the sail which then run horizontal to the mast, I think they are called Gaffs? at the end of these I have to attach black beads, I think they are called parrels? can anyone give me any idea the best way to tie these beads on, was there any specific knot that was used in days gone by so to speak as I am trying to teach myself the correct ways.

    Many thanks for any help

  3. Car spray paints are wonderful, a white primer followed by a few easy coats of white finish will give you a great finish. if you can brush finish then you can again get a first class finish by building the paint up gently between the coats, on one coat brush lengthways, the next coat brush widthways, then lengthways then widthways, rolls Royce cars which were hand painted for many years were painted by coach painting techniques which were and still are as good as any spray job. Trouble with acrylics is they dry too fast when painted with a brush and they drag, you can use house paint as well, just give a nice gentle scuff over between coats. To get rid of dust you can get a thing called a tack rag which when wiped gently over the paint will lift any dusty bits.

  4. As a former paint sprayer I did on many occasions make up and mix my own paints, we all see colour in different ways and although I appreciate many companies offer what they say are original colours based on records changes in law meant that many paints now have to be user friendly, so no more leads, coppers etc. I tend to use acrylics for quick jobs as it dries fast and enamels where a quality finish on things like metal is needed with a longer brushing time. You can of course use spray paints which are used on cars etc for wonderful finishes.

Get some base paints like white, red, green, black and so on and attempt to mix your own for as little or as much as you need, I myself use model paints like humbrol, it can be a pain at time so the way is to go very slow and mix well before adding anymore as colour can sit deep and take a while to fully mix. With white, red, black, green, yellow and blue you can mix a wealth of various shades and colours. Always good to prime before painting as well as it allows a bond between the surface and the finished paint work but also allows you to see problems prior to placing the finish. You can use household paints as well, just do gentle coats rather than trying to do the whole task in one go. Hope that may help a little. By the way, ink can be a good finish, especially when over coated with a nice Matt varnish to remove any shine.

  5. Just starting the rigging on my first boat, the planking daunted me but I realised I actually enjoyed it more than I thought. I started following the principle of allowing the wood to find its natural lay and then filling in any gaps with shaped cuts of wood, seemed to work ok although it could be a lot better. It's all a learning kerb and hopefully as time goes on things will be easier to handle. Looking forwards to watching the build.

  6. Superb use of modern technologies.... Just one for you, there are some brilliant strip led units that can now be purchased for marine fish tanks, I use them myself to bring the correct light spectrums for my corals. They also do led strips that create lightning strikes which would work brilliantly when making guns look like they are firing. I use to add interiors to my model aircraft where you would get a real cabin look when looking through the windows, great model set up for sure.

  7. Just read through this whole build and what a stunning piece of work you have created, infact I have now given up wanting to do the Pickle, this model is going to be my next step on the ladder. There is something pretty special showing a ship with no sails, I think they look tons better in the rigging scenario only. Great job my friend and thanks indeed for posting something so interesting it was impossible not to just keep reading.

  8. Hi sjors, my name is Terry, just used the Telp one as it is easier to remember. I have opened a build thread which I will now start to work with on Sunday, need to do a few photos as the longboat is three quarters finished, I just tried to do as much as possible to test my limits, I am going to give the pickle a go for my next build and I will start a build log proper for that one. I think the beauty of this hobby is seeing how people get through difficult phases, best wishes.

  9. Woh... having just joined the forums I thought I would take a look at what is achievable with patience and a keen eye for perfection, this is just amazing, I am starting out on a few small boats to try and learn as much as I can as I saw this model a few months ago and told myself I would do something like this one day. That day may be a few years away yet, but what a fantastic looking ship you are creating. I do not think I have ever spent Two hours reading a thread from start to finish before, really looking forwards to seeing how this lady looks once finished. Thanks for the posting, really has given me some inspiration as to what to aim for one day.

  10. Hi all

I am new to the site and hopefully as soon as I get some pictures up I can show where I have got to with this my first build. I have now reached the rigging stage and like many a newbie I am daunted to say the least. I have already sited the main mast and the bow mast before I read that it is best not to do so prior to doing some work on them. I am now in the throws of putting together tackle blocks however my issue now is that from what I can see I need to put the sails on the masts which then makes it very difficult to site the blocks. My question is as such, can I just rig the boat first and then try and put the sails in place or is there a trick or two I can learn?

I am doing loads of reading as I want to prepare a lot of the items as close to how they should be made as possible, I am taking things pretty slow and will attempt a few newbie builds which will give me the principles to try something bigger in the future. If anyone has built this model I would be grateful for any decent pictures as the rigging instructions with this kit are near on hopeless to someone who has no real idea. Thank for any help and I will get some pics up tomorrow hopefully before I go and see the Who live in London on Saturday.
